It Goes Together How? :: My 2nd Vintage Sewing Project :: Making The Halston McCalls 5829 Pattern

  • Hey Peeps! These pattern pieces are definitely some of the weirdest I've seen but the design and construction method is really clever. As I mention I am no expert so the pattern alterations were trail and error! I am pleased with how the skirt has turned out (with the 90 degree turn!) and I do want to revisit this style once I've made my blocks! I hope you like the sewing technique for the pivot point! I will make a mini tutorial for it soon. I will keep this skirt although I'm not sure it's going to get worn! What do you think?

A head twisting pattern alteration for sure’ 😂 But the skirt became very pretty when you turned it around 😊

I used to know exactly what was what when using a vintage pattern, in my teens, which was decades ago, lol, no, not lol. Anyway, I bought a few last year because a lot have style lines that just aren’t seen in patterns anymore. I pulled one out of the envelope and after much head scratching swiftly put it back in again, lol, yes, much lol 😂
But, I’m not going to let them beat me because one of my favourite things to do is problem solve and I really want to enjoy the challenge and be able to wear those garments! Well done you for figuring it out!

I wonder if a mitred corner would work to resolve the finishing issue on the inside of the 90 degree turn and allow it to sit flat?
Very interesting design, and great demonstration on troubleshooting the fitting adjustments with those oddly shaped pieces!

That reinforcement of the corner would be a great clip to pull out as a short or as its own small video, so people can easily search/find it.

I'm so happy that you like this skirt after all. Your facial expressions on hangout when you tried this skirt "sideways" for first time was awesome, you went from annoyed to sunny happy in seconds.

Agreed! The improvement in the skirt was so dramatic that I wondered if the pattern company had made a mistake in labeling the centers and the sides.

I love your skirt, but can't say I completely followed your pattern alterations, but that's because I am not that familiar with pattern alterations. The complete outfit looks fabulous. I hate patterns that use the clip to but not through 90 degree seam technique. I always fall foul of them and end up having to fiddle about to get it to look OK. I shall definitely try your two-step method. Thank
    you.

Sweet child of mine!! 😳😳 I need a lie down, and I've only watched the video!! 😆😆 You've a heart like a lion tackling that pattern!! 🦁 ( And I apologise for being one of the people who voted for it 🤦) It was so interesting to see how it went together, and I'd love to see how you make this skirt pattern once you've drafted your block. It definitely makes sense to draft from a pattern that's going to fit so there are no fit adjustments. Lynne

Wow, those fit adjustments were a real brain twister! 😮 It’s fascinating what a 90° shift can do for a garment - totally agree that that is the look to go for. Now, I can’t help but wonder how this might look cut from two different fabrics, a print and a coordinating solid. Maybe with a waistcoat fro the solid to match… 🤔❤️

How interesting. I wonder how much stretch there would have been from the fabric being on the bias at the waist and hip. I have a feeling the designer probably draped the pattern as a bias a line skirt with a full-ish flare and then just promptly slashed along the straight of the grain from the low hip points. What a great job you did reverse engineering the pattern. I agree about taking corner inserts in two goes. If you want to finish the corner, have you tried reinforcing with an extra square of silk organza before clipping? The extra fabric from the silk can possibly be wrapped around any raw edges? Haven’t tried to finish that way but have used extra silk organza to reinforce extreme clipped corners.

Thank you so much for sharing how’s you worked through the size changes. I’ve not done much pattern work. I did sew up a vintage pattern from the ‘50’s (I think) knowing full well it wouldn’t fit me. The dress came out beautifully and the fabric had been overdyed in pink. I would like to figure out how to increase the size to fit me…..many interestingly shaped pieces. Would probably explode my brain trying to figure it out. 🤯. Maybe some day. I agree the skirt looks much nicer turned to the side. Lovely!😊

I think my strategy would have been to make the skirt as-is using muslin, then slash from waist to hem, and add in strips of fabric to get the measurements I need, then deconstruct the whole thing, then transfer the changes to the paper pattern. Which seems like a lot more work than just modifying the paper as you did!

    • @Macasmum
