Oh man, I am SO excited for this! Currently working on a video series on my channel "restoring" an old 1995 Wing Gundam Zero, so that's what I'll be entering!
It's funny that you can use the very first MG for this contest. In fact, according to Dalong, you can use the first 8 MGs, from the first RX-78-2 all the way to Char's Gelgoog
I'm so gun damn excited! Im goin to Japan next week with my family and they thankfully agreed to do a lot of shopping... It would be my 4th kit ever tho, so we'll see how it goes.
Questions, because I am a literal simpleton: 1. Old school techniques (pla-plate/putty scratch building, duplicating pre-1996 parts with epoxy/urethane resins or vacuum forming) are all kosher and won't count on the 80/20 ratio? Just 3D print and modern aftermarket and/or salvaged parts get the ratio? 2. If we have a snap-built kit, without any glue/paint/modification, can we disassemble it down to the last part for the initial entry photo to prove its condition and use that?
Can’t say about the first question, but for the second, he’s allowed in the past for you to use a straight built kit with no modifications. So as long as you hadn’t worked on it at all past straight building it, he was fine with it
@@rockblockstudio Makes sense. It'd help expand the variety of kits people could use, instead of just whatever Bandai has reprinted recently. Most everyone has an untouched snap-built junker somewhere. But if not, I have an unbuilt pre-HG 0083 kit kicking around I could take a crack at
Interesting, of the old NG Wing kits, the run of the series ones and the LM Leo are there. The LM Taurus and NG G-Unit are 1997, and Endless Waltz ones are 1998 I keep meaning to do an upgrade conversion of the Tallgeese or Tallgeese 2 depending upon which I can get. This might be a reason to try
@@ZakuAurelius What about the G-unit kits? I know they're '97. I would also like to ask about the LM HG Mass-production Eva since a large chunk of the kit is based off the '96 Evas. Only ask since these are the oldest kits I have to my knowledge
@@ZakuAurelius I actually can’t find it among my collection lol. Looks like most of the joints and what not are the same from 96, just the new parts like the wings, head and a little of the armor and weapons are from 97. I ordered some older Zeta kits from 85 so I’ll just use those instead
...Yeah I'm not ready for this, I'm getting ready to do my first Gunpla kitbash, maybe in a year or two I'll be ready for entering into a contest. Thoughts on sculpting parts out of green stuff?
That’s difficult because it’s on the inside. So again consider the maximum 20% allowed visible noticeable additions from other kits. Think about how much of the new frame would show and/or add to the dynamics of the pose (compared to the limitations of the original kit). What might also be a good idea would be to consider brass rods, putty, and pla-plate for scratch building new joints to achieve a more dynamic pose.
@@ZakuAurelius hypothetically if i use something from modern kit to make the older main kit have that modern look - like for example older sd's having sdcs proportion and extra waist area, would that be within the criteria or no?
@@DegeneRated09yeah if your goal is to take an older kit and make it look modern through modification that’s all good! Just shouldn’t use a bunch of actual parts from modern kits
So are we being judged on how well we can take an old kit and make it look as nice as a modern kit or how well we can make a still recognizably old kit better. Sorry if I’m complicating a simple competition 😅
I love the contest idea, but the age range limit is going to make hunting down a kit a challenge. A few more years would have been nice. What set the cut off date at 1996?
It’s not an exact science as there are plenty of “challenging” kits made after ‘96. But 1997 is when the Endless Waltz kits came out and those are generally thought of as a marked improvement point
Wise guys hobbies had recently found a stash, almost a full warehouse of nothing but classics. Tons of unopened shipping boxes from the 80’s for Macross and Orgus and a ton of other old school franchises
@@seanswader7425Shame he raised his prices immediately after this video came out, pretty scummy. I bought my kit from him for $11with free shipping about 2 hours after this video came out now its $12 + $6 shipping. He was more than happy to have those 80s kits for dirt cheap until this contest.
@@seanswader7425 Which there's plenty of supply, Bandai still prints these kits and in Japan they're really easy to obtain. Usually eBay stores get tons from Japan and sell them for cheap or over price them. Galactic Toys every now and then gets some vintage kits and they have fair prices more often than not.
Not sure I want in on this one I started building Gunpla in 95. All my old kits are built and painted. So, I'd have to try a different series. Maybe go back to some old HG Eva kits or something. Really not sure about this one?!
Is there a list or website somewhere that has a full list of kits released before 1996? Im having a hard time trying to figure which kits are acceptable for this contest.
I have a old1/100 Agguguy kit that I purchased second hand. The torso, head and backpack were cut from th runners. May I enter tis kit? If not I understand and I will use something else.
I’m actually doing this right now. A coworker gave me a Master Grade grandaddy 1.0 that belonged to his brother before he passed away, and I was going to go all out and do it justice in his memory. My plan was to give it the Builder Parts hands since the classic Master Grade hands have serious nub marks from when the brother started the kit. The Builder Parts hands also play into the whole internal detail gimmick the 1.0 showcased with its opening panels, since with those hands you can take off the back covers and reveal the inner workings of the manipulators. I might also try to track down the upgrade parts set that gives it a head with a full inner frame and PG-style beam rifle with the hinged cover. I’ll also make some custom water slides to attribute the suit to the brother as if he were the pilot. I don’t know if it’ll be ready for the contest, as I’ll have to learn the skills to pull it all off. But I really want to do this justice for both my coworker and this sculpt, because the 1.0 MG really is a great look for the RX-78-2.
Just wanting to check, I've got an old Xabungle kit I was thinking would fit perfectly here that I bought secondhand, and while it's probably 95% complete, the original owner did snip out a few parts, put them in a Ziploc bag, then didn't touch the rest of it (to the point of putting the runner back into its bag and not opening the second bag at all lmao). Is that still alright to enter as long as I make it clear that I haven't touched it since buying it a year or so back?
I managed to snag a super cheap, '83 Prototype Dom kit off Mandarake and its already on the way so im REALLY looking forward to trying a world contest for once!
1996 year cutout is very tough.. simply because for a lot of people it's hard to find some kits whitin that range (at least for me). Would be much easier so see smth like 2000 - a lot more options to work with and the quality of engeneering is basically the same so the amount of work/skills would be not so different.. I'll pass then
Yes, they are pre 96 kits. I've have a 1/100 Agguguy that I want to use, but IDK if I can because it's a second hand kit and the previous owner cut the head and torso from the runners. the rest of the parts are untouched.
You got to remember the only way to advance as a build is to get out of you comfort zone. Will it be am amazing build? Maybe, maybe not. Regardless you can take pride in the fact that you tried.
Of course you announce the contest I was most interested in doing when I'm away from my kits and equipment and won't get to them until midway next year (international moving shenanigans)...../le sigh. Either way, I'm curious how others will deal with older kits so will keep an eye on this contest regardless.
Hey I have a 1/144 prototype dom that I semi started, the pieces are clipped out and about 3 parts have some puttying done on them and light sanding. No painting and I have a ton of work to get done on it. Was just wondering if i can still use this? If not no biggie, I've had it laying around for 3 years unfinished.
Aw man, wanted to join but not much stores/backlog sources to snag these kits 😥 Would love like maybe a 1999-2005 contest in the future I think that'd be more accessible, but Im quite excited what people will make out of this
