- Rob Ross lost $1 million when a hacker tricked his cell phone provider into an illegal SIM swap.
A SIM hack is an attack that occurs when hackers take over a victim's phone number by transferring it to a SIM card they control. Ross told CNN Business that by taking over his cellphone number, a hacker was able to gain access to his email address and ultimately his life-savings.
In recent years, cybersecurity breaches have become so common that some consumers may almost take for granted their information has been compromised at some point. The list of massive data breaches includes a major hotel chain, a credit reporting firm, a bank and a social network. But SIM hacks are both less talked about and yet potentially more devastating.

The hacker's name is Nicholas Truglia and 21 years old when he hacked. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was sued by cryptocurrency investors in the $100 million range last month. His life is fucked from now on. Those cryptocurrency investors will never leave him alone.

This is why SMS multifactor with banks or any other financial institution is a horrible idea. I am not against having it as an option. I am pissed that virtually every financial institution does not give you the ability to turn it off!
Cash App does a marginally better offer. With Cash App, you can choose how people try to access their accounts. I turned off the mobile option entirely.
Many years ago I locked myself out of my online banking account. So what I did was go down the nearest branch. With all the government photo ID I have. They said, the only way they could do that is if they delete my online account. Since they have overwhelming evidence who I was. It took less than five minutes.
- Plus aside from my government ID. I had the ATM card and knew the PIN. Most banks now prefer that you affirm your identity with the ATM and PIN. If you actually communicate with a Teller. One person I know, whom is getting on with age was pissed at the Rep who demanded that she use her ATM and PIN to access the account. She had government ID.
Cash App requires my PIN and a confirmation code I can only receive by email.
Email is another factor. Most email providers require some form of multifactor authentication. Failing that, you need a recovery code. So indeed making the email the bare minimal is a good idea. An OTP or FIDO key would be great secondary options. However email is flexible since you can access it anywhere there is internet. Which thanks to mobile cell technology. Is pretty much anywhere their is modern man.

His money was stolen from cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase who have no way to reverse the transaction due to nature of bitcoin. FDIC doesn't insure such transactions.

Easy fix, the network service provider should have the option for clients to choose how a sim replacement procedure should be done (via phone or by pshysical presence of the client in one of their shops). If I had alot of money that could be lost due to sim swap I prefer to do one trip to the service provider shop and back, rather than not sleeping at night that maybe someone could swap my sim.

I realize your post is three years ago, but I would like to add something. Unfortunately in my case the scammer at the carrier store gave the young man a cash bribe and recreational drugs to exchange the sim without verification. My whole life savings was stolen from me and legally the bank is not held accountable. The carrier has fired the young man who was the carrier rep at the store that accepted the bribe.
The carrier stores know of these scams. They know that there is no way to effectively stop employe theft so they have completely lawyered up to protect them
selves. I still do not have any of my money. Just like the video stated, there is no protection from someone holding the "keys" from taking bribes. I no longer bank on
line or do any transactions on line.
I mail my bills. I bank in person.
The corporations need to incur high fines every time this happens, as it is impossible to do without the assistance either wittingly or unwittingly of someone within that organisation.
The regulators are in bed with the corporations

This is why I give out my VOIP numbers everywhere and never my SIM number.
I'm deeply concerned that emails would be the only "advice" to give. There are many more secure ways to protect consumers against SIM swaps. 2FA authentication via PUSH notifications are better, using a biometric factor in that process is even better.
I agree with your statement however surely 2FA would be obselete at this point if the SIM swap has already occurred as the attacker would also receive the 2FA notice on their device. But yeah biometrics would be a great place to start but its all live and learn in the world of Cyber/User security unfortunately.

@@uberguy6508 that would be - again - putting the burden on the consumer. Of the bank or the Telco wants to pay for my Yubikey then all fine. But still, that key would help protect senior citizens, or anyone who only has a wireline and no other devices.
While those are both much more secure options, lots of companies, like many banks (including mine) don't offer any better alternatives so there's not very much I can do as a consumer, it's the bank's responsibility to improve their security

Or you can just buy a cheap phone at Walmart and only use it for sms. And has other phone for regular use
