A Day At The Front - a short film set in a WW1 trench (Colour)

  • This short film represents the more personal aspects of life for a British Tommy in the trenches of WW1.
    This was our very first attempt at making a short film back in 1992. We dug and kitted out a small replica WW1 trench in the back garden of my suburban semi in Wirral, much to the delight of my neighbours! Although the footage was shot in 1992 it has only just been digitised and edited (2014)! Unfortunately the tapes had degraded quite a bit so the quality isn't good, but nonetheless it shows what we were trying to achieve.
    My good friend Paul (Richard) Gardiner, who sadly passed away this year, had all the ideas, inspiration and creativity and, of course, played the part of The Tommy. I'm the technical guy who did all the filming and editing, but with a bit of creativity thrown in too :)
    Music:
    "The Lark Ascending" by Vaughan Williams
    "Pack Up Your Troubles" sung by Murray Johnson

    now add 1000 liters of mud, dense fog, loads of other soldiers sitting and dwelling around on closest space possible, the smell of burned and decaying corpses and sporadic shaking ground and raining gravel from artillery shells. now your ww1 adventure is finished.

      +Afro Blasterman Yeah this hardly seems like a WW1 trench at all. Where a soldier gets his own personal little space, a good nights sleep, and is all happy. Soldiers got few hours of sleep because of the constant bombings and the fact that they slept in little cubbies. I also saw no dead bodies on the ground as to protect from the cold water flooding the trenches.

      And Gas, never ending Artillery and constant screams of agony, your friends dying next to you, people asking you to shoot them because they're drowning in mud, horses literally exploding everywhere, dysentery, not being able to leave the trench to go to the bathroom so shit and piss everywhere. All the water is contaminated with gas, blood, dirt, and anything else you can think of but there's no water to drink. getting lost in the dark and falling into an artillery crater full of that festering water and not being able to get out. Just fucking brutal

    Richard was our tour guide on two tours. Both my favourite. He knew the line between being the guide and being a teacher and being a fun guide. The kids loved him. He is missed by us all. But just think of all those souls from WW1 he is now with! That'll keep him busy.

    One of the best of the war shorts I've seen. I love how it's done as a silent movie with the perfect music added. Shows the tedium and deprivation that a soldier goes through. Great job.

    Very interesting short.I "first" discovered ww1 through " Goodbye to all that",then " Guns of August", "Verdun,the price of glory"," Storm of steel" ,Wilfred Owen and now Barbusse"s Under Fire.And the list is likely to go on and on.Am thankful,every day,for having enough to eat and a nice bed to lie on at night.Just imagine going through the horror these soldiers went through.Of course our own "enlightened world can go to smithereens any minute.Still,theres so much to be thankful for.

    Wonderfully shot, wonderfully edited and wonderfully played. It captures the monotony and general “getting on with life” aspect of serving at the front. Even better because it’s silent.

    The first scene when they woke this guy up was probably in a reserve trench back a few hundred yards back from the front trenches.Otherwise he would be asleep with all his equipment on ready for "stand too" for a few hours before he had his tea and breakfast unless an attack from the Germans started just then.Otherwise there were no soldiers running about or Officers and NCOs making sure they were on their feet that morning.

      +LIIV Milk Man That does surprise me as Paul was very knowledgable about these things. Perhaps as this was made 23 years ago it was all he had available at the time? He had an excellent collection of WW1 items worthy of a museum by the time he died last year. Anyway, this film wasn't really about complete accuracy with the props etc, it was just a first attempt to see what we could do and to get across a general impression. I'm glad you still liked the film.

    • @MeoniaMajic
      @MeoniaMajic  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dreem Walker Perhaps you would have preferred a heavy metal soundtrack? Shame that wasn't about in 1914! As to any innacuracies, we didn't do too badly considering we had almost no budget, and it was only an early experimental film made 23 years ago. The reason I posted it on TH-cam was as a tribute to my friend Paul (the actor in the film) who sadly died last year, so respect that if nothing else.

    • @dreem1walker
      @dreem1walker 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MeoniaMajic
      Him I do respect and his sad passing. But it's just silly to think that I would prefer a heavy metal soundtrack. But the trenches weren't that happy or romantic, and if you really would like to be historical correct, that tune is also way out of it's time. One little help about inaccuracies .. no soldier lived alone like that, and no officers lived in the trenches
