Maybe use another magnet lower down in the stream on the second pass to help more thoroughly separate the streams so that the bucket doesn't need to be so precisely placed? Maybe a longer magnet could be useful to apply the magnetic force over a longer portion of the falling sand stream?

You could use a baby buggy with a centered rotating bikewheel (driven by a chain), where a magnet is attached at special spots (let us say 90° angles) and a semicircular hard plastic sheet in between the wheel and the ground plus a dropping pot. A rake in front of the baby buggy would spread the dust in the air, the rotating magnet would attract the magnetite, the hard plastic sheet hindering it to get caught by the magnet, the magnet tracking the dust into a dropbin.
Nevadan here and I can smell this video. :) We used to just gather it with a plastic bag over a magnet. Your method works really well.

How about putting magnet under and a bit behind (to only catch magnetide) another magnet. This way you could get higher purity but in one run and not have to put the magnetide through the system again.

Make a strong electromagnet on a timer, that you switch off at regular set intervals when it becomes "full".
And add to it a deflector that moves in underneath it just before the magnet switches off, to deflect the falling manetite to a separate hopper.

instead of bringing all the partially purfied magnetite back up for a second round why not use multiple staggered magnets to have multiple purification steps during one fall. nvm seems like its pure enough after one pass
It would be cool to convert an old lawnmower to pick up the iron with an elecrro magnet that uses the switching of the magnet and kenitic force to separate the material into the lawnmower bag. I found that a simple plastic bag over the magnet makes cleanup and / or separation of the iron from the magnet much easier 😁😁

A gallon of magnetite should weigh around 43 pounds. So wouldn't that make the barrels only around 50% purity?
SG of pure solid magnetite is not the same as sand grain size. Lots of air btw grains.
Can't tell without knowing the packing coefficient

You could stack two stages of this so the tailings of the first go straight into the bucket of the second, even add another purification stage to the magnetite output of the first stage

I use a Zip Lok bag to put the magnet in so the magnetite doesn't stick to the magnet. I get mine from the beaches on Long Island NY and I use it in my pyramids for making orgone generators. I love your work and thanks for sharing. ~Cheers~ Just B.

you can use an electromagnet, ie treasure finder, to collect and purify the magnetite sand, yes with pulsing operating mode. can be combined into shovel or a shift shovel. or similar to bush berries picking tools, not getting much of the plant greens with the berries, just the berries, or the ore. actually you can get other pure conducting metal particles filtered out of the ground at same time, using the metal maglev pulse pull-push property. like gold and silver. platinum ie metals. actually a maglev induction stove under a melting crucible would work nicely. to separate metals/magnetic from non-conducting material.
Deflect the sand by putting the magnet in a plastic bucket.
How much would that sell for? I can't really find any concrete prices for magnetite powder. From some rough sources I saw that it's over a grand easy, seems like a good pay for 2 days work.
I half expected the processing to involve driving the truck down a rippled sand road to use the truck bed as a giant pan(like a gold pan).

Heat-shrink a bottle or use another type of non-ferromagnetic shielding around the magnet for easier separation of the ore.
Also: ELECTROMAGNETS (just use the microwave transformer already).
Now I understand why Ukraine started using thermite drone all of a sudden: Cody had surplus stockpiled XD
with that ammount of magnetite you are looking at about 1300-1500 lbs of thermite. thats a LOT of molten iron. If he starts melting into plates and gets a buldozer we are going to have some nice POV content.
I used to do mineral separation with a Frantz machine, which is basically just this but more precise, and with an electromagnet. Except I was doing it to get rid of anything magnetic. Other dense minerals will also deposit with the magnetite in a stream. I was looking for zircon and apatite, which are used for geochronology. Zircons are especially beautiful under a microscope because of their classic crystal structure.
You know if you had the magnet in a plastic bag then you could just remove the magnet from the bag and all the magnetite would fall off the bag. Thus keeping the magnet clean.
Welcome back cody. Great video. I agree with you. I think the second run had very little magnetite left in the tailings.
What about to put the two neodimium magnets in series. The smaller one under the bigger like 20cm far. Maybe this configuration will purify the iron oxide more. What do you think? :)
Simple and brilliant way to separate them.
I collected "black sand" from the beaches of San Diego with NEO magnets and sandwich bags.
Put the magnet in the bag and run across the beach. Once enough is collected, I just reverse the bag and get the magnet out without any fuss.
Put it in a new bag and continue... I easily collected 5 pounds in one hour.
Makes excellent core for pulse motors when moistened with a bit of epoxy and packed into any shape mold. Minimum eddy current losses.

I don't know how but Cody makes even the most common subjects interesting somehow. Shame on government for canceling his explosive licence otherwise he would do much more..
Given that gold typically follows magnetite in streams and waterways I wonder if you could pan those tailings. I doubt there would be much, but it could be interesting.
