RPG Maker MV Tutorial #2 - Creating an NPC!

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 พ.ค. 2016
  • Today we learn about how to create an event, turn it into an NPC, and make it talk! You can even tell her whether you like hamburgers or hat dogs. Don't ask me why it's like that, it was just a spur of the moment!
To be honest, didn't expect the beginner's tutorial to be so successful immediately due to the fact this channel has been mainly focusing on advanced stuff, but I considering how it currently has more likes than the release video for UTB Beta, I guess things'll turn out OK. :p
If you're an RPG Maker noob and want more videos detailing how to use this program, then give this video a thumbs up, a like, and a subscribe! :D

I love how he wasn’t troubled with spelling “dialogue” but was concerned with his spelling of “hamburger.”

    Erase Event
Use this for recurring things. I personally use it for enemies on the map, so they become "erased" after they're defeated, but don't reappear until the player reenters the map or loads the game again.
Also useful for Autorun events that do simple things. A good example is if you want sunlight on your map. You can use an Autorun event that uses "Show Picture" to overlay a sunlight image. However, all things stop until the Autorun event is finished, so you can use Erase Event to stop it. Whenever the player reenters the area, the sunlight image will be shown again since the event isn't permanently erased.
    Self-Switch
The most commonly used one. Use this for "scene" events, such as ones which start upon entering an area. Creating a new, blank event page will stop this scene from ever reappearing. Self-Switches can also be used for dialogue, quests, and pretty much anything that changes over time.
    Switch
Another option. Switches can affect multiple events, unlike Self-Switches which only affect themselves. Say you enter a town, a scene occurs which burns down the village, then the player regains control. You can use a single switch to change all of the dialogue in the village, as well as permanently disabling the scene event.
Furthermore, you can use switches to enable the player to continue the story or enter a previously unavailable area. A single switch can completely change the landscape of an area, and multiple ones will shape the narrative/gameplay of your game.
    Variable
Similar to Switch, but with infinitely more control. Events can be dependent on Variables, just like Switches or Self-Switches. The difference is that you can perform a huge amount of operations on Variables. Say the village elder won't talk to you until you've collected 10 apples. You can have a Variable operate "+1" every time you collect an apple. If that Variable equals 5, the elder can say something like "You're halfway there," then you can have a scene start when the Variable equals 10.
Once you become more accustomed to the engine, you'll realize that Variables are some of the most valuable and versatile things that the engine has to offer. For now, you can use them for basic things which require addition or multiplication. You can even integrate them into RNG mechanics for your game.
    Transparency
You can temporarily disable the Player's appearance by turning Transparency on. You can also alter an event's Transparency by using the "Move Route" Transparency command, but this is nearly the same as Erase Event. The difference is that you can erase an event using the Transparency command of a different event, unlike Self-Switches and Erase Event which only operate on themselves. Just like Erase Event (and all Move Route options), Transparency resets upon reentering or reloading; except for the Player. They will remain transparent until the option is disabled via event.
    Conditional Branch
I figured I'd mention this as well. Conditional Branch can be used alongside Switches and Variables to determine how an event should proceed. This doesn't really involve your question, but it's a way to change when an event disappears. You can also use it for small dialogue changes instead of wasting an entire event page. For example: If [Apples] is greater than or equal to 5, elder says "You're halfway there, keep at it!" otherwise he says "Hurry up!" You can use a conditional branch for this instead of creating a completely new event page. You can also turn on Self-Switches inside conditional branches, so I suppose it is another, less space-consuming way to erase events under certain conditions.
I didn't write this, it's off reddit, I just come here once in a blue moon and it's nice to have the info ready for me hehe.

Add a new page to the npc event. Tick off the variable box and make a new variable like, "NPC yammer". At the bottom of the first page of the event, change variable +1 to said variable. Next time you talk to the npc, it should display the 2nd page's dialogue instead of the first.

From what I see, RPG Maker is pretty much a program/interface that writes and checks that code for you in whatever language it's made! . . No need for Classes . . or loops and switches . . and . . So I'm not sure if you have a video for this or not. But I created a "World map" however I don't want to use it like typical "World maps" (Think original final fantasies) I want to use it as like an actual map that the character can use to see where they are within the world, as far as the world goes I want to actually create it and make it function similar to the original Zelda. (A bunch of small to medium phases that interconnect creating a larger world) I'm fairly certain this will take a LOT of effort (Or maybe not) I was just wondering if you knew how to make a tile map you've made and turn it into a part of game as an actual map you can access to see location.

    • @haydengames3v2
      @haydengames3v2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

You could save the map into a image file, then put it in the pictures folder of your game, set up a event that leads to "show picture" then you'll have the whole map shown on the screen.

I never noticed that faded line in the dialogue box holy shit I have my answer for why some of my stuff got cut off when i was trying the trial.
Although I have to wonder why the dialogue input box isn't the same size as the game dialogue area which would negate the need for a line....It's not like people want their long text to get cut off.
