Just posted a new video that shows a brief update! You can also get snippets of updates on my Instagram @pstreetflowerfarm DAHLIAS ARE THE DREAM!! I’m so freaking excited for you 🥰♥️🥰♥️🥰
I am going to do this storage idea next year! Last year, I stored my dahlias in a paper bag with no filler. Last week, I looked at them and they are so shriveled up and dry. Luckily, they were only three tubers. I am going into my second year of gardening and I am still learning a lot!! This idea is amazing! I will try it this year. I got TONS of dahlia tubers as a gift and this is such a great idea! I would love to see your success and how you plant them. Thank you for your great advice :).
I didn’t the SAME thing last year and was so bummed when they were shriveled little strings!! Try this method. Mine were perfect 🙌🏾 I was so impressed and thankful! Happy growing - and I’ll bring you guys along on the next steps!
Thank you!!!!! I hadn’t heard of this before. I do appreciate this community of small farmers generously sharing their experiences and knowledge with us. I’m excited and terrified for this season. All the potential issues consume me, but getting to the work brings me back to the excitement for the season. If I were closer, I would be there in a jiffy to help you while you get through this giant project of building a house, running a farm and being a full time teacher, mother, wife, daughter and friend. Thanks again 🌸💗🌸💗🌸💗
Don’t get discouraged! Especially as a new grower we have so much to learn and mistakes are ok! We’ll learn so many valuable lessons that it’s worth the rough days. Thank you for your thoughtfulness of helping out this summer - I would take you up on it if you DID live closer😅 Although you’re not too far right? I remember you’re somewhere in WI, right! Thanks again for watching and coming along with me - I truly appreciate it 💕
I live in a cold place in Australia and I'm not going to dig up my dahlias ever again. I believe it really damages the tubers. It's how growers get tubers to sell, but I've concluded they can take a lot more cold in the ground than we think. I dug mine up last year and stored them by the book - I've lost several, many have grown poorly and some have got some disease. To top it off, i've noticed that local gardeners and even my local golf course gardeners do not dig them up - their plants are extremely healthy and loaded with flowers. Is this just something we do because everyone else does it ?😂 Check local gardens Tamara - it might not be necessary!
You know I think you may be onto something! We do get veeeeery cold too but we are also able to overwinter certain flowers sooooo you never know! May have to conduct an experiment this fall and talk to a few local growers 🥰🥰 ♥️♥️
I’m on the south coast of England. I agree that tubers can stand an air frost but the risk where I am is the wet. Very easy to lose tubers to rot in the ground. But if you can leave them in, it’s a LOT less work, both in spring and autumn.
@@janpapworth7956 I've heard that too Jan.. If you've got clay or some other poorly draining soil, I guess you'd either raise their beds or move them to a high spot in your garden.
Yep, I’m on clay! I grow on a sloping site, so I either plant at the bottom of the slope (nice and moist, but wet in winter) or further up (needs more watering, further away from the water source but better drained in winter). The eternal search for the sweet spot!
Would love to see how they are doing! I ordered new dahlias last night and am so excited to get them!

Good luck! I know I’m getting new stock in April which is too late but gardening is full of patience - don’t be afraid to dream about next year!

Can you show a picture of the sprout you cut off? Does it have any tuber on it?
No, I’ve never had to scrap off part of the tuber!
