Dirt and residue on the surface objective lenses and filters can degrade image quality. This tip describes how to inspect lens and filters for dirt and how to clean them properly with solvent so that these expensive components will not be damaged in the process.

I enjoyed your video. Nice, complete presentation with emphasis on using quality lens cleaning paper, air brushes, and cleaning solution along with taking the time and care to do it right. Degrading a high dollar lens is sickening and once it is done, it may not be correctable. Please disregard the negative comments because anyone who is knowledgeable will certainly support your approach!

Very informative. We have a professional microscope service company come in every 6 months to do a full cleaning and calibration of the microscopes in our lab. However, this is good knowledge for those of us who like to keep our optics clean in between visits.

Great video. As you mentioned, different brands would have different solvent recommendations based on the materials they use as "lens adhesive" for example.

what will happen if i forgot to clean up the lens after using oil immersion even if it just happened once? will it degrade the image quality that much? i forgot to clean up the lens at school after using it because i was in a hurry, will it be okay once i use it again tomorrow?

Blow with air to remove dust that can scratch the lens, then use xylene + filter paper tec. or swab. Finish off with alcohol. He showed You how to do it. A chinese clip from TH-cam empasizes that when using a swab (they actually use a forceps with tissue paper), first clean the lens with a spiraling motion, going from the center to the perifery, then repeat, now from the perifery to the center. Check the cleaning with an eyepiece upside down (magnifying glass). Dont't apply too much pressure when cleaning, the tissue paper/swab must only touch the surface of the lens.

Ether, or methanol, may you please write them down to check clearly the names and where we can find them. Pharmacy or where? The lens paper cleaner where we may found?

Great job. Do you know how to clean the inside of the objective? Unfortunately, oil went inside of your objective.

I've noticed that one way to check for dust on or in the objective is to shine a small flashlight or laser pointer through the objective to project onto a surface. Any dust particles should show up nice and large.

I bought a cheap, child’s toy microscope at a thrift store but when I got it home I found a lot of black spots in the viewing field. I think they may be internal but not sure. Can they be cleaned or is the microscope toast? It’s ok if it is toast because it was only $2 and the store is owned by Big Brothers Big Sisters so 100% of the money will benefit kids, but if it can be saved so much the better

    • @naturfagstoff

Yes. Works for removing immersion oil (which is not soluble in water). Clean up the lens with alcohol after.

first rule is shave your head.
I've seen two "clean up your 'scope" videos and both were shaven dome types. I think that helps them keep hairs and dander from falling onto the scopes and other surfaces. I'll have to wear a hat. Get me a dew rag. Not shaving.
