John Inman from Are You Being Served said Sid was a delight to work with. Sid and John worked in panto together just after John became a huge star of Are You Being Served? Also, John wanted to make clear that Sid was in no way homophobic, a claim made by Kenneth Williams. John, who was far more camper than Kenneth said Sid did not care what sexuality any man was. One night after a performance, it was published in the papers that the second series of Are You Being Served was a ratings smash hit. Sid came to John's dressing room with a huge magnum of champagne, and toasted John's success in the sitcom, and John remembered the words Sid said "isn't it great?" - meaning isn't it great to be so successful and loved. What a kind man he was, he really liked John Inman, thought him very funny as Mr Humphries.
He seemed so shy talking to Parky. Parky was a gentleman of course and didn't humiliate or belittle Sid at all in this clip. One final thing , lovely how Sid says to Parky God bless ya at the end 😊
Sid did not like being interviewed as his wife Val said, Sid felt he had nothing to say. He was an actor, not a comedian. He was not a stand up performer. He literally acted for a living and entertained people. Unlike Kenneth Williams who was also a superb raconteur, Kenny was the darling of the talk shows because he had an opinion on everything and everyone - Sid didn't. Also Kenny was more political when speaking in interviews, Sid avoided politics altogether, because he was afraid he would alienate his fans if they knew his politics, which is another reason he rarely gave interviews.
I was working in London in 1974 at BBC Radio 2 when Sid James was scheduled to do a recorded interview plugging/discussing his latest movie "Carry On Dick". I remember it well as he was late, and when he did arrive he was, not fine a point on it, pissed out of his head. He was so out of it that the recording could not be used even after heavy editing, his speech was slurred and incoherent at times. He seemed more interested in speaking about horseracing than his actual movie. He looked haggard and as if he had slept in the tweed suit he arrived in, I recall it so well even after nearly 50 years as I was so shocked at his appearance and behaviour.
Sid James was a great laugh as to all the carry on films always to but a great actor in all the laugh and cackle gave it all miss when watch them still always 😢❤
Love the interviewer comment sid just came back making a carry on film then asking next one 😂 After many decades the show never gets old. 😂 still enjoy watching to this day. Him, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Joan sims are my favourite cast. Great acting in each film!!! 👏👏
Absolutely fantastic, taken far to soon but never forgotten sir you are sorely missed thank you for your gift of laugh god bless you and your golden heart and soul rip sir!🙏❤😢
@@bhavnamistry1389 I'm from Nuneaton but was born in Coventry, if you and your family ever come to Torrievieja in Spain do look me up, I'm James by the way, tarot by Amber is my professional name
It's like he's tring to hide the fact his real name is Solomon Joel Cohen (Jewish), was born South African, worked as a hairdresser before acting and isn't really a British working man at all.
Both Jewish, both beneficiaries of Jewish nepotism in the entertainment industry, both playing 'British' characters. As for Daniel Radcliffe playing Harry Potter....
That I think was the premiere of Love Story on the eve of the first Ali vs Frazier fight (The Fight of the Century). Sid was looking forward to that. I may be wrong but Harold Lloyd passed on this very day.
If my nan were still alive she'd be the spitting image of Mrs. Bates as she had lost the ability to swallow so she couldn't eat, was virtually paralysed from the neck down but somehow was still able to scrape her grey hair back into a tight bun.
I don't know how Parkinson got a reputation as an iconic interviewer....he was appalling. Stiff, humourless, awkward, brusque and very dull. You can see Sid can't wait to get away. He's like a geography teacher with a mic.
It cuts short of the Moment Sid Dies Live on air. Just as Michael Is turning the address the Camera, A woman Is seen spraying Perfume Into Sid's face. He then slumps on a chair and rolls His head back, To which People start laughing, thinking this was a act. He Rolls His Eyes and He Is gone. RIP Sid James Comedy Legend.
Nonsense! You are getting confused with Arthur Askey as that is how he met his end. Sid croaked onstage at the Sunderland Empire during a matinee of 'The Mating Game' in 1976.
My god! It is unbelievable that Sid James was 58 years old in this clip, yet he looks very aged and decrepit - almost identical to one of Sammi Davis Jnr's bollocks, in fact. He clearly lived a very full and active life!
Good old Sid. His work still makes us laugh almost 50 years since he died. ❤
I always thought he was a proper East End lad and was amazed to find out years later he was South African.
Both Sids parents were cockneys that had emigrated to South Africa..
Legendary geezer. It's almost like He didn't have to act at all. He just had to play himself. Every blokes hero.
Alternatively this may actually have been the act.
and that laugh! A unique one off guy
He spent his entire career pretending to be British.
Mark Harrison: I think he had dual nationality.
Who cares... he was a funny guy and made a lot of people laugh!
The amazing Sid. Dead nearly fifty years, yet he is still on tv and people who were born after he passed still know who he is. Brilliant.
He had the Greatest Laugh In The History Of The Planet!!!
Indeed. It is hard not to laugh along with him when you hear it. It’s part dirty old man, part raunchy adolescent, and 100% hilarious!
Waharha true
I wish he was still around. Total legend.
He seemed a proper bloke, no bull with him, legend.

He was just the best !
He was very funny Love the carry on films .rip Sid always remembered 🙂
The great Sid James genuis top bloke great man .. sadly missed by many
Great , been in so many great films
Rest his soul. Died just 5 years later.
Sid James hated doing interviews. He was very nervous being himself. This clip is a classic example.

@@lesselp Bore off.
I don't think he appears nervous at all.
He was often described as a natural at being natural which suggests that he had no problem being himself.
Presumably, given the 'Cassius' remark, this is March 1971, when he lost to Frazier.
King Sid .
What a Legend!!!
Sid James and his distinct laugh - may he RIP, love Bless This House and all the Carry On films he starred in
What a nice guy
One of my heros.
classic . . .solomon cohen . . !
There's never been anyone like Sid James.
One thing you can't do with Legends is replace them..😉 what a top geezer. R.I.P. sid..😔
I just love how the carry on crew just didn’t give a shit when they wrote their work. They were just so outrageously funny
RIP Sid James
What a legend
Love sid James hahaha haha 👌
Love sid James and that laugh wow great actor
Rest In Peace Eternal Sir Sidney James , a fellow Jew , who should’ve been Knighted, like so many others in the Carry On Gang 💯👏👏👏👍
TH-cam time machine.
His laugh always cheers me up. British Legend...sorry South African Legend
Today I bought carry on matron. then as i was looking through the cast it dawned on me that they are all dead😢
Dawned of the dead..
Pure gold
Sid James is a Legend!!! 😎👍
What a character, one of the greats.
Love him.
I have read that Tom Oliver, later to play Lou Carpenter in Neighbours, used Sid’s laugh in his first role in No.96
Great actor from south Africa😊

"A good laugh at Cassius." So I guess the Ali-Frazier fight was on that day?
British legend

Is it just me or did Sid seem a little uncomfortable talking to Parkinson? I heard that away from the camera Sid could be quite shy in some cases
Lead pipes; fortune made.
''...ick, ike, 'ock ''

We don’t have characters like this in film/ on stage anymore. We’re much the poorer for it.
Sid's been dead since I was 6. And I'm nearly 50 now!!

Ye he died about 6 months before I was born but he's gave me many a laugh
