Medications and doctors. Many border town citizens, go to Mexico for all kind of medical care. Believe it or not, medicine there actually works. Same with dental. Everything is just cheaper there. People cross the border daily for work.
I spent 3 years traveling throughout Mexico mostly by myself and I still go to Tijuana twice a month to see the girls. I grew up in central coast California in agriculture so I have spent all my life with Mexican farmworkers. It's not bad but you have to watch for the police they robbed me 5 times. The cartels won't do anything to tourists unless you happen to be caught in a shootout. The tourists areas are generally safe but yeah, honestly if something happens to you in Mexico the police won't do anything about it and probably ask you for money.

As long as the border is easy to cross Mexico violence will be up. There’s a vast amount of money to be made running product/ people over the border. The most feared cartel wins control of territory including border territory. Even smaller factions are springing up, some doing anything to prove themselves the most dangerous to compete against well established cartels/factions. Taking out the established cartels only leaves room for new ones. This has been what was explained to me by Mexican citizens when I was visiting there. I’ll visit again and be happy to enjoy the wonderful citizens of Mexico after the border has been closed.
