I just hope that they announce SOMEthing, ANYthing that actually interests me enough to purchase using my massive store credit balance before they go belly-up. I already asked CS if they could just refund my SC balance and they said no, so my money is just… stuck there, with a company that hasn’t released or announced a single title that interests me in like 6 months, and also seems on the edge of bankruptcy. Great. 😬
When i was a kid i used to buy a music magazine that was issued monthly. Each month i was expecting it's new issue. It was long time ago, internetless, no social nets, etc. For me your videos, eventhough are more frecuently "issued", reminds me of that expectation and enjoy each one. By the way, really enjoyed your "travel videos". Thank you.
Bailed last year. They're like a bad relationship: when you've committed to the long term, you get shafted on all the wine & dine bonuses and discounts. If you leave, they throw themselves at you with free records (yay, a color variant of that 'elusive' lil peep record that was pressed last year), implicitly promising they will be good to you if you just give them one more chance. Please....
I was a member of VMP but canceled my subscription over 6 months ago. I agree they put out quality records. I finally canceled due to their record selection which was less to my taste as time went on. I still have credit at VMP. This morning I tried to order an album with that credit but was amazed about their new shipping charges. They wanted to charge more for shipping than the value of the record. This wasn't the case many months ago. I'm not very happy about that as you can imagine. .
I give VMP until next year before they totally tank. They just jacked up their domestic prices. For a monthly subscription now, they went from $46 for a single record to $54. If one springs for the 12 month subscription the price is $44 which is still insane. The thing I have always hated about the club is you got to buy into the Essentials line before you get into the other lines. Moreover, they just killed their fledgling Rock line and their Country line. I can't see anyone in their right mind paying $44 to $54 for a single record when an AP or Mofi single record is cheaper. Their hipster demographic they're targeting just isn't going to be able to pay for it. Glad you love the 'credit' records ;)
Like you, VMP ain't for me though I respect the quality work they are doing. The Zamrock box I would still love to have cause it has at least 1 record they've yet to issue separately. And it's a beauty too
Nice curation of records from VMP, especially as a non-member. I agree, that VMP has been a sh!t show. I did a video about the scandal a while back, and it just keeps getting more complicated. VMP membership can be extremely confusing. I am a member and I have subscribed to all but their Country tracks, and I don’t swap. Whatever they send, I keep-which makes it simpler, but you sometimes get albums that fall outside your taste and you’ll never want to listen to again. The price hikes make it hard to continue to justify. Prices are creeping up into audiophile territory, which will be hard to digest if records continue to be pressed at GZ. I’m hopeful that positive change is on the way. The new leadership appears to be making a lot of changes. I hope they succeed and continue to produce records well into the future. Not because I’m a loyalist, but because losing any meaningful company in the vinyl game is just bad for all of us. 🤞
I've been a member of VMP since late 2018 and have really enjoyed it over the years. I do find in the past year or two though now that my collection is much more filled out that I just don't have a need for a lot of the records they put out but I'm glad its there. This latest debacle is disappointing being an international member but I might just use my US forwarding address if I really want to remain a member. How they handled it was terrible though, no warning, take payment and then tell you boom, you can't preorder and will have to pay shipping, taxes, etc. I find increasingly VMP is catering to variant collectors and am I tired and done with collecting variant color vinyl, give me black all day long and while VMP puts out some great reissues there are a number where the original sounds better and also with more high end reissue campaigns like Rhino HiFi, AP and even the Interscope Vinyl Collective there are far more options now than there was in 2018 or 2020.
Never ending stories from Mazzy on the concept of box sets 😂. With a lucky end this time, see the Greatful Dead box set. I ordered the Blue Note & Fela Kuti box sets to Germany. So let‘s see AND wait (and pay the crazy custom & shipping fee). I also never liked the subscription model. It is too complicated and also the titles in general could be more interesting considering the pricing. I ordered around 25 records the last 5 years. Quality of vinyl and packaging was always great incl. nice booklets you start reading eventually after 5 years.
Member for two years and the curation introduced me to albums I wouldn't probably have found otherwise. And a couple of box sets. Great quality. It looks More complicated from the outside, but even I was able to figure it out. They fired me as a Canadian but I sneak in as a US member for half the year... if they survive
Great overview of a company that has so many genres of music in their catalog. I own a few including Moby, the Stooges and Fanny. I’m current waiting on the repress of Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality that was due in august and I think was scheduled for that new record plant.
I've had a 3 month subscription to VMP twice, both times with Country as my chosen "track". The first time I bough a whole slew of albums, including titles from Marty Stuart (Busy Bee Cafe), Tammy Wynette, Waylon Jennings, Gram Parsons, and Iris DeMent (her debut album Infamous Angel, given an A- grade by Rock music critic Robert Christgau). The second time was this past January/February/March. At the end of last year VMP announced the Album Of The Month titles for those upcoming months, all of which I knew I wanted: Old Five And Dimers Like Me by Billy Joe Shaver, Old. No. 1 by Guy Clark, and The Houston Kid by Rodney Crowell. The Houston Kid was released on CD only in 2001, and is in my Top 10 albums of all time list. I had been dying for an LP release of the album for over twenty years! But VMP recently announced the elimination of two "Tracks", one of them being Country. That, along with the price increase, is the end of my interest in VMP. By the way, Yep Roc Records just announced the upcoming LP release of Iris DeMent's second album, My Life, which Christgau awarded a grade of A+! Another Top 10 album of mine.
I got the Hancock box set from them. It’s so well-crafted. Just a great set. But I’m not a member - I already have too many of the records that they would send. And in the age of Amazon, shipping costs just seem to be an add-on charge that’s unacceptable.
i looked into VMP it just looked like too much of a hassle. i belonged to the RECODR CLUB OF CANADA . which was great i was 13 so in 73 it was 5 lps for 5 bucks ,no commitment a monthly catalogue, i started my collection through it. " spending all of my snow shoveling and grass cutting money" cheers!
I did a video 4 years ago, about my year in VMP. Back then it was $200 for the year, well worth it then. Next year they doubled the price to $400 and I was done.
VM-what? The biggest problem with all those Groupons is that they have nothing that interests me. Just looked during video at VMP website, and there was not one record I wanted. Not even tempted to get with free credit. Same with Mofi, AP, even RSD (I think I bought one ever: Skeletal Family early works). I prefer supporting living active artists through bandcamp. Just this Friday bought a good dozen or so releases, mostly vinyl, some digital only: Mission to the Sun, L'Avenir, Julia Bondar, Pinhdar, iamnoone, Xeno&Oaklander, Soft Scent, Closed Mouth, Movie Camera, They Die, Public Memory, Abu Nein, Night Nail, Rue Oberkampf, Haunt Me. I am a xxx-wave and associated genres guy.
I really would like the Dead box set but the cost is just over my budget. (So many records i would love to get but cannot). I do love the quality of the VMP issues, but i am not a subscription kinda guy and the cost is high. I do occasionally buy one of their records if it is high on my want list.
I think the only record I’ve ever bought from VMP is a 2 LP 45 RPM version of Panda Bear’s “Person Pitch.” I don’t remember paying way over their base price for it, but that was 3-4 years ago.
My 6 month subscription ended August 31. I had store credit which I used for this months subscription. And I got an email telling me they are not shipping internationally any more from end September.. I have that Tidal album by Fiona Apple great record
The record plant, Paramount, appears to be open. I received a couple Gillian Welch represses that were pressed there. I think David Rawlings, her partner, is an owner but don’t quote me on that
Interesting piece on VMP, Mazzy. I did partake of their "Vinyl Me Parton" series with Dolly, and they were all fantastic, but I would have picked two or three other albums than the ones Dolly ended up doing with them. Other than that, I agree, it's too pricey, too confusing, and I'd much rather order it directly or pick it up when I find it in a store.
Never did a subscription. I have ordered one or two over the price to do one and dones. My brother DID have a subscription and when the Sabbath Masters sold out...I got a repress on Preorder . Now I'm wondering if I'll ever see it before they close shop. I hope they stick around but their pricing is INSANE compared to the bulk of their output.
yeah it’s a huge blow for sure. to get incentivized to purchase a yearly membership was enticing for me, now they raise it $100 a year and it’s not like we’re getting anything additional for the price hike, we’re just paying for their numerous mistakes which isn’t fair.
I wanted the Teo Macero Prestige LP, but they sold out. However, many of the VMP exclusive records are later re-pressed by other companies so I might get it after all.
I think I have a Vinyl Me Please Stooges album. I’m not sure if I have any others. The Zamrock boxset is nice. I have all the electric Miles albums do I don’t need the box. Can you number the Grateful Dead with a sharpie.
I've been tempted by the Dead box but I have all the originals already and am not crazy about the color vinyl. How do the reissues from the box hold up against originals? are they better?
I am an international member. I have a monthly sub. I am hanging on for some back orders but the ‘rock’ category disappeared and ‘essentials’ are really not. I would have ended my subscription but VMP have made that decision for me. Over the years I have obtained some excellent pressings but the company has really gone down hill recently.
I joined vmp . Some great records but the ability to swap is nonsense. Records not available they say but are still for sale . So I gave up my membership
I was a member for two years as an international member with a lot of store credit....Two weeks ago I requested to use some of my store credit as memberhip credit which (after a week) was approved. The lady I spoke to said she has added store credit to membership credit and that all I needed to do was 'resubscribe'. Easy right? nope. when I went to 'reactive' lo and behold NO option to do so whether I'm signed in or not. HOPELESS. no resolution given either.
I just hope that they announce SOMEthing, ANYthing that actually interests me enough to purchase using my massive store credit balance before they go belly-up. There seems to be a good concept somewhere there but it’s just too complicated 😎🥺😵💫
