Alfred Nobel's brother died. A journalist mistakenly saw the notice and though it was Alfred, so he wrote this obituary about Alfred, calling him 'the merchant of death'. That really changed Alfred's perspective and was the catalyst for him instating the prices and setting aside the money for it.
Also the system with names of plants and animals in latin and sorted in a specific way is a system invented by the swede Carl von Linne’ in the 1700’s.
Some quick comments FYI. Alred Nobel saw the perils with dynamite (originally a brand hense Dynanite). So as to encourage peace efforts he established the Nobel Peace Prize a few years after the other awards. The solemn awarding ceremony takes place in Oslo, not Stockholm, as Sweden and Norway constituted a union at the time (which was dissolved 1905). The first peace prize was awarded Henri Durant (founder of the Red Cross), and Frédéric Passy who advocated for international negations as an alternative to war. When it comes to computer games Candy Crush, Battlefield and Minecraft comes to mind.
• Adjustable Wrench - Johan Petter Johansson invented the adjustable wrench in 1891. • Safety Match - Gustaf Erik Pasch invented the safety match in 1844. • Tetra Pak - Ruben Rausing and Erik Wallenberg developed this innovative packaging solution in the 1950s. • Ball Bearing - Invented by Sven Wingquist in 1907. • Propeller - John Ericsson invented the screw propeller in 1836. • AGA Lighthouse - Nils Gustaf Dalén invented the AGA lighthouse system, which used acetylene gas for illumination. • Sun Valve - Another invention by Dalén, the sun valve automatically turned the lighthouse light on at dusk and off at dawn, conserving fuel and reducing the need for manual operation. • Gas absorption refrigerator, which was invented by Carl Munters and Baltzar von Platen in the early 1920. • Foam plastic insulation developed by Carl Munters. This invention improved the efficiency of refrigerators by providing better insulation, which helps to maintain the desired temperature inside the refrigerator.
The point with inventing dynamite isn't the explosion in itself, it is that it is safe, it doesn't explode when you don't want it to. They had explosives before the dynamite, but there were a lot of accidents when things exploded when they were not supposed to.
I'm Swedish and it took me about 0.01 seconds to hear that you're Scottish. Fun fact about IKEA: In Sweden, duvet covers have holes at the top corners, so you can grab the cover and shake it into place. But IKEA customers abroad returned them, thinking they were damaged, so then IKEA chose not to make them with the holes.

When need it also heller with creating tunnels, so we could travel flattly though instead of over or around…
The safety belt WAS patented by Volvo, but they opened it up for free. In this way nobody else could have a patent on this invention but all car manufactures could use it.
Allemansrätten - Right to roam often can go for private land as well. As long as you don´t camp on farmland or such or to close to their private home and maybe make yourself known to the owner and most important, leave it as you found it.
When you put allemansrätten to the test you discover that it has limitations. If you live close to urban areas there aren't many places where camping is allowed. Everything is either a nature reserve or tree plantation. Putting up a tent there is illegal even for one night. There are designated areas but these are always crowded in the summer.

There is a lot of games that comes from Sweden or gaming developers that is/was Swedish. Minecraft and Battlefield and Candy Crush for example and many many many more!! Sweden is home to a number of large and successful game companies such as King, DICE, Starbreeze and Mojang.
Alfred Nobel also thought that when the armies would se the destructive potential of dynamite, they would not use it. Well, that didnt happen. The destructive force of the atom bomb was needed for it to not be used (except for initial use).
In short and the simplest explanation because it is so much more than what I write here, the reason why the Nobel Prize exists is that many people thought he invented things to make money from it. So Alfred Nobel started the Nobel Prize to prove the opposite. Then we have a modest inventor who is a woman, she invented the walker and she said she didn't care that people did not know she invented it, as long as they made it for people with reduced mobility. She had initially made this for her mother. Many believe that it is a Norwegian invention because they are the biggest brand on the market. But there was a woman in Sweden named Aina Wifalk .Unfortunately, the Allemansrätten is disappearing as many have private beaches and even forests.
2:09 Håkan Lans did not invent the computer mouse. He invented digitizing tables in the early 1980s. A mouse with a crosshair was placed over a tool that then carried out for example cut, fill, make a circle with diameter xx, etc. The computer mouse was invented by the American Douglas Engelbart. Håkan Lans has invented Data processing system and apparatus for color graphics display, Arrangement for producing a pattern on a light-sensitive surface, from Wikipedia: tracking system which makes use of a Self-Organized Time Division Multiple Access (STDMA) datalink. The STDMA datalink is currently in use in the Automatic Identification System (AIS). AIS is a short range coastal tracking system which is mandatory aboard international voyaging ships with gross tonnage (GT) of 300 or more tons, and all passenger ships regardless of size. STDMA is also in use as one of the three physical layer models proposed for Automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B), a cooperative surveillance technique for air traffic control which is in the process of implementation. Lans has his own company, GP&C Systems International AB, which is focused on marketing STDMA.
there are about 20 more but most of them is a reinvention of things that did not fully did the job or where dangerous to use. Safety whas the main goal of everything and for everybody.
Allemansrätten - "all men's right" is an interesting product of Swedish history and law. Long, long ago, some people would own large swaths of land. Then they died, and due to the "right of inheritance" each son of the family would inherit and equal share of the land. One plot of land divided into a number strips equal to however many sons the owner had. As generations passed, these strips were divided more and more until somewhere in the 1800s, many "landowners" owned a ridiculous piece of land of 10 feet wide and 3 miles long. These pieces of land were essentially impossible to capitalize. An animal hunted or tree felled would most likely fall on a neighbouring plot, disturbing or belonging to that landowner. Realizing this problem, Swedish lawmakers initiated a land reform: Your land would be seized by the state and you would be returned an equally valuable but more manageable plot of land. Sounds swell, but now your land might be surrounded by other peoples' private land. So how do you legally get to your land? "Allemansrätten". The lawmakers, along with the land reform, also made it legal to cross, by foot or horse, over private property (that does not contain hazards). And that is why Swedes to this day may enjoy their land in an unprecedented fashion.
Pity that it seems impossible for an American - even if they do live in Sweden - to pronounce IKEA correctly. It is NOT "eye-kee-ah" but "ee-ke-ah". How can that be so difficult?

The big thing about dynamite is that before there was nitro glycerin that is highly instable. What dynamite did was to add safely usage.

In Swedish, zipper is called "flash lock" or "pull chain".
in direct translation of words yes. flash/lightning /zap/zip-Pull/drag locking chain..
It’s a tear lock in German …
Or you could translate it into "Quick lock"
I think that the English "word" for 'allemansrätten' (the right of every man (person)) is "freedom to roam".
The wrench was invented by Johan Petter Johansson in 1891. Quite useful I would say.

The Nobel prices... aren't they responsibility enough for you?
Yes the Nobel ”Peace Prize” is a direct result over Alfred Nobels worries over the war-implication of Dynamite.
