Pernik -Surva 2023 - The international festival of masquerade games

"Surva" in Pernik is the most authoritative event in Bulgaria and Europe of traditional folk games and customs with masks. He popularized variants of an ancient ritual that have reached today, part of the Bulgarian folklore tradition. With its competition program, the festival is a meeting of survakars, kukers, babugers, jamalars and many others. Thousands of tradition bearers from all ethnographic regions of Bulgaria and guests from Europe, Asia and Africa participate in the festival competition every year. Participants come to Pernik for the emotion, the fun, to share the magic of "Surva", to feel renewed, to wish themselves health and luck.

This must have been one of the first Surva festivals held just before the pandemic was declared over. A joyous occasion!
Cultures all over the world have used masks and sound-makers such as bells to drive away evil spirits. A festival that features masks, as Surva does, must be unique.
The variety of masking styles shown here is wonderful and mindblowing!

This is a really good behind-the-scenes video before a parade event, but I would have liked to see at least part of the parade itself if videoing was allowed.
