- Hi friends!
In this video I would like to share with you one of the most colourful, noisy and ancient traditions in Bulgaria - Surva.
Similar festivals are held around the World. In Bulgaria the Surva tradition takes place between Christmas and Easter and the purpose of it is to chase away the evil spirits and to mark the end of the Winter and the beginning of Spring.
The tradition has a Pegan origin and in 2015 was included in the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The costumes are made from natural materials, such as wood, leather, or animal fur. The most important element from the costume is the belt with numerous bells attached to it.
It is believed that the sound of the Surva bells regenerates and purifies the soul.
