His delivery of "Oh Hello" is supreme. He always made me smile and was a hugely talented English comedian. He, alongside Kenny Williams, has to be treasured. Thank you for keeping his name alive and remembered. He was one of the greats.
You asked about The Army Game which was on TV in the late 50s early 60s the others I can remember the was the short Actor Alfie Bass,Harry Fowler, Michael Medwin and Bill Frazer who played Sargent Claude Smudge with Alfie Baseremember

It's very sad to hear that Charles was so happy on-screen and lonely off ,when you watch the carry ons Charles had a presence on these films and would be missed if he wasn't in them and he deserves just as much credit as Sid James and Kenneth Williams ❤
It's indeed heartbreaking to learn about Charles Hawtrey's off-screen struggles, especially considering the joy and presence he brought to his on-screen performances. His unique charm and comedic timing made him an indispensable part of the Carry On films, and he undoubtedly deserves recognition alongside the other iconic stars. Thank you for highlighting his contributions and acknowledging his talent, and thank you so much for watching the video - it's always appreciated! xxxx

Many thanks for this. I remember him right back from his Army Game days. (There are DVDs available, but check the details before you buy as he wasn't in the later episodes.) Way back in the 70's, a mate of mine was out and about with the lads in Sheffield and as they passed the Grand Hotel, Charles was spotted walking up the steps of the main entrance. One guy shouted out to the others and pointed. On hearing his name, Charles turned, smiled and shouted "goodnight boys".
Thank you for sharing this delightful story! It's amazing how memories of chance encounters can stick with us through the years. It's so lovely to hear a positive memory of Charles and his charm and wit shine through in your story. Cheers for sharing this wonderful reminiscence! xxxx
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre I read somewhere that the reason he drank so much and lived as a recluse was because he couldn't come to terms with his sexuality.
Charles Hawtrey was one of my favourite actors in the Carry On films, the one where he was in a hospital bed being visited by his pregnant wife, maybe Carry On Doctor, he had all the pregnancy symptoms, so funny.
Yes, I remember that one. Your comment has me giggling with the memory of that image of Charles experiencing his wife’s pregnancy. I loved all the Carry On films and all the Carry On cast 💞😂😂😂
What a wonderful presentation. Charles Hawtrey, despite his peculiar and abrasive personality offscreen, will, I'm sure, be remembered forever with great fondness.
I keep coming back to this episode, because it is such a joy. Poor Charles was such a bizarre gentleman, even so you showed his memory respect and dignity.
Exactly the same could be said of Kenneth Williams for similar reasons. Neither had anything in life except their mothers and their sexuality, this in an age when self-hatred was expected of homosexuals, who were then treated as criminals. It is interesting that Barbara Windsor was a good friend of both, and both despised the Carry On films which were the source of their fame.
An absorbing and splendid bio of Charles. Thank you so much for making it. I worked with him a couple of times. You might be interested to know he was particularly proud of coming from Hounslow, Middlesex he’d always correct people if they said he was from London.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your personal connection to Charles! It's lovely to hear that he took such pride in being from Hounslow, Middlesex-what a great detail! I really appreciate you adding that, and it's wonderful to hear from someone who worked with him. Thank you again and for watching too! 😊
They didn't like each other.. many similarities in their lives. However, they were wonderful actors, they made us laugh while going through their own difficulties.
I can't imagine what it must have been like to grow up gay in a time when it was shamed as a sickness that was punishable with prison for practicing, but I have to wonder whether he was also on the autistic spectrum before high functioning autism was recognised. He was certainly very talented and I will always remember him the most in Carry On movies.
Thank you so much for your comment - I agree, I think there would have been more going on for Charles and it is possible that he was autistic but it's difficult to say without a medical diagnosis - it was awful era in terms of being gay - Charles had a lot to cope with while being in the public eye, including his mother's dementia - while also trying to earn a living and sustain a career x thank you for watching xx
Clearly his sexuality was the reason for his seclusion and with a high and mighty it was inevitable he wouldn't be popular with folk. However a legend in his own right.
I love the fact that Kenny Williams called him a Slut! Also in later life he lived in Deale, home to the Royal Marine band. When his flat caught fire he was found stripped in the arms of a young bandsman! 😂❤😅 He also did a lot of work for childrens charities. He was a lovely man- a founding father of Camp comedy.
Lovely balanced review of his life. It's a shame that his off-screen persona was so contrasting to the on-screen one, no-one should pass away that alone. But yes, let's celebrate the entertainment value of the chap we saw on screen, he was one of a kind.
Thank you so much! I do agree - it is such a shame how things went for him - if he’d of made a few different decisions maybe he would have been less lonely - and more successful in his career as far as getting more jobs - although he has cemented himself into comedy film history! ❤ thank you for watching xx
His life parallels that of Kenneth Williams. Both died alone and in mental torment. He was a product of the times. The experience of gay men back then was the same as that of Oscar Wilde, half a century earlier. Hiding behind a facade, terrified of exposure, no wonder so many gay men were actors, they had done it all their lives. Police officers used to visit public toilets in plain clothes to entrap gay men. Imagine that happening today.... Alan Carr, Tom Allen, and many others proudly proclaim their sexuality, back in the 50's and 60's that would be professional suicide and risk a prison sentence. No wonder their mental health was so precarious
@@Neil070 True comments. How badly the State acted then. Some countries still do. Shame on them. At least the UK is now an equal country. To hell with discriminators. Tremendous bio
Charles was a supremely talented actor who worked hard & achieved highly. A tortured soul & phenomenally lonely. Ironic that he brought so much laughter & happiness to millions. Thank you for this powerful & honest tribute which is presented so well.
I have been meaning to find a Charles Hawtrey doc for YEARS but have always got bogged down with the crap of the modern era of nonsense. Yet, somehow, this thumbnail popped up to remind me?! INCREDIBLE! I always found his concentration levels jarring and yet at the same time part of his likeability. By that I mean he CONSTANTLY looked at the camera as if reading his lines below or looking for affirmation that he was funny. He was funny NO DOUBT! WOW! Even back then some "fans" were totally disrespectful to someone of fame. Seeing someone famous doesn't give you the right ask for anything. Just tell them "Hey, I love your work and thank you" then EFF oof! 13:43 GOD BLESS YOU for showing that R.Whites Lemonade advert from the 80's OMG! MY CHILDHOOD :D I used to perform for my mum to that lol. You adding flowers at the end while picking off dead stems was VERY touching. Your DEEP DIVE into his life was nothing short of STELLAR! Great job lady.../many hugs for this : ]
A truly troubled soul yet once if front of the camera you would never know how this man suffered from his demons. A talented actor and a true star of "Carry on" I have the complete Carry on set that I watch weekly. As a rule I never watch documentaries about the actors personal lives as I want to remember them for their screen presence. But you did a wonderful job of presenting Charlie even though troubled in a beautiful compassionate way. Thank you
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! You really have made my day ❤ I’ve got the dvd box set too - I dread the day I wear it out 🤭 I love watching them because I know if I’ve had a grotty day I can be sure I’ll feel better watching a Carry On film! ❤
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Charlie isn’t the easiest carry on star to do a biopic but put it aside a genius. Sadly we live in a different era. But he’ll live on in our dvd players. Oh! I must dig out the photo I took of Diana Dors for you. I met her and had a chat as a young man. Always my dads fav. So glamorous.
Omg!!!!! I can’t tell you how much I would love to see that photo!!!! Thank you! Your dad’s taste - impeccable!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ and yes - sadly it’s all so very different now! Xxx
I love the carry on films. They evoke the britain of yesteryear, the seaside postcard humour, and British life and sense of humour, sadly all gone now. It’s a tragedy what has happened to britain in the last 25 years.
There’s a lot about British Life in the era of Carry On that we are well rid off. Too much nostalgia with rose tinted spectacles over idealises the past

For me Charles was always my favourite Carry On actor. Without him the films were lacking something vital for me. I feel sad that he didn't have a happier life as he brought so many laughs to others.
This was a beautifully and carefully made documentary. You have shown a great deal of respect and understanding for a well-loved star with a very troubled private life. Well done. Your presentation and research are also excellent.
Thank you so much for your gracious and thoughtful comment. I deeply appreciate your kind words about the video. Your acknowledgemnt of the presentation and research is truly encouraging and I am grateful for your positive feedback - thank you for watching the video! xx
I was very lucky to meet him when I was a young child when I was around 7 or 8 year old. His flight from Prestwick had been delayed. He had visited a hotel I was at with my mother when he walked in. I recognised him from TV and went across and asked him for his autograph. He was a true gentleman and gave his wonderful smile and gave me his autograph. He was so polite and friendly.
I absolutely loved the Carry On films as a kid and still do! Charles was ruined by alcohol sadly. Kenny Williams has some things to say about him in his fantastic diaries 😊
They were - although Kenneth complained about Charles in his diaries - but then he complained about everyone 😂 Kenneth also visited Charles in Deal - and Charles claimed that his favourite people were Kenneth and Barbara Windsor. x
Charles Hawtrey , a star who instantly provided movie magic to every scene , his chemistry was infectious and our laughter was his reward . His cameo appearance in the movie 'What a Whopper' (1961) is an absolute gem .
In my eyes Charlie was a star. I loved him and Kenneth Williams in the Carry On Films. Both men were never given the credit or recognition they rightfully deserved for the great talent they possessed. My daughter shares her Birthday with Charles Hawtrey albeit 102 years apart.
Great video! Fair and balanced. Charles Hawtrey was obviously an introvert and extremely shy. Such people are misunderstood by almost everyone as they mistake this for aloofness, which it most definitely isn't. That combined with homosexuality and alcoholism, it is amazing that he achieved what he did.
Thank you so much for your lovely and insightful comment - I completely agree with you - and I thought that myself - not just with Charlie but other stars of the past who despite their problems managed to bring us so much happiness in their performances and achieved so much! Also, thank you for watching! It's greatly appreciated xxxx
@@johnmc3862 Many performers and comedians in fact can be quite shy and withdrawn in normal life. I've made my living as a full-time university lecturer and part-time instructor, and am and look confident and talkative in front of a class, but can be inhibited in day to day exchanges. I am not of course an actor or comedian but often feel in my element before a class or crowd.
I couldn't care less about his problems, personal life or dislike for others. The guy was and still is an acting legend amongst us fans. Growing up watching characters and shows/movies involving Charles Hawtrey, Sir Norman Wisdom, Leonard Rossiter, Steptoe & Son, Laurel & Hardy, On the Buses and George & Mildew wre my best memories from childhood. Great video, shame you didn't have a clip of his singing that you mentioned.

What a lovely surprise! Thank-you very much for doing this and for devoting over 25 minutes to the subject. Charlie is so often disparaged or overlooked completely among the Carry On team, yet he was essential to the films' success. I especially enjoyed his interplay with Kenneth Williams. Carol worked with both of them in Carry On Teacher, of course. Bless all three. They gave so much. ❤
My absolute pleasure! I loved making this video - and I agree with you entirely - Charlie was integral part of the team - I adored him in every film he was in and it never felt the same watching the films he wasn’t in! I’m also a massive fan of Kenneth Williams and Carol White! I look around at todays celebrities and I just don’t have the same enthusiasm! Thank you so much for watching ❤❤❤
What a brilliant and fair recollection on his life. He seems to have a lot in common with Kenneth Williams, Without the alcoholism. I think bitterness set in through a lack of a special Other half in both their cases. Born into a time where homosexuality was illegal I feel for their lack of that special other half. Your flowers like your tribute were so fitting And the conclusion at Carol Whites resting place Poignant. Her roses also perfect. Thank you for such an enjoyable reflection On Charles Hawtreys life.
Thank you so much! It’s interesting with Kenneth Williams - from what I’ve read he was often a little bit envious of how relaxed Charles was about his sexuality - although of course I don’t know if that’s true but looking at the situation from the outside it does sound possible ❤ Such turbulent lives - including the beautiful Carol’s ❤ Thank you for watching - it’s greatly appreciated xx
He rather comes across as someone who thought very highly of himself, felt thwarted by the lack of stardom, and considered the rest of the cast of Carry-On to be utterly beneath him. The episode of him dressing extravagantly on the beach and mocking the locals in Deale sounds like he didn't want to admit that he was slumming it in front of forner colleagues.
Beautifully made. Suffering with a horrible Covid bout I have been forced to isolate and watch endless movies and turned to the “Carry On” series of my youth which was spent in England. I’ll never forget watching CH in “Carry on Nurse” (I think) and wetting my trousers watching him conduct silently to some classical music he was listening to! Very nostalgic all this. I left England for good in 1995 and now live in NZ but I still miss the England of my childhood and youth…
Oh no! I hope you are beginning to feel better! Thank you so much for your lovely comment about the video - the Carry Ons were a big part of my viewing experience growing up - that were just so happy and funny - and Charles was wonderful in them! I hope you're at least having good weather in NZ - it's been very grim here this past week - grey dull skies and heaps of wind and rain! xx
Thank you for another truly wonderful video of Charles Haw-trey. You have a warmth and wonderful way of paying tribute to these wonderful people and souls. I’m sure they all appreciate the fact you take the tent to do this and go to their final resting place

I had a chance to speak with Peter Rogers not long before his death and after we had concluded the business we had been engaged in: he sat and told me stories about his dealings with certain members of the 'Carry On' team. He claimed he absolutely detested most of them and evidence of this was to be found in the casting decisions made during the late 1960's and into the 1970's, with the parts written for the actors deliberately and viciously lampooning their real-life weaknesses and foibles. Charles Hawtrey's role as Dan, Dan the Lavatory Man in Carry On Screaming was one of these. For a man whose fortune was made working with these staples of British comedy, his attitude horrified me. Fine little documentary. Well done.
What a lovely, respectful, informative and entertaining video. I've often wondered about Charles Hawtrey and his life, so this was quite an eye-opener. He seems to have been rather self-destructive and very good at pushing people away from him, but there was no denying his comedic talent on screen. Thank you for making this.
Hawtrey had a massive chip on his shoulder a very unpleasant man. He never got over that he'd not be ahead liner like Sid James and Kenneth Williams. He was never going to be other than supporting cast and that's what his problem was. His mother was always making out he was going to be a major star. He was also a horrible drunk who was unpleasant to anyone who went near him.
Thank you so much for coming back for a second watch! I'm really glad you're enjoying the video enough to revisit it. 😊 Your support means a lot and you've absolutely made my day! xxxx
I remember watching the Army Game in the 1950s with my father an ex Army man and it was very funny at the time. It featured many army conscript jokes that the ex conscripted soldiers at the time all understood and loved .
Thank you for this wonderful tribute to Charles. I am sure so many of us of a "certain age" can recall him and his great contribution to film. This was a very well done video with so much information and pictures that celebrates one of Britain's great comedy actors. RIP Charles.

I agree - I’m not sure if Charles realised - I think most of the attention was on Kenneth and Sid - must have been difficult for him! Xxx thank you for watching xx
Fabulous tribute to a comedy legend I came to adore during my childhood in Ireland watching and laughing with my family in the many Carry on movies that we watched multiple times through the years, you were always top of the bill I in our home Charlie along with Sid, Kenneth and Barbara RIP to them all and RIP to real comedy which seems to have passed away in recent times also.
Thank you so much!!!! The Carry Ons were a big event in our house too growing up - and still are to be honest! I have to say I can’t name a modern comedian that comes anywhere near the likes of the Carry On cast and others from that era - I think there are too many rules and regulations now for them to be truly creative and funny ❤

In the mid 60s Charles was often seen in Wimbledon riding a ladies bike with a basket on the handlebars. Wearing kaki shorts, long hooped socks and a flamboyant shirt. Looking please with himself if someone recognised him. But riding off with his nose in the air if anyone approached him. We all assumed that he was living in Wimbledon, as a lot of actors did at that time.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the documentary. Charles Hawtrey's legacy is truly remarkable, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to shed light on his contributions to entertainment xxxx Thank you for watching - I'm very grateful! xxxx
This is an excellent retrospective. Thank you. To be frank, Charles was one of the better performers in the Carry On line up. A strange looking individual, who looked right at home in the farcical, outdated world of innuendo and tired old jokes. Sid James in drag was not a patch on Charles Hawtrey playing it straight. Thank you again for a fair and honest summary of one man's life.
Loved the carry on films and Charles was excellent in them. The ending tributes to both Charles and Carol caused another lump in my throat for your personal and the respectful commentary. 🙏
I’m afraid to say he reminds me of myself during a stage I went through where I knew I could unintentionally offend any more sensitive folk I talked with, but got so tired of staying in, being picked on, or apologising, that I decided to be boisterously irreverently honest to all, and friendly only with the ones who laughed (usually the more naive/young). It wasn’t till late in life that I was finally diagnosed with autism, and understood where I lacked the ability to empathise with certain others and how that might cause offence. I wonder if Charles was just undiagnosed?
To be honest that is such a good point - thank you for your comment - I do believe that could be very possible - it's easy to judge without fully considering the whole picture - thank you so much for watching xx

Loved the Carry On Films. He was right up there with the rest. My daughter who is 33yrs old always puts a Carry on Film on when she is a bit down, but it has to be one with Charles in it, or she won't watch it. Lovely story telling as always. Thanks.
Thank you so much Peter! They’re awesome and like your daughter - if I’m feeling fed up - I put on a Carry On and it usually does the trick! Thank you for watching ❤❤❤
What a wonderfully sensitive review of Charles Hawtrey’s life. He was simply fantastic all the Carry On movies he did, and regardless of his foibles and imperfections, I will remember him fondly. Thank you for being so kind to him.
My pleasure! thank you so much for watching! I completely agree with you - he was a fantastic member of the Carry On cast regardless of his sometimes challenging personality! xxxx ❤❤❤
Grew up with the Carry On movies; together with Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey always was the true core and heart of them. Before watching, I had no idea at all, what kind of life he actually had. It is so terribly saddening . This wonderful artist has gifted my younger self so many joyful evenings in front of the television. He should have had a more joyful time on this Earth himself. Thank you for putting all this effort in telling us about him! And may his soul rest in peace.
My parents and use to go to see The Carry On Movies beginning the summer I turned 13. Charles Hawtrey was hilarious! My heart goes out to him for all the suffering he endured.
1988, I was 8 years old, I never knew he died that long ago, I enjoyed the carry on movies as a Child growing up in Ireland. Fascinating and wonderful tribute to Charles Hawtrey. Can't believe no family or friends attended his funeral. Too many Men are too attached to their Mothers, look at Elvis Presley , he went off the rails after his Mother died of Alcoholism not helped by the fact he was in Germany and she couldn't bear it. Some Mothers really need to cut the Apron strings and encourage their Son's to mix with other kids and make friends. Living with your Mother as an Adult is never good and I don't mean that in a bad way because you'll always be treated like a Child.
I do agree with you but I have to say I was unable to find many details of his relationship with his mother growing up - what was apparent though is that young Charles was actually quite popular and would have the local children in his garden when he was very young and he would sing, act, dance etc - put on plays with them too - so it's hard to identify where it all went wrong for him xx
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre The drink probably didn't help much especially in later years and probably made him depressed as excessive alcohol can do, perhaps he suffered from severe depression which was never treated.
That was great, very happy to find your Channel, now at 62 I'm looking back to those days and movies/shows of my childhood even, when life was allowed to be Fun. God Bless.
Charles was also a terrific Piano player. A short example can be seen in the "Pub Scene " in "Passport to Pimlico". I'm amazed more use was not made of his talent.
We are what we are. To me, this man was very funny in the Carry On's and was a much needed cog in that team of funny people. If you can make people smile n laugh, you have a gift, which he had, despite what was happening in his life. He gets a 🥇from me.
This is so true! For me he just have such happy memories of childhood and the family watching the films and so much laughter! My absolute pleasure! ❤ Charles was wonderfully talented and creative ❤ apart from his over use of alcohol and cigarettes which horribly affected his physical and mental health - he was totally fabulous ❤❤❤ as I’m sure you are too ❤❤❤
Aw so glad it was a memorable video on a character from the carry on films,he was so funny, but very funny looking( not in a critical way),which he fitted the part brilliantly, thanks love your channel ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so very much!!!! Charles was certainly a complex character - he was for me such a major part of the Carry Ons! ❤️❤️❤️ thank you for watching xxx
My mum and dad took me to see my first carry on film in 1969 , Carry On Camping . I was eight and I was hooked on the films after that lol. I love those films . Its true that behind a clowns face many a tear is shed. I thought Charles Hawtrey was brilliant, and I still do. It seems the more amazing and funny the character the sadder the private life , Kennith Williams being another brilliant and funny soul. I still watch them now as a pick me up if I feel down.
I watched them with the family growing up too - very happy memories! And I still turn to them for a pick me up as well - you can't fail to laugh - they were brilliant - thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the video - it's greatly appreciated! xxxx
So glad that Charles is the one from the channel to have gone viral, my favourite carrier on! I'd love to see one about Barbara Windsor, still can't believe she's gone.
Thank you so much for your comment! I'm glad to hear you're excited about Charles Hawtrey going viral-he truly was a unique talent in the Carry On films. Barbara Windsor was another incredible star, and her loss is deeply felt. I appreciate your suggestion and I will definitely be making a video about her. Stay tuned! xxxxx
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre It's still very soon. I do love that you put flowers down for stars who have been forgotten by a lot of people and that their resting places are not as well loved. What a wonderful tribute. Visited his house in Deal last year. Always had a soft spot for Charles. To be a hero of mine you have to be flawed and good old Charles passes that need with distinction.
I hear you!!!!! What is that saying - applied to women but I think applies to everyone - 'Well behaved women seldom make history' I think a magazine editor said it in the 1970s but I can't be sure - either way - I think the flaws are often what endear us more so than the perfection - and who is to say what is perfect anyway? Other than me saying Diana Dors is - haha - actually the truth is I love Diana Dors more for her faults than anything because she was honest about them and made mistakes - but rolled up her sleeves and moved forward - she got on with the job of living - and I find that inspirational in so many ways! and of course fascintating, intrugueing and interesting! xxxx as in the case of Charlie xxx
What a well made video. I grew up on Carry On films yet I never knew much about Charles, despite him being one of my favourites. Well done you and thank you for such a lovingly crafted biopic of him.
His delivery of "Oh Hello" is supreme. He always made me smile and was a hugely talented English comedian. He, alongside Kenny Williams, has to be treasured. Thank you for keeping his name alive and remembered. He was one of the greats.

Cheers for sharing this wonderful reminiscence! xxxx
The fact this video has nearly 650,000 views in one month shows how curious people are about him. Great work.
Thank you so much! xx
Charles Hawtrey, never got the recognition he deserved. He was in a lot of classics. He was a talented actor.
Very true! thank you for your comment x
I have to disagree , he never got the recognition he wanted , big difference ..he was very well recognised and loved but he wanted more
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre I read somewhere that the reason he drank so much and lived as a recluse was because he couldn't come to terms with his sexuality.
@@jeanmesseih3963 I love Frankie Howerd's reaction to it when Charles Hawtrey's character asks if it's his first baby.
He is also the detective tailing Mr. Bliss in Carry on Loving.

Thank you so very much! I appreciate your comment! Xx
Poor fellow. He gave so much pleasure without gaining much himself. Your video is a splendid memorial to a performer who deserves to be remembered.
Thank you so much! xxx
Looks like he had a grand old time ❗nobody can expect more
Exactly the same could be said of Kenneth Williams for similar reasons. Neither had anything in life except their mothers and their sexuality, this in an age when self-hatred was expected of homosexuals, who were then treated as criminals. It is interesting that Barbara Windsor was a good friend of both, and both despised the Carry On films which were the source of their fame.
Charles was definitely one of my favourite characters in the carry on films! RIP Charles, I bet you're making all the angels roll with laughter. 😇💙💐
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching! xxxx
What a nicely made and non-judgemental film. Thank you, from a life-long fan of the Carry On series.
Very sympathetically done. As a gay man born in 1952 I can empathise with his travails.
Thank you so much - I cannot imagine how it must of felt back then - just absolutely horrible - so glad things have changed x
Lots of comedians have sad lives...They are good actors and are just playing a part...Thank you Charles Hawtrey...
It’s hard work making people laugh! Charles Hawtrey was wonderful at the job! Thank you so much for your lovely comment! Xxxx
It seems some actors can lose their true selves after playing many roles. After all, who is one, when one can wear any cloak they choose?
Along with Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey was one of my favourite Actors. R.I.P. both of you, you always made me laugh.
They were both favourites of mine too! xxxx
They didn't like each other.. many similarities in their lives. However, they were wonderful actors, they made us laugh while going through their own difficulties.
His loneliness and choices in life are so sad. I feel surprisingly tearful and sad for him
I can't imagine what it must have been like to grow up gay in a time when it was shamed as a sickness that was punishable with prison for practicing, but I have to wonder whether he was also on the autistic spectrum before high functioning autism was recognised.
If they didn’t love him for who he was then they were never friends
I love the fact that Kenny Williams called him a Slut!
Also in later life he lived in Deale, home to the Royal Marine band. When his flat caught fire he was found stripped in the arms of a young bandsman! 😂❤😅
He also did a lot of work for childrens charities.
He had such a filthy laugh too, which in turn made me laugh 😂❤

Both men were never given the credit or recognition they rightfully deserved for the great talent they possessed.

@@johnmc3862 Many performers and comedians in fact can be quite shy and withdrawn in normal life. What a lovely surprise! Thank-you very much for doing this and for devoting over 25 minutes to the subject.

What a brilliant and fair recollection on his life.
He seems to have a lot in common with Kenneth Williams,
Without the alcoholism.
I think bitterness set in through a lack of a special
Other half in both their cases.
Born into a time where homosexuality was illegal
I feel for their lack of that special other half.

And the conclusion at Carol Whites resting place

Thank you so much! It’s interesting with Kenneth Williams - from what I’ve read he was often a little bit envious of how relaxed Charles was about his sexuality - although of course I don’t know if that’s true but looking at the situation from the outside it does sound possible ❤
Such turbulent lives - including the beautiful Carol’s ❤

Well done.
That’s so interesting! Thank you for the information! Charles is certainly a very intriguing figure in British film history!

Charles Hawtrey was always my favourite in the Carry On films. Thank you for such a respectful and interesting story of his life .
My pleasure! Thank you so much for watching ❤ it’s very appreciated ❤
It’s sad how folks can be so loved in public and yet so alone. Always loved Charles Hawtrey in the Carry Ons. It’s a lovely thing you do to remember these people with flowers at their resting place. Hope to watch more of your vids!
It's beautiful that you leave flowers.
I've only just found your uploads, but I'm so glad I did. It is lovely to see these characters again. It takes me back to my younger days. I think I have seen all the carry-on films, so funny. I have subscribed and look forward to watching more of your content. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for subscribing! I’m thrilled to hear that you’re enjoying the content and that it brings back fond memories. The Carry On films are such a classic and timeless source of laughter. I’m excited to share more with you-so please stay tuned! 😊🎬 xxxx
Kudos for this excellent documentary work.
My absolutely pleasure! Thank you so much for your comment and for watching! It's very appreciated xx
Another fantastic video. Thank you
So glad you enjoyed it - thank you so much for watching xxxx
Charles Hawtrey was the best actor in the carry on films.
In my opinion, Joan Sims deserves that accolade - Belle, in Cowboy, the prudish girlfriend in Camping. She was so under-rated and under appreciated.
And looked like my ex- wife ❤
Loved the carry on films and Charles was excellent in them. The ending tributes to both Charles and Carol caused another lump in my throat for your personal and the respectful commentary. 🙏
It was so funny when you mentioned Carol earlier! I wanted to tell you but I love nice surprises! ❤
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre was thinking the exact thing. Hence the lump in my throat comment earlier. Again the sincerest of best wishes and thanks
My pleasure!!!! Thank you! xxxxx
Awww I love the Carry On films
For me they are such good fun -with great memories! Xx
Me too ❤😊
So did I-,as a kid I thought they were fantastic ❤️

I have subscribed. That you didn't ask for likes and subscroptions attests to your authenticity. ❤
Every production aspect of this mini-biography is superb.
THANK YOU for: Concise and coherent presentation research and for not repeating a point without reason and when you do, acknowledging/explaining its necessity for emphasis and relevance in the advancement of the story.
Additionally, you have my utmost gratitude for using photos and clips RELEVANT to the story and in sync with what is being described.
Hats-off to you for not using AI to speak your words. Your gift of a decidedly mellifluous voice brings warmth & charm and adds incalculable enjoyment for the listener.
Again, thank you for the time and attention to EVERY detail. Where I getting a class in creating online documentaries I would use this as an example of everything that is right.
I look forward to watching the one you suggest as a follow-up.
XoXo ❌💯‼️

p.s. my sister & I were avid fans of the Carry On series which usually aired in BC Canada, on Sunday afternoon or late-nite TV along with The Snoop Sisters.
Thank you so much for the incredible feedback! 🌟 You have absolutely made my day and I’m truly touched by your kind words and thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the video so much. It means a lot to me that you noticed the effort put into the presentation! Your appreciation for the personal touch and the attention to detail really makes all the hard work worthwhile.
I’m glad to know that my narration and the overall video resonated with you. It’s fantastic to hear that you and your sister are fans of the Carry On series-what a great connection! I've always loved the Carry Ons for as long as I can remember!
Thank you again for your support and for subscribing. I’m looking forward to sharing more content with you and hope you enjoy the next video just as much! 💖 xxxx
Amazing character living on beautiful high
Creatively performing in costume
Looked like so much fun 😊
Thank you for your comment! Charles Hawtrey truly was an amazing character, and his performances were always so much fun to watch. I’m glad you enjoyed the video! 😊 xxxx
This is the best and most in-depth bio of Charles Hawtry I've watched on here. Many of the others just repeat each other and are only negative, but you can see you've done your own research. Thank you again for another great video!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment!!! I enjoy the research so much ❤️ thank you for watching - it’s greatly appreciated! ❤️❤️❤️
I completely agree with you - he was a fantastic member of the Carry On cast regardless of his sometimes challenging personality! xxxx ❤❤❤
I was not expecting such a wonderful thorough caring video.
He was!!! I absolutely love them all ❤❤❤
1988, I was 8 years old, I never knew he died that long ago, I enjoyed the carry on movies as a Child growing up in Ireland.
Great actor. Loved the man in the carry on films in particular. I believe there is still an official ‘Charles Hawtry Appreciation Society’
That was great, very happy to find your Channel, now at 62 I'm looking back to those days and movies/shows of my childhood even, when life was allowed to be Fun. God Bless.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment - I totally know what you mean - we were brought up with some wonderful entertainers! xx
Charles was also a terrific Piano player. A short example can be seen in the "Pub Scene " in "Passport to Pimlico".
I'm amazed more use was not made of his talent.
A wonderful tribute, to a misunderstood man. A man of great talent, loved by many.Such a tragic end.
Thank you so much - I'm glad you enjoyed watching the video ❤
We are what we are. To me, this man was very funny in the Carry On's and was a much needed cog in that team of funny people. If you can make people smile n laugh, you have a gift, which he had, despite what was happening in his life. He gets a 🥇from me.
This is so true! For me he just have such happy memories of childhood and the family watching the films and so much laughter! It’s sad for Charlie the way things went - but as you say he had a gift and despite what was happening in his life he gave great pleasure to so many of us! Thank you so much for watching ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for this video. Charles Hawtrey is one of those old British actors who are in danger of becoming forgotten to time. I always loved his appearances in the Carry On films- Mr Widdle being one character and of course the famous line in Carry On Camping "I can't get my pole up" As kids we fell about laughing at the double entendres.
My pleasure! Thank you so much for watching ❤ I’m glad you enjoyed it - Carry on Camping is superb and that line a classic - watching them always brings back happy memories ❤
Until I saw this video thumbnail on TH-cam I had forgotten about Charles Hawtrey, however his photo bought back many memories of how funny this brilliant actor was.
Beautiful. Well researched and made with real affection. Great stuff. Subscribed. Thank you for this.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment - and I very much appreciated you subscribing! ❤❤❤ I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! Xx
Another delightful video introducing your audience to another original one-off. Merci beaucoup.
My three favourite actors in the carry on films were Charles Hawtrey, Kenneth Williams and Kenneth Connor.
They were absolutely the giants of Carry On - I love them all! xxxx
And he did have a sad ending but he’s brought me many smiles along with the rest of the actors in the carry ons
He did! I know he was a problem for many people - but as an entertainer he certainly fulfilled his remit! He gave endless laughs to so many of us ❤❤❤
What a lovely video. Unlike a lot of narrators, you showed compassion for the Gentleman. I really enjoyed watching this x
Thank you so very much for your lovely comment - I only ever feature people who i'm interested in and love - so it's always a pleasure to make the videos but I do try to give a balanced view and be honest xxx thank you so much for watching xxx
Wow, had to sub after all these vids and after my other comment on another vid never knew they existed "thanks to Y/T algorithms" there were many more! Thanks for these details and in depth vids. Loved the Carry - On's, even as a kid. Thank you BBB, you're the best xx
Thank you so much for your kind words and for subscribing! I'm thrilled that you've discovered and enjoyed the videos. It's always fantastic to connect with fellow fans of both the Carry On series and the wonderful films and stars of the past. Your support means a lot, and I'm delighted to hear that you're enjoying content. Warm regards and thank you for being a part of the community! xxxx
Thank you for this. Well researched.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! xxxx
Thank you for remembering him for me. What a delight he was. Another interpretation of the male. He saves me sometimes as I present myself to the world.
And I still turn to them for a pick me up as well - you can't fail to laugh - they were brilliant - thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the video - it's greatly appreciated! xxxx
Carry on Camping has always been my favourite.
You give them colour again. I bet Barbara still gets regular flowers whereas Esma Cannon for example, probably hasn't seen anything but pissenlits in years. (she was buried in France, I'm not being rude, it means Dandylions! 😆)
Love your channel. Once again impressed. Thank you so much for making these features on Carry On characters. Particularly the less publicised members of the cast. Well done 🎉
Thank you very much for your kind words and support! I'm thrilled to hear that you're enjoying the features on Carry On characters - especially the ones who may not always be in the spotlight. It's a pleasure to delve into the stories of these less publicized members of the cast and share their contributions to the Carry On series. Your appreciation means a lot, thank you so much for watching it's truly appreciated xxxx
My absolute pleasure! You're so welcome! Thank you for watching - it's very appreciated! x
Those Carry On movies lit up my childhood 😂...watched with my dear Dad...the first person I ever saw laughing through tears😂😂...great memories.
That's so lovely! Same here - they were just such great fun! xx
Thank you ! That was a very interesting and well presented video.
many thanks for the video - loved it.
My pleasure! Thank you so much for watching! xxxx
