See I never thought it was this bad, seeing where we would walk all the time all the clubs and all that you just dont know but this footage really opened my eyes ! Thanks
Heart breaking to see such a beautiful place taken down...I keep pondering on some of the happiest times I had during my visit few years back but can't believe these scenes..
I was there last weekend and the city is slowly coming back to life. We went for a drive through the Red Zone, most of which was once residential suburbs that were so badly damaged by the earthquake that no one will ever live there again. All the houses have been cleared away, leaving only the streets and grass and trees growing where there were once dwellings. There are various plans for turning the Red Zone into wetlands and recreational areas. We stopped at Cathedral Square, which is up and running. The decision has finally been made to repair the Cathedral instead of demolishing it. The job will take - they think - ten years and cost around $30 million. The building will be dismantled stone by stone, then rebuilt from the ground up, in its original form, but earthquake strengthened. I have no use for religion, but it is right and proper that Christchurch Cathedral be restored - next to the grievous loss of life in the earthquake, the cruellest blow was the destruction of the most iconic building in the province. This was, and still is, the one building that most identifies Canterbury.
Thanks so much for showing Chch residents what the Council and Media have been too gut-less to allow us to see, to date. Instead of the funky soundtrack I'd've much rather had a running commentary by you on where you were at the time, and what you were seeing. We can listen to music any old time, but your filming is so rare and so precious and would be even more valuable if it said what it was actually seeing....and NOT seeing eg "Here at Colombo and Manchester St corner, where the XYZ was".
Very eerie. Of all the parked cars, I saw only one person in the street, and only two other moving vehicles. It felt like we were driving down a back lot to a film company!. What time of day was that I wonder?
@Zillamp3z It's basically the zone in the CBD where people are not allowed to enter, as it is too dangerous. There are still a lot of buildings that are not repaired/demolished yet.
thanks for posting this, it's only the workmen and those VIP's who seem to be the only ones who can get into the CBD, so yes many thanks to be able to see how it is, sad though of course but important to see i feel. regards
OMG :O Im starting work there next week. hope there is no second wave ...... Godbless our canti's _ Stay strong - we are all with you in these tough times.
@lemurkat looked like dry mud/liquefaction - notice how all the way thought the beginning he's driving over we roads? Muddy we roads? I think it dried in the square.
I went to Christchurch last week for 5 days and its very unsettling because the Japanese earthquake happened about 2 weeks after this and they rebuilt within 2 years. It's been almost 5 years since this. Yes there have been drastic changes. Good changes and they have rebuilt a lot but there's still things they need to do. It's been 5 years.
+Gone Tomorrow oh I know that but they have rebuilt most of it. I love New Zealand. It's where I was born but they have never and probably never will properly rebuild. Whereas Japan has made good progress and most of the damage to the city's affected is gone. That's another thing, multiple city's/towns were affected in Japan and only a few in New Zealand. They are making progress but not fast enough and as soon as they find themselves finished with rebuilding another big earthquake will occur. Even where I was born (Napier) you can see the affects from the earthquake in the 30s. Though they've rebuilt, there's cracked streets mainly on the hill and ruined houses that haven't gotten rebuilt more inland.
+Gone Tomorrow yeah fair enough. Didn't actually know about how much Japan rebuilt before this conversation. A site said that only 46% of damaged Japan had been rebuilt while 78% of Christchurch had been rebuilt. Thanks.
It looks strange - because it is the CBD - it looks busy with cars and fences but not people. When ever you see stores and business buildings you would normaly see people. However, it does look like it's getting better and my hopes are for economic growth during the Rugby!
The damaged parts of the city were completely evacuated after the earthquake and everyone moved to new housing at Rolleston, 22 kilometres southwest, where a satellite city is being built. Right now, new four-lane roads are being constructed to link Rolleston to Christchurch. Eventually, as the city is rebuilt, the refugees in Rolleston will be able to return to their homes and jobs.
that why im also ague why nobody walk arounds???what's happen to this cities look like dead cities not happening,,,????people say new zealand cities very clean??? but looking to this video ,this cities very messy not so clean ?why all street wet?? look ugly,,compare malacca historical cities malaysia much better,,,,btw im living at KL,,
Nobody "walk arounds" because it's early in the morning, just after sunrise, and city is not "very clean" and is "very messy" and "all street wet" because there had been a fucking earthquake and the street had been watered to keep the dust down, shit for brains.
See I never thought it was this bad, seeing where we would walk all the time all the clubs and all that you just dont know but this footage really opened my eyes !
Thanks
Wow that was pretty cool footage, but a few tears are happening. I miss my town. Vry well done by the way. Thank u. Hvnt yet been that far xo
I grew up in Christchurch and haven't lived there for more than 25 years but my heart is still there. To see it so broken is a tragedy.
Thanks for putting up the names of streets, hard to get one's bearings now and in answer to lemurkat - yes it is snow.
So sad, i don't even recognize these streets anymore...

The clean up crew must be working triple time! I can't believe how much they've got done in the last month.

Keep strong Christchurch, we will always support you and you guys will rebuild, wishing you all the luck in the world....
Great stuff.I didn't think it was soo bad. Was there in 2009 - 2010 on the way to Antarctica. You all take care there ! CHEERS !!
Cruising in a tank, are you? 0:11
It's somewhat unsettling seeing you drive past a place where I used to work, but on the side where there used to be another building.
Very eerie. Of all the parked cars, I saw only one person in the street, and only two other moving vehicles. It felt like we were driving down a back lot to a film company!. What time of day was that I wonder?
Thank you very much for putting this video up. Good to see what we can't as cantabrians.
I dont even recognise any of this anymore and I’ve been born and raised in Christchurch all my life. Only 8 when the quakes happened...
Finally we (Cantabs) get a chance to see what so many "celebs" have been shown. About time. Thankyou
Good shit mate. It's depressing to watch but at least you're showing a lot of us what we can't see.
You deserve a DB. Great footage and much appreciated by your fellow Cantabs.
Very good. Tragic to see so much of CCH in rubble, but thanks for the video - very simple, but very effective.
Our poor cathedral :(
Thank you for the footage.

Very huge changes the ppl of ChCh have to go through, be strong you guys, you will get there.
OMG :O Im starting work there next week. hope there is no second wave ...... Godbless our canti's _ Stay strong - we are all with you in these tough times.
I was listening to Jump by Van Halen as I watched this. I don't know why it seemed to go with it so well.
i give all my love to the christchurch rebuild and i hope the families r all okay
its changed so much since then ... cant even tell which street is what street anymore!
This is amazing, like a real life 'I Am Legend'. .
looks like things haven't changed much since I was working in there a few months ago
So what are they doing there now ? Are they fixing buildings or just waiting it out ?
@lemurkat looked like dry mud/liquefaction - notice how all the way thought the beginning he's driving over we roads? Muddy we roads? I think it dried in the square.

+Gone Tomorrow but again 5% is near or the same as 25% of NZ because Japan's very wealthy compared to New Zealand.
Nah mate you're right, I'm living in chch at the moment and I think there's still 10 years before all the buildings are back.
4:44 i saw a firetruck..... driving.... the fires are out! Are they?
Is that snow covering the square? Or dust?
It looks strange - because it is the CBD - it looks busy with cars and fences but not people. When ever you see stores and business buildings you would normaly see people. However, it does look like it's getting better and my hopes are for economic growth during the Rugby!

28 days later theme would have fit perfect
why there's no one in the streets???
