Great video. I just picked up a 1964 4020 powershift. Not running but can't wait to tear into it. Great project, Great tractor! Thanks for the videos.

Your videos have been super helpful! We are going through diagnosing a shifting issue on our late serial number 4020 PS like you had in Part 1 of this series and you outlines of splitting and what to look for have been great. Subscribed and will continue to watch!

I love your videos Jon! Both the farming and the fixing. I farm in southern Michigan but I worked at a JD dealer for 12 years after going through their tech program and I really enjoy watching you doing things like this video. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming.

Thank you so much! So happy to see a powershift getting torn down. I've got a 4430 8-speed with some issues... Slow shift in 2, 4, 6 and 2R, (or complete loss going movement), weak/chattery hydraulics except at 1800+ rpm . Leaks all over around the valvebodies. Seeing this gives me the confidence to dive into it a little deeper than I have thus far
    Thanks

Thanks for the videos on this tractor, I just bought a 4020 power shift that someone started restoring and had taken all apart so this might come in handy to help me put it back together! If you could I would like to see a detailed video on the basic functions and of "how it all works" on these power shift transmissions!

Thank you for the great videos. You are very smart and good at these repairs. My only wish would be that you had a camera/phone stand/tripod to put the phone on so when you need both hands to do something, we would be able to see the entire tear down/re-install. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!

My dad started at a JD dealer in 64. He opened his shop on the farm in 94 when the local deere dealer stopped doing ag tractors.
I went to college in 93 for JD mechanics. At that time, all the guys dad was fixing for were old, he said there will be no one to fix for in a few years. So he never wanted to build a shop and have both of us go at it.
Finally, we built this shop so he can retire. Now we have more work than ever.

What would be wrong with a late 3020 with synchro shift that grinds when shifting between the the gears when the tractor is warm. It does not grind until the tractor has been run a while and the tranny gets warm. Tractor was delivered to our farm new in 1972 and has around 3000 hours on it.

Thanks for posting this. I have a 760A scraper (basically a 5020) with an 8sp powershift in it. It has a reversing pto which doesn't reverse so I'm going to have to get into it. Do you know if this would be the same transmission as in some ag tractors? (obviously not the reversing pto part!) It would help to know what ag model would fit if I need some parts! Thanks.

You'd have a couple of grand at the Machine Shop to recondition the head, inspect the block and install new cam bearings, grind the crank, redo the rods with new wrist pin bushings.
Couple grand for the engine kit, and you still need to buy head bolts a new crankshaft dampener
Then you need to have about 800 for injectors.
pump and turbo could be a few hundred or couple grand depending on damage
To have 7-8 grand into a complete overhaul without any in shop labor is not uncommon today. But you have the best quality overhaul you can get. It sounds a little pricey but no way no how what I do at John Deere reman
