Thanks Rich! Right up my alley. This noob appreciates the settings you supplied. Made it easy to guesstimate for my 20w xtool based upon recent burns. Gave it a whirl on 3mm hobby wood. Looks great! Fragile though, and warps a bit with concavity towards the cuts so I’ll probably mount to a contrasting backer. Next I’ll try thicker ply. Warms my heart to gift this before Christmas. Glad to be a patreon!

Rich, I did something like this a while back. The lines didn't show up too good because they were so thin. So what I wound up doing was shut off the cut layer and defocussed the lens for the lines so it would make them a little wider. I ran that, then turned off that layer. Then I refocussed the lens and turned on the cut layer and cut it all out.

At 7:08 in the video, you take the word which is all black lines and “send it to my cut path”. It then turns some black and some red. I must have missed it somewhere but how do you get the lines set up for the laser to differentiate the cut and the engrave? Sorry but I am new to all this. Looking to do some family names this way. Thanks for your time making these videos as I have learned so much already.

    • @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy

I am new to all this stuff. I spent 3 hours making one word and was proud of myself until I went to burn it and I got a message saying that 7 shapes were set to fill but weren't closed. They are referring to all those lines I drew to make the letters look like they overlap. But I don't know what that means? How do I close the shapes? Oh I just saw your note on the top of the comments. I will try in line mode for both.

Is there an easier way? 1) turn off welded text and reduce HSpace 2) put that on a engrave layer 3) make a duplicate 4) turn welded on for the duplicate 5) put the duplicate on the cut layer. Is there a reason that this won't work? BTW - love your content and all that you do. Keep up the great work.

Rich, you do great work but this has been giving me fits. No matter what I do, I have not been able to find a way to switch from fill to line. Additionally, the base pieces do not come out the correct size and end up covering up the lettering on the piece directly below. I'm fairly new to all this and it certainly could be user error, but I've purchased quite a few designs from you, steve and patrick and this is the first time I've encountered problems like this. I think I will try to download it again to see if somehow there was a malfunction in the original download. I'm using a 20w Xtool D1 Pro and a laptop.

I don't know how many ways we can have this conversation. Hundreds of folks have already made this project from the same files. On the Cuts / Layers tab, where it says Fill, pull down the menu and select line.

It was that easy for two of the three that ended up set as fill. The third was set as multi and, initially, I could not figure out how to change it to fill. Turns out I was not the only one who experienced that same problem with the latest Lightburn. They've created a sub layering approach. Their solution worked. The cross came out very nice. Don't know why the base pieces were the way they were. You once said lightburn may not work well with some laptops. Maybe that is what occurred in this instance. @@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy

This has nothing to do with the latest version of Lightburn. The patch to 1.4.5 fixed a bug in the splines in the DXF import, nothing else changed. The multi, or sub layers were added in V 1.2.00 one year ago.

Hi Dave, I don't handle the store, but I just called Linda and she said the only 2 orders from you are on 9/28/23 & 10/31/21. And she said she has no emails from you either. Please send the order # from your PayPal receipt to support@engraveandcutfiles.com or a copy of the transaction number. Pretty sure the order didn't complete, since my PayPal account only shows the order from 9/28. No messages from you in my Messenger either, so it's a strikeout all around 🤪

The original file was done at least 6 years ago... just sayin

This is a completely original file, 100% designed on my computer from scratch. And if you actually watched the video, the idea to finish it came from my friend at Valley Forged with his link in the description. Similar files have been done for the last 20 years on a laser if that's what you mean, with none of them defining the letters, which was the point of this video. There is one in Italy that's a stone carving done in the 13th century. "Just sayin" what? I do these videos to educate people who want to learn different tools and techniques in Lightburn. The file is a byproduct of the learning experience.
