When i started to learn to play guitar as a youngster back in the 1970’s lead sheets were instructions on how to play a particular song with vey little room for variation (which felt okay). But i love the idea of using lead sheets in piano as a “sand box tool”. 🙂
Wow, I wonder if your teachers gave you little room for variation as a learning tool? Many times, we impose strict guidelines on beginners in order to keep them from feeling overwhelmed and to teach them specific skills.
Awesome tutorial. It should be required of every new aspiring piano player : ) Lead sheets freed me from the chains of sheet music and took my playing to next level. Now instead of spending 1 month painstakingly trying to learn a song with somebody else's arrangement I learn a new song typical under 1 hour with my own pro-level sounding arrangement. But you gotta know your scales and chords as she has told you!
Finally, somebody. not doing just chords chords chords. I’ve been playing from lead sheets or fake books for 40 years using an arranger keyboard with great speakers or you can plug into a stereo and crank it up if you like. You get the basic music and then improvise. It’s all up to you. You can play anything any style like rock, blues country classical jazz show tunes etc.Looking forward to more from you.
Yes, lead sheets are so helpful for playing many songs! Chords are important, but they can't be the only thing you play because, well, we need melodies too!
Very rich content, as always, thank you ! Also great way to exercise chords. I have to watch chord master class 2 and then I will exercise chords using lead sheets. Great start to improvisation too! I feel like it's all starting to come together for me, it feels good!
