I notice with my popular song fake book, I always have it in the back of my mind when inventing, "am I challenging myself enough?" I can't be the only one who thinks like that. I will say though, a fake book is superior to easy piano score books because you are exploring with your own imagination and not someone else's arrangement.
Sorry for the dumb question. I am a musician but mostly simple stuff by ear. What are the best ways you learn songs? I assume accurate sheet music or possibly more likely focussed listening and transcribing. I can only figure out simple music mostly. Triads and Tetrads. I have heard that many famous jazzy pianists learned by ear from recordings. I wish I could work out trickier stuff. Do you rely more on sheet or ear transcribing? I think Herbie Hancock said he studied Earl Garner LPs. Seems too hard for me. Maybe that is a crucial skill to learn.
I don't have a lot of experience with lead sheets yet, but I absolutely hate it when they get things wrong in sheet music. I don't mind so much if it's in a different key, because you can do 'em in any key.
The lead sheet of "Take 5" in The Real Book also doesn't mention the Db9 chord played after the Cbmaj7 and Abm7 chords when the song shifts from the stand Em to Bbm7 chords.
Thanks for great video but you make it seem as if the lead sheet created its self is it possible the creator/writer of the lead sheet didnt understand the `more complex` chords to include them?
Years ago when I used to work near a sheet music department I would skim through the Fate books and wonder why they were all red and completely wrong yet they're still so popular?
I downgraded this because it’s 90% “what’s wrong with lead sheets.” It gives very little information on how to use one. If you’re only going to watch one or two videos about lead sheets, go somewhere that will build your store of information. That said, this is easy to understand and the “instructor” seems knowledgeable. Maybe it’s just poorly titled.
Agree 100% with you. At no point in time was there any direction on HOW to use a lead sheet. This should be titeld "advantages/disadvantages of using a lead sheet."
Mirror music, copy cat is full written music. Designer music to make it your own is lead sheets. Other wise just listen to the original recording and don’t play a musical instrument. Are you a mirror musician or an artist. Do yo paint by number to make a painting? Or are you an artist? Memorize is is mirror musician training. Artistic musicians need not listen to this discouraging video.

Thank you for this video! By the way, don't forget, fakebooks are available pop, broadway, and yes, rock and r/b!

This is great! Thanks. Hopefully you will make a video on transcribing songs by ear, because some chords are quite tough to get right.
Cheers, mate. I'll see what I can do.
Incorrectness of these fake books actually makes those songs cool! And even reharmonising
the sound of the piano has gone better!!!sounds so good actually!
Good. Finally got around the buying a cheap mic. Nothing too flash, but a bit of an improvement.

Really good, thanks! Subscribed
welcome back, Master! And thank you for this one (out of curiosity: do you have absolute or relative ear?)
Haha, thanks AgroBeats. Only a relative ear for me, I'm afraid.
well, not too shabby anyhow... I've always found pretty hard to grasp the exact harmony of lots of songs by ear...
Wait how do you play a sharp 5 and a natural 5???
#5 = b13
Oh wait like you play both at the same time???
Great !
Thanks, mate.
I bought a book of lead sheets and there all out of key wat do I do.......
Do you mean they are not in the key of the original song?
Tank's a lot.
Is salt good for your blood pressure? Not really but: take all lead sheets with a grain of salt.😅
How to Use a Lead Sheet
Video: "Step one: throw lead sheet in garbage"
Thanks a lot

What a douche bag

Makes sense.
I totally agree with your comment. A better title for this would be something like Beware of Fakebooks and Lead sheets.
So...this video does not actually teach how to use a lead sheet. WTF?
Change title to... What is not a lead sheet
I didn’t get any idea how to use a lead sheet. This video is not titled correctly!
Nice if would stop talking and demonstrate without showing off his prowess on the piano. I just want to tell him to shut up and show.
