It is best to make sure the eyepieces are tightly screwed together, then blow them off before cleaning them. If there is anything abrasive that you dont blow off it will scratch the eyepiece. You tighten it first to be sure you dont blow dirt to the inside.

Im guessing isopropanol is not a wise cleaning choice? 🤔 (will need to look into getting lens cleaner locally)
Thank you for good advice 😊

our microscopes in our lab have been sitting in storage for months, even before Covid. When I try to move the mechanical stage or the coarse adjustment knob, they are really hard to turn. It is as if, over time, the original lubricant on these Olympus CHT microscopes turned into a sticky paste. Hence I'm at a loss as to how to clean and lubricate the moving parts on these microscopes. I have about 40 of them that we use in the biology department and all of them are affected. I can take off the mechanical stage but it's the coarse/ fine adjustment knob that has no way to access it for lubrication. any suggestions?

Sorry for the late reply! It sounds like they probably need to be serviced by a professional. Over time, the lubricant can dry out and behave more like glue. It needs to be removed and lubricated again. I hope this helps!

The Olympus CHT is an oldie but goodie. It is worth it to keep them going. Most reasonably priced new ones are junk by comparison.

Will glasses lens cleaner solution be ok or does it require microscope-lens specific cleaner?

Many lens cleaners will work. Some streak more or less than others. But the important thing is to make sure it's ammonia-free.

Hello! Unfortunately that is an electrical problem that a professional should look at before someone gets injured. Even an electrical repair professional should be able to help.
