Digital 12 hrs clock from digital logic IC | without Microcontroller

  • In this video, I've explained how to make a 12 hours digital clock without microcontroller. Here, I've used crystal oscillator to generate the clock pulse. Crystal oscillator provides accurate clock frequency. Then with the frequency divider IC CD4060, we're getting accurate 1 Hz clock pulse.
    This clock has four stages-
    1. Clock pulse generation
    2. MOD 60, this is for seconds hand display
    3. MOD 60, this is for minutes hand display
    4. MOD 12, this is for hours hand display

    The idea of using a bread board instead of directly using the components in the assembly is very great..pls do all your projects in the same way..its very easy for even a diy starter to understand ...keep up the good work

    it's a pitty, you don't explain anything regarding the logic.... WHY do you use the diodes, what are their function? WHY do you use the 74LS00? Why are the pins connected as they are?

    A very interesting circuit! I like how you fully explain what all the pins of the ICs are and aren't afraid of going into the mathematics of the calculations. It makes a LOT more sense than a lot of videos out there. I really enjoy these non-microcontroller circuits that rely on ingenuity rather than just programming.
    It's also nice to see a crystal being used because this is much more accurate than the usual use of a 555 timer. Could you tell me how accurate the 1 Hz is over a long period of time? Is there any drift at all? I noticed in your Part 1: How to generate 100% accurate 1Hz clock that it seemed accurate. In Part 4 of the same series the pulse was between and 59.95 Hz and 60.02Hz. Which is more accurate, the 32.768 KHz or 4.9152 Hz crystal?
    If I don't need seconds shown, couldn't I use the Part 4 output and adapt your circuit?
    Have you noticed if temperature affects the accuracy of the pulse?
    Could a CD4011 be used instead of the 74ls00?
    Thanks for the excellent video.

    • @EEWave
      @EEWave  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think 32.768 kHz is more accurate than 4.9152 MHz. I've seen nearly every watch (whether it is table clock or wall clock), they use 32.768 kHz.
      Yes, temperature affects the accuracy of the pulse. And also my oscilloscope is not so accurate so I'm not able to calculate the accuracy.
      Yes, we can use CD4011. Both are NAND Gate.
      Thank you so much for supporting me, please keep watching. My viewers and subscribers are too low.

    Where was this video 10 days ago???
    I was searching hard to find a video explaining how to make digital clock.
    Almost all video had microcontroller.
    Finally found one video, but he used 555 timer for clock. I wanted a more accurate one, so I searched and searched, and finally found a video explaining how to do accurate 1hz from crystal. (That's how I discovered this channel)
    I decided to combine those two,
    And ordered all the necessary things from a website.
    3 days later, this is in my recommended 🤦🤦🤦
    But I wish you also explained how it works, and what all the components do, while showing the circuit diagram.

      It is a CMOS IC from 4000 logic family and it drives 7 segment display (common cathode).

    Because I dont have the ic7400 now
    If that is possible give me the circuit diagram for new ic7408

    • @EEWave

      You can use 7400 ic instead of 7408 but you can't use 7408 ic instead of 7400.
      Ok, I'll give you two options, you can use 4011 or 4093 ic instead of 7400. But don't forget to see the pin diagrams. Study the pin diagram and then use it.

    My project is not working(only the pulse generator part). The pulse is generated but the seconds are not increasing and even the buttons are not working I checked the circuit multiple times but still it didn't work. When I asked someone they said they didn't understand the use of the 2nd 4060 ic, and if i try to use the pulse generated by the 1st 4060 then the seconds act like milliseconds and the minutes act like seconds.

      I haven’t finished all mod’s of this but built the pulse generator and the 2 seven segment displays.
      It count’s beautifully, except for some unknown to me, mine runs from zero to 99.😢
      Another oddity I encounter is that the pulse generator only works when I touch the IC1 4060. It’s not a short as I have built it 4 times on 4 different breadboards using different components with each build.
      Anyone experience anything similar?🤔

    Sir I have a simple question. If the 7 segment display is common anode then what should I do? Should I connect the common anode to +6v bcc?

    • @EEWave
      @EEWave  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, we can't. CD4026 doesn't support common anode display. If you want to design this with common anode, then you need ic 7490, 7492 and CD7447. The circuit will be little bit larger than this. However you can make common cathode display by yourself, here is the link:
      th-cam.com/video/q3Bqs0Gsccw/w-d-xo.html
      Or, you can use NOT gate ic with the output of cd4026. Then you can easily go for common anode display.

    • @michealmyers4515
      @michealmyers4515 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      CD 4026 can't work directly with common anode 7 segment display , maybe we will have to use NOT gate inverters at its output and then to the common anode 7 segment display and its connect the common pin to HIGH

    Since you use the Zener Diodes on EFG Segments, which is interesting, because only in digit 6 those will light up together. But the digit should reset not on 60, but on 59. Not a big deal, but putting it out there if someone comes across why the EFG lines have a diode.

    • @EEWave
      @EEWave  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good question. To minimize the display current and safety of the display, those resistors are recommended but not compulsory. As the clock circuit is large, with this the breadboard connection looks messy. To make it understandable, I just used the compulsory components. When you make it on PCB, then you should use those resistors.
