So the ending of Gwenpool Strikes Back directly addressed a lot of my problems. If you'd like more info, I made a follow up video explaining how wrong I was. th-cam.com/video/dwGfDLkoZc4/w-d-xo.html
I was going to comment that you really need to see the last issue to appreciate the rest of the run. Which is something I usually don't like, but here it worked for me.
@@Hey-Its-Dingo i really hope so. i've already given up on strikes back. but if people say it gets better, i'll give it a shot. i'm just not buying her issues untill i get a good recomendation.
How to fix Gwenpool: Step 1: Force anyone who wants to write Gwenpool to read Christopher Hastings’ run Step 2: Repeat step one until they realize Gwen isn’t “millennial girl Deadpool” Step 3: Repeat step 2 until they REALLY get it Step 4: success
you're forgetting the part about the electric dog collar attached to every limb (and one other place that would be very unpleasant to have electrocuted) so as to make sure the morons get how to write her!
As a Deadpool fan: Gwenpool needs to go back to her original comic treatment. Deadpool works due to his insanity, so we don't know everything about him. Gwenpool works because she's from our world and has limited knowledge. (What she's read and experienced up to that point. Some parts of the past and future of explored in the comic she manipulates)
Aye, the real problem with her is that her meta knowledge has a timestamp, which isn’t really a detriment because she knows everything that’s important and timeless, but when writers have her make references to things like Endgame and any modern RL thing it doesn’t work. Oddly Slott seemed the best at this understanding when he wrote Silk because she’d been isolated since like 2003, so that’s where all her references were from.
Here's the funny thing. You're essentially experiencing the same emotional arc we OG Deadpool fans have had over years. Deadpool was really well written for a long time, and had a lot of character development before he became "Lolrandommemememememe"
I feel like Gwenpool got popular because, not only her book was well written, her art also looks very appealing with the manga-like style. She's really off when drawn in that regular marvel style.
@@tranngockha6562 I think those warm fuzzy vibes come from an inherent subtlety that only manga can portray. Surely there are over-the-top art styles like those of JoJo and Fist of the North Star, but most manga aren't like that. I think this art style makes Gwenpool look fun, wholesome and approachable, as opposed to the somewhat sexualized and rough Western art style. One thing you'll notice is that manga girls often wear very subtle make-up, meaning that it's there (because of course it is), you just don't ever see it clearly enough. Conspicuous make-up, say lipstick or even eye shadow, is only preserved for more mature and/or sexualized characters, which Gwen doesn't appear to be.
@NotAClanker it's "manga-like" that is, it's a comic book, but with a style clearly influenced by Manga. Also worth noting that there is actually not *one* "manga style".
I know right the other art style was so pleasing to the eyes. I have never been a fan of realistic art work personally and it just feels like they are stripping away more and more of a character that I loved.
Same here, it's why I had to drop $100 to buy a comic-accurate action figure of her from Mafex. Worth every penny I might add, and she scales perfectly with regular Marvel Legends.
The first mistake with Gwenpool's character was involving her with the Civil War 2 storyline. Comedic characters like her almost never benefit from being shoehorned into serious dramatic storylines.
Shifty 14 I’m not understanding your point. Are you saying they become something better than comedic characters when they get downgraded to exposition dumps in serious stories? A character’s tone is not relevant to the quality of the character
I didn't even know she was in it, I couldn't care enough to read civil war 2, the first one was really good, having a 2nd one just felt insulting to me
@@DizzyRaps1 yeah, she doesn’t even like Deadpool, it’s just when she asked someone to design a hero costume for her they mistook her for a Deadpool fan due to her last name.
Plot twist: This is all leading up to the Gwenpool Clone Saga where the original Gwenpool will be revealed to have been locked in a closet this whole time before bursting out and fighting her LOL Memes Gwenpool clone that Strikes Back actually stars. Because comics.
Gwenpool Strikes Back is supposedly 5 issues long, which means it would end around December, and we know that Marvel has a huge line-wide event coming in January 2020...
I was thinking something along those lines, or a deeper plot point involving mental health issues - because obviously anyone who could go all in on this "I'm living in a comic book" thing without losing their damn mind has to have some issues to begin with, right?
If she does stick to her original character in the end, this could end up being a parody of deadpool cause she thinks she needs to be him to be popular or relevant
It's funny that you say that run felt like watching Avatar: The Last Airbender since Gurihiru are the artists on many of the Avatar comics (which btw, are fantastic).
The last air bender ones are... legion of korra seems to be squandering their potential...kind of like the show itself , hopeful like the show they take the heads out of there asses
"I didn't like Gwenppol as a character, I just liked how she was written" … Surely it's the other way around? You like Gwenpool as a character, but hate crappy writers such as the ones who took her over? But yea semantics aside, look me like you're exactly right. I don't mind Deadpool but I hate clones of any characters. Gwenppol was special cause she was more than just a diversity quota stuck on an existing character, she was her own, interesting, and dam unique character that wanted to read about for the sake of reading about her and not... Deadpool but with tits, y'know?
@@Cell287 I know, I watched the video where he mentioned it, and she doesn't interest me either unless she's distinctly different from the original Deadpool.
Diversity quota of what? White female heroes are the norm in comics lol like majority of heroines in comics are white women. So don't come with the "diversity" . It's not.
@@darryljack6612 Marvel sent the C team work on Ms.Marvel, but they try to promote her in other medias. I have no idea where they want to go with Kamala...
Deadpool was never supposed to be a “LOOK AT ME!!! IM A LIVING MEME!!!” the books used to actually tell serious stories about a broken man using comedy as a coping mechanism.
Late to the party, but YES finally someone gets it, I typically have no problem when he is put in comedic roles but it starts to get obnoxious when they start using him as a meme and milking him for cash.
@@S0m3B0z0OnTheInternetwdym he's hardly a meme now, given his comics now up to this point gave him a more serious tone and humor at the same time. Plus memes aren't all bad, but I get it can become repetitive at times.
Same man, I loved her character in her own comics but not when she’s in the hand other writers. This is all very disappointing She’s actually one of the most relatable comic book characters I’ve ever come across. I was an unemployed loner living with my parents at the time I came across her books, making excuses for not finding work or turning in applications just so my parents left me alone to work on my own passion projects and day dreaming story scenarios. I related so much to her character that I went out my way and bought every issues of her first series (being the first time I’ve bought and owned a physical comic book I’ve ever), when I got a job, even though I’ve already read the stories online. I left them sealed and placed them on display in my room. I am very disappointed she’s being depicted this way and has turned into the character I also was worried she’d be.
I was also an unemployed loner living with my parents when I discovered Gwenpool. But hers was not the first comic book I ever physically purchased for myself. No, I have been purchasing comic books every week since 1972. And, regrettably, I am still unemployed, still a lonely loser, and I still live with my parents.
The movie Deadpool should be how the others are written. He's not too annoying, but a good mix of annoying and charming. And getting rid of the voices in his head or at least making it where we don't hear/see them is a good idea.
The voices were a plot point that got wrapped up ages ago. And yes, the movies are very well written, as a DP fan I wish all the comics were that well done.
@@vothbetilia4862that was a pretty good run, took a pretty nice step away from the "le epic memes lolzorz" and actually had some nice emotional depth, it just wasn't able to be explored as much as i would have liked since it got cancelled after 10 issues
It's interesting that the character herself got sad about this happening to (fuck I forgot his name) french guy in the original series. She must've known this would happen to her as well.
I'm glad someone finally said it. I would much rather have her live on remembered for an amazing short lived series than as a character that no writer cares enough about to write well.
@@christianhighii9882 while I agree that marvel does that way to often (though I think Red Goblin was a good idea) I think the real problem is that marvel hasn't cared about actually having a continuity that makes since in years meaning that if a writer doesn't care about the previous run on a book it can be completely ignored
Blake Foster Red Goblin was a cool idea because it was apart of Spider-Man’s stories, symbiotes and green goblin are a staple in Spiderman lore, so it makes sense. It’s when they start combining shit from other marvel super heroes is when things get stupid, like ghost rider punisher, venom hulk ect.
@@Gorypaladin346 as much as I agree that those combinations can be stupid they usually don't let them stay very long I imagine the symbiote hulk thing will only stay until the end of the event.
@@christianhighii9882 Weapon H was good though, one of Pak's better Hulk comics. It was really funny at times. Not to mention characters like Cosmic Ghost Rider which became really popular and had great series.
When Deadpool works, he works well. The issue is, you really need to know how to write someone like Deadpool to make him work. Specifically, if you're going for any notion of realistic storytelling, keep Deadpool far the fuck away.
You actually got me really into Gwenpool when you first talked about her. The art style really brought me in at first, but I ended up staying for the story. I do hope she doesn't become a copy of Deadpool. It's her unique way of interacting with her comic world that makes Gwen better than him. And hopefully more of her run will revolve around that more than what this current series.
Based on this video, I got the 25 issue run of The Unbelievable Gwenpool. It was amazing. It's nice to see an entire run of a comic that actually tells one on-going story. And that ending? Amazing. Thanks, Drake.
I've felt this way about Gwenpool since they brought her back. I was afraid that they would just turn her into Deadpool and unfortunately that fear became reality. Nothing against Deadpool of course, it's just... not Gwen.
I think Deadpool stories are at their best when they have deep stories. I just think he's not a great comic relief, but I do love when stories about him tackle themes like grief or abuse. He's a character that through the years went through hell, but he's so broken and morally twisted that his only ways to process all of it is making jokes and repeating the cycle of violence onto others. I think his older runs are very good reads to be honest
I think Drake is maybe trying to hard not to insult anybody. He doesn't sound entitled at all, yet he is worried he is. There's nothing entitled about voicing your opinion.
@@HiperPivociarz I like that he gives a shit and isn't intentionally trying to hurt anyone. He does a great job of giving his opinion and not making it seem like it's factual the way so many other reviewers seem to.
I love Gwenpool as a character, and I really, really enjoy the stories, her interactions with characters like Modok and Batroc. I’m also a fan of Deadpool, though, I’m in agreement with the ridiculous fourth wall breaking BS. It’s 2019, and I love new and interesting interpretations of characters, old and new.
Well, if Gwenpool was trying to become popular, it would makes sense to act like Deadpool, since he’s very popular. I agree that Gwen seems out-of-character in her new book, but it could be intentional: Gwen is choosing to act this way to become popular. That’s what I hope, anyway.
I am a fan of Deadpool, in fact I love him and he is one of my favorite characters, but yea I do agree with the personality change in Gwen pool strikes back, I loved the original series about her being us and a comic fan getting sucked into the comic world. Gwen having the same personality as Wade just seems off to me... I guess I just love the time where Wade and Gwen is constantly criticized Wade's books :v
I remember really enjoying GwenPools solo issue and origin however I never thought to take another look at the character again I just assumed she's been the same the entire time. It sad to see how much this character change
I loved Reality Bending Gwenpool and how she deals with existential crisis of being a real person trapped in this world of superheros she only read about in the past. I would actually like a series where Gwenpool faces Memepool, a split personality of Gwen manifested because of her continued existence in the comic world that becomes a real person, but since the comic world is all she knows, she becomes a Reskinned Deadpool. Memepool could then become Gwen's arch nemesis as Gwen continues to struggle to find her place in this new world while Memepool has already become a real Super "hero." That storyline could lead to a return to form for the character while also creating an interesting villain-ish person for Gwen to face in the future. I just thought this off the top of my head and wanted to share. I had the same experience with Gwenpool and I still see great things from the series in the future. It just needs the right story
Hope she goes back to being herself not a female wade. One is more then enough and usually to over the top. Liked deadpool 2 where 1 was great and 2 they threw everything they could in.
How to fix gwenpool from what I know: Make her insecure and scared to fade. Make this whole chasing deadpool thing be something like: "I am trying to be deadpool to be myself." Only to come across Lady Deadpool and her going: "This is my future..is this waht I want? A sexier version of lady deadpool that resembles Peter Parker's dead ex girlfriend?" She then just goes to the gap and thinks for a moment. "If I use this power.. people will hate me... it's my abillity but it solves too much problems and makes stories boring.. I can't do that." Then she finds resolution by looking back at older comics and saw how every hero had a goofy, bad moment or copying another hero to get success and it comes down to her saying: "Yea.. just a slump. Every great hero has those! A moment of trying to be hip like others but in the end.. we find our true selves or a new self that is much better." She returns from the Gap and walks over to wade going: "Okay this been fun and all but I had a moment of self discovery. You are a good teacher but in the end...you are too good of one and you should be you! And I should be me." With Deadpool just waving it off and going: "Eh you don't need to come with that mushy stuff when you can: ....CLIMB MT CHIMICHANGA!" Gwen walks off and let's Wade do his silly bit: "Yea you have fun there Wade!" She finally says the last line: "My power.. my power is just being me and that's all I need to improve." Resolution.. explains why Gwenpool was going through these "Deadpool" moments. It fixes her. And it shows some growth as well as getting her own growth in the future. It also explains why she doesn't use her reality altering powers. So what would her next step be? Find the next epic adventure to stay relevant!
I think you misunderstood the character a lot, she actually doesn't want to be Deadpool or even a hero, she's more like a person playing an RPG in a self-aware way, she's just along for the ride and adventure. Angst is really not in the job description.
Hope something like that happens, was a tad disappointed with the new series but if it culminates to that I'll be happy as Gwen is basically doing the:let's try everything that was popular to get noticed
Wade: "I'm glad you figured that out. Hold on to that as long as you can. This Deadpool's had to get his memories erased to return him to the Deadpool you know. Speaking of which, I am not." Gwen: "What do you mean?" Wade: "I came from a universe that-you what? It's easier to show you. Mind taking me back to that Comic Subspace of yours?" Gwen: "Sure, why?" Wade: Trust me. (They return to The Gap) Wade: Look to your right. (Gwen sees a medium sized bar in the distance) Gwen: "Was that always there?" Wade: "Sort of. This is the space between comics. That bar is a nexus point between realities. I'm not talking just our realities, I mean Marvel, DC, you name it. It's a meeting point for both the major companies. There's good people in there." (They see a guy wearing a hat, trench coat, and a mask, one that changes shape.) Wade: "That's a great guy, right there. As good as, if not better than Cable. A little stuck in his ways, but a good friend, all the same." Gwen: "Is that Shazam?" Wade: "The original. He's as good as they say he is. It's good you saw your flaws." Gwen: "Who exactly ARE you?" Wade: "Just some random guy. I made some mistakes, and risked my bacon to fix them."
@@DayOldMeat Well a lil bit of Angst can deepen her, but I feel like you have a very fair point. I am not 100% knowledgable on GwenPool so I can agree with you on this. Be glad I am not a writer then ;) But I feel like that's how I would fix it. Nothing for real though :O Maybe you will write a better Gwenpool then I would so go with it :) Might have to change it to "She's just going along with Deadpool cause it brings the most adventures?" Otherwise excuse me for doing it wrong :D
I totally agree, and I highly suggest reading the original run of Deadpool, I hate what he's become because I LOVED that run, he got super serious and SUPER dark sometimes. No character with the ability to break the fourth wall can survive long, they'll inevitably either become a joke (Deadpool/Gwenpool) or just kinda, stop breaking the fourth wall.(She-Hulk)
Tbh I find most comedic characters obnoxious, and find them “likable” when they are in their most serious vulnerable moments, you know... something that makes me go “hey, I actually believe this person exists in real life” that’s why I enjoy gwenpool so much.... until they screw up her character
SPOILERS! Apparently all that stupid crap Gwenpool did was for a reason, according to the last issue of this new miniseries. I’m happy for that and I’m hopeful future titles featuring my favorite non-Spider based Marvel character has better books in the future. The original series’s still better though.
@@CMan-x7k Comic Drake watched the Comicstorian video and recorded this quick reply. This video is about eight minutes long, and it was posted eight minutes after Comicstorian’s video. My distinguished colleague has stated the truth. It is no coincidence.
Looks like someone hasn't actually read the book... Yeah, as some fellow said above basically the lady who made thier costume mistook her name as her wanting a costume similar to Deadpool, and she just kept the name. You really should read the Unbelievable Gwenpool series (aka the one by hastings) it's really good
It feels like the new series was written by someone who saw Gwenpool, thought "oh, pink girl Deadpool" and wrote a Deadpool story that is loosely based on the Wikipedia page for Gwenpool. I love the character, but there's so much backwards progress and mischaracterization (ie- how she's just so thirsty, compared to how she was awkward about her crushes in the original run) in the new series. It just feels like Marvel doesn't understand what people liked about her. All that said, I'd love to see the Gwenpool from the end of the Unbelievable Gwenpool just kind of retcon her out like with Evil-Future-Gwenpool.
Something I like about her is that like a lot of other iconic characters she has an art style that feels essential to her in the American comic landscape.
If Gwenpool appears in the MCU, I wonder if they’ll hire an actress with the name “Gwen” and make her meet with Kevin Feigi until she was somehow transported to the MCU. I would love that.
if they do, yeah they gotta make her META as hell, like you said have the actress name actually be Gwen and have her interview Kevin about a up coming movie, make it real normal and then something happens(multiverse explosion). No update until suddenly she has a scene in a show or something (maybe a one-shot style thing) of Gwen waking up being saved by an avenger/spiderman/defender(depends on how long they wait) imagine her powers in a tv/movie universe it would be like Wandavision with Agatha
Hopefully she is introduced in either Ms. Marvel or She Hulk, but if I'm not mistaken, the voice actor for Howard the Duck (Disney+ What if ?...) said that he would want Gwenpool to make an appearance in What if Season 2. My call would be to have her mentioned as Kamala Khan's "crazy friend" during one of the episodes (assuming she is introduced in Ms. Marvel), and then finally be introduced in the post credits scene, where she notices something is off and comes to the realisation that she is in a post credits scene. She then realises that if she is in a post credits scene, she will be returning with a bigger role (and then remembers about the Leader from the Incredible Hulk). I seriously believe that she could do well in the MCU (either as a movie or a series). She could have a similar story as the comics, with her starting out by doing crazy stuff before realising that her screen time is limited, and then she spends the rest of her time trying to find a way to set up a sequel/season 2 or to team up with a bigger team, with none of her plans working out, and still reach a wholesome ending. The best actress I could think of to portray her is probably the girl who played "Hit-girl" from Kick Ass (I can't remember her name)
I also want to point out that besides being eye candy, which is not bad, Gwenpool was kind of a self-insert character in the Universe and criticizing the Universe in a fanfiction kind of way. Now that the writers ran out of material to write about, they literally have to write her like Deadpool because they have nothing else to write about.
The end of Gwen pool shows her future is horrible and her peak was in the past Past Gwen choose to not continue in that path, and that was fine for some time... But that decision wasn't her's to make, marvel are the only ones who choose
@@Gilhelmi which deadpool? The memey deadpool who is only skin deep? Or the real deadpool who is suicidal and uses humor to make himself happy that most people dom6know or don't care to know?
a big thing about Gwenpool thay I like is that she's genuinely just kinda happy and loves having fun while caring about others, her whole thing near the end was that she didn't want to become super heartless and enjoy messing with the characters of comic's, she has alot of empathy and her artstyle refelects her bubbly personality
I agree with you about Deadpool & how it depends on the writers. I feel it's the same with alot of fictional characters in comics especially Batman & Superman. Sometimes it feels like DC forgets Batman is a human being & make out to be indestructible lol.
the truth is, how you describe hating pn things is how everyone who hates on things feels. no one knows that they're hating, they just think they're fighting for what they love, i've certainly been there.
Deadpool's a hard character to get into because at first he kinda just seems like, "that goofy guy who does the memes", but I assure you he's way more than that. I'd recommend: Deadpool: the good the bad & the ugly(or just all of Gerry Duggan's run), Joe Kelly's og run, Spider-Man/Deadpool, Uncanny X-Force, and Thunderbolts(2012 - 2014) to fully get what he's about.
I never read Gwenpool, but did love that she has all the info in comics so I love that you made this so that I know what to avoid and what to read. The thing that makes keeps me interested is if Gwenpool becomes popular enough she would know it and that could be fun to read. At least I think that's how it works.
Drake I love you man and I’m super glad you made this video. TLDR This is how criticism should be done. I think it’s great that you prefer to focus on the positives and build up rather than criticise and tear down, I think that’s a brilliant mindset to have and the world would be better if more people followed it. But that’s also why I’m so glad you made this video, you saw something you really like and are passionate about going in a direction you didn’t like and felt wasn’t the best outcome, and decided to talk about it. But unlike most “criticism” and hate culture you didn’t just slam and diss on it, you *politely* discussed and analysed what you loved about the old, what you didn’t like about the new, and why you felt this departure was mostly negative, providing evidence for each. Ontop of that you listed your personal biases and how this video may come off to others, especially those with opposing opinions, which is great because it helps others empathise with where you’re coming from or respectfully disagree with your opinions since they may be unable to relate and feel your critique, but may still be able to see how something could affect you. I could probably analyse this even more and list multiple other merits of this video but I’ll leave with this. This is a brilliant example of how to critique and if more people followed it I think a lot more issues would be properly addressed if hate culture and “criticism” was done like this. The content creators would probably feel a lot better, and therefore probably be in a better situation to respond to the issue, since they’re not just having unbridled rage and insults hurled at them. The fanbase would be more hospitable since even though they may be split or facing an issue they’d less likely start ripping each other to shreads but rather have polite thoughtful discussion. Lastly the issue would probably be taken more seriously all around and not devolve into if you dislike X your a hater and if you like X your a fanboy. Great vid man, looking forward to the next.
Best case scenario, she realises at a point how she's now being so deadpool-y, and then attempts to fix stuff up? This all being an overly long set-up could be somewhat potentially interesting?
Sean Pace I really like Harleen. It has clever writing and a pretty artdesgin, except for the Joker. I am not a big fan of drawing or portraying Joker as Handsome or pretty. But other than that a nice Miniseries.
I kinda hope the Ultimate Marvel Graphic Novel Collection (with seemingly no end) gets this Gwenpool series that you love so much. So far majority of the collection is Avengers, Spider-Man, X-Men...with more Avengers.
Didn't Gwen and Wade absolutely hate each other when they met in Gwen's initial run? This is the only comic book I've read the whole run for and it hurts to see the injustice to her character
Gwenpool's 1st solo series: Best Marvel character, I have never loved a Marvel character as much as Gwenpool Gwenpool Strikes Back: THAT'S NOT MY GWENPOOL!
I've been out of comics for a while now... But, this sounds awesome! Also, the ATLA bit sold me on this. Note for Google and my FBI agent: if you want me to buy something, compare it to the writing and energy of Avatar the Last Airbender.
I suggest The Unbelievable Gwenpool from Hastings and Gurihiru. Their art is pretty reminiscent of ATLA, and actually the same artists drew the ATLA comics! Highly recommend this title ^^ nothing else tho. Not loving her new mini series at all :\
Gwenpool is my favourite comic book character in the marvel universe, I love the hell out of the unbelievable Gwenpool run, so seeing her degraded to a Deadpool clone in Gwenpool strikes back (which I had high hopes for) is honestly really upsetting- I just hope this run improves because I am honestly losing interest.

I just got into this comic like a week ago cause you mentioned it in a video before and I was so excited to see that you just made another video about it.
Oh my god a Gwenpool video XD. I randomly stumbled on to her character and did not regret buying that first omnibus issue 1. I could ramble about how the character is one of the two favorite new characters I liked when they came out, the other being Nadia (the unstoppable wasp), but I would hate to see her become Deadpool. He is already good at being him, I want Gwen to be herself, though West Coast Avengers didn't really utilize her character it was nice to see her around. I had no idea that she was back to her solo outings, and only to find out she is Deadpool. God ... Hopefully she rebounds back to that wonderful girl of the Hastings run. Thanks for making this video Drake. More people need to talk about Gwenpool!
Dude, I agree with you 100%. Gwenpool is my all time favorite comic character. Her original run was one of the first comics series' I read from start to finish and adored every single page of it. And to see her new book mishandling her so much is REALLY depressing to me. I do hope it gets better though and she gets a return to form later.
100% in agreement with you man. Her initial series was my number one and I fell in love with Gwen. Her being a Wade protege killed the character for me. Reminds me of when Miles Morales was basically black Peter Parker for years until Spider-Verse changed that last December
Haven’t read any comics in quite a while, this video genuinely made me want to read Gwenpool. Because I too had the misconception that she was just girly deadpool, I just liked the design and that was it. So thanks Drake, thanks.
I can't confirm that Deadpool breaks a lot the fourth wall in his comics cause i don't have them| didn't buy them BUT in his movies, Wade don't do it too much! It's funny and entertaining every time he does it, i like it :D My favorite moment is the '' A fourth wall joke in a fourth wall? '' from the first movie. It was hilarious just see him being amazed by that! The '' Well, that's lazy writing! '' line is great as well. Always makes me laugh!
Man I loved her series. It was cool how they started with the hook and really grew from that. The people that really got that character did it well. The lazy ones just tried to make her a female Deadpool.
Niiiiiiiice. I just decided to read the Gwenpool times and some of her appearances. Whimsical character, would make a great animated series of they could maintain the atmosphere of the book.
I hope I'm not the only one out there who like her simply because of her more humanly, relatable character(especially under her mask too) over her "hyper-ness" which, if exaggerated, instantly ruins her for me. I'm upset that basically no other writers has really captured her maturity as a heroine and generally as a person beyond making her the thing I absolutely hate, a Deadpool clone. But hey, if this one goes to shit, we can always return to the original 25 issues, where our true beloved Gwen Poole lies. It's completely our choices to whether or not accept spin offs' canonicity. Oh yeah, personally I think Gurihiru are the only people who can actually make her look super cute with her mask on. Other artists didn't really make it work for me.
Hey drake,I just anted to say that you're video on gwenpool inspired me to pick it up,I've always loved gurihurus art but I haven't actually read in in comics (only in comic covers)so I'm REAL EXCITED so...THANKS!
I guess there could be a mysterious hand of Marvel guiding Gwenpool into just being another female Deadpool, and I'd imagine that is for some kind of reason made apparent by collected information... but I feel like her next comic or even this one can always go back in the same direction as her last one (especially if the plot is being made self-aware that she is just turning into a copy of Deadpool)
So the ending of Gwenpool Strikes Back directly addressed a lot of my problems. If you'd like more info, I made a follow up video explaining how wrong I was. th-cam.com/video/dwGfDLkoZc4/w-d-xo.html

How to fix Gwenpool:
Step 1: Force anyone who wants to write Gwenpool to read Christopher Hastings’ run
Step 2: Repeat step one until they realize Gwen isn’t “millennial girl Deadpool”
Step 3: Repeat step 2 until they REALLY get it
Step 4: success
That's just reading with extra steps
you're forgetting the part about the electric dog collar attached to every limb (and one other place that would be very unpleasant to have electrocuted) so as to make sure the morons get how to write her!
Step 5: fire them if they don't get it.
Maybe have them also read dr.mcninja, gives you a bit of a look into hasting's mind and reality warping ideas, also how to do absurdist humor right.

As a Deadpool fan:
Gwenpool needs to go back to her original comic treatment. Deadpool works due to his insanity, so we don't know everything about him. Gwenpool works because she's from our world and has limited knowledge. (What she's read and experienced up to that point. Some parts of the past and future of explored in the comic she manipulates)
Boggle dot, am I right?

Her comic has that warm fuzzy Avatar the last airbender vibes. I love it.
It's away a pleasant trip going through the story.
@@van-hieuvo8208 Yeah, the artstyle make her look like Ty Lee from avatar. Cute, friendly and fun.

@NotAClanker it's "manga-like" that is, it's a comic book, but with a style clearly influenced by Manga.
Also worth noting that there is actually not *one* "manga style".

True, same goes with Ms marvel's new costume.
Agreed, the pink shading on her face around her eyes made her so cute, but part of that was lost in the recent series.
I know right the other art style was so pleasing to the eyes. I have never been a fan of realistic art work personally and it just feels like they are stripping away more and more of a character that I loved.
Same here, it's why I had to drop $100 to buy a comic-accurate action figure of her from Mafex.

Memepool could then become Gwen's arch nemesis as Gwen continues to struggle to find her place in this new world while Memepool has already become a real Super "hero."
That storyline could lead to a return to form for the character while also creating an interesting villain-ish person for Gwen to face in the future. How to fix gwenpool from what I know:
Make her insecure and scared to fade. Make this whole chasing deadpool thing be something like:
"I am trying to be deadpool to be myself."
Only to come across Lady Deadpool and her going: "This is my future..is this waht I want? A sexier version of lady deadpool that resembles Peter Parker's dead ex girlfriend?"
She then just goes to the gap and thinks for a moment.
"If I use this power.. people will hate me... it's my abillity but it solves too much problems and makes stories boring.. I can't do that."
Then she finds resolution by looking back at older comics and saw how every hero had a goofy, bad moment or copying another hero to get success and it comes down to her saying:
"Yea.. just a slump. Every great hero has those! A moment of trying to be hip like others but in the end.. we find our true selves or a new self that is much better."
She returns from the Gap and walks over to wade going:
"Okay this been fun and all but I had a moment of self discovery. You are a good teacher but in the end...you are too good of one and you should be you! And I should be me."
With Deadpool just waving it off and going: "Eh you don't need to come with that mushy stuff when you can: ....CLIMB MT CHIMICHANGA!"
Gwen walks off and let's Wade do his silly bit: "Yea you have fun there Wade!"
She finally says the last line: "My power.. my power is just being me and that's all I need to improve."
Resolution.. explains why Gwenpool was going through these "Deadpool" moments.
Speaking of which, I am not."
Gwen: "What do you mean?"
Wade: "I came from a universe that-you what? It's easier to show you. Mind taking me back to that Comic Subspace of yours?"
Gwen: "Sure, why?"
Wade: Trust me.
(They return to The Gap)
Wade: Look to your right.
(Gwen sees a medium sized bar in the distance)
Gwen: "Was that always there?"
Wade: "Sort of. This is the space between comics. That bar is a nexus point between realities. I'm not talking just our realities, I mean Marvel, DC, you name it. It's a meeting point for both the major companies. There's good people in there."
(They see a guy wearing a hat, trench coat, and a mask, one that changes shape.)
Wade: "That's a great guy, right there. As good as, if not better than Cable. A little stuck in his ways, but a good friend, all the same."
Gwen: "Is that Shazam?"
Wade: "The original. He's as good as they say he is. It's good you saw your flaws."

So essentially she went from a Mel Brooks style parody, to a Meet the Spartant style parody? Gotcha!
In other words, from genius to pitiful.
No update until suddenly she has a scene in a show or something (maybe a one-shot style thing) of Gwen waking up being saved by an avenger/spiderman/defender(depends on how long they wait)
imagine her powers in a tv/movie universe it would be like Wandavision with Agatha
I don't know why but that "thanks I hate it" caught me off-guard. I nearly lost my breath laughing.

I agree with you about Deadpool & how it depends on the writers. I feel it's the same with alot of fictional characters in comics especially Batman & Superman. Sometimes it feels like DC forgets Batman is a human being & make out to be indestructible lol.
She still hasn’t met Eye-Scream, the greatest Mutant ever
I hope there’s a reference there at least, like “who are you?”
Gavin Brown I won’t be surprised if her only knowledge on him are from poorly made top 10 lists of worst superpowers
The skylander?
Iam Notarobot no the guy that appeared in one issue got frozen alive and then hasn’t appeared or mentioned in any comic since
the truth is, how you describe hating pn things is how everyone who hates on things feels. no one knows that they're hating, they just think they're fighting for what they love, i've certainly been there.

Weirdly dark turn.
"The world is a shallow void of mindless pale bugs and that's why I don't mind DeadPool fans."
Just the scans of the art alone have sold me on that initial gwenpool book. I love this artstyle so much
Deadpool's a hard character to get into because at first he kinda just seems like, "that goofy guy who does the memes", but I assure you he's way more than that. I'd recommend: Deadpool: the good the bad & the ugly(or just all of Gerry Duggan's run), Joe Kelly's og run, Spider-Man/Deadpool, Uncanny X-Force, and Thunderbolts(2012 - 2014) to fully get what he's about.
Gerry Duggan run is excellent as well. I wouldn't really recommend Most of the Spider-Man/ Deadpool run because it went back to LOL Maymay Deadpool.
@@deadypendergrass3435 the first S-M/DP arc was good though.
Filler stuff... not so good.
@@frightening_volleyball1231 That is what I meant to say. The first I say 20 issues were good
@@deadypendergrass3435 k, dawg
I never read Gwenpool, but did love that she has all the info in comics so I love that you made this so that I know what to avoid and what to read.
The thing that makes keeps me interested is if Gwenpool becomes popular enough she would know it and that could be fun to read.
At least I think that's how it works.
I recommend The Unbelievable Gwenpool. A lot of character development and emotional moments in that series that makes me appreciate Gwen.
Sounds like me and the new Harley Quinn.
I sure do miss Harley, but she's not the same anymore. :/
The villain harley
Harleen may be worth checking out.
SpikeStarkey I mean, I like her better now than when she was just arm candy for Joker to beat up on
Sean Pace I really like Harleen.
Yeah they were at eachothers throats
Amazing video. Now I know that I like a very specific run, not the other ones
Gwenpool's 1st solo series: Best Marvel character, I have never loved a Marvel character as much as Gwenpool
Gwenpool Strikes Back: THAT'S NOT MY GWENPOOL!
Highly recommend this title ^^
nothing else tho. Not loving her new mini series at all :\
Gwenpool is my favourite comic book character in the marvel universe, I love the hell out of the unbelievable Gwenpool run, so seeing her degraded to a Deadpool clone in Gwenpool strikes back (which I had high hopes for) is honestly really upsetting- I just hope this run improves because I am honestly losing interest.
all the Deadpool panels you complained about where from the Daniel Way run, and he doesn't understand Deadpool at all
Daniel Way can only write "lol so random" humor
Deadpool 2012 by Posehn & Duggan is AMAZING. they really get the character and really do him justice
you can really tell that they sat down and thought intensely about the entire run before the first issue was penned
Gwenpoole idea imagine if she tries to break the fourth wall like Deadpool except stares away from the viewer because she doesn't know where the viewer is
I just got into this comic like a week ago cause you mentioned it in a video before and I was so excited to see that you just made another video about it.
I liked gewnpool cause it was more like "okay let's been real here, you'd do the exact same thing if you were here" and I believe it
Oh my god a Gwenpool video XD.
When the character doesn't become an Satirical Anime Character anymore...
You know something was off
Dude, I agree with you 100%. Gwenpool is my all time favorite comic character. Her original run was one of the first comics series' I read from start to finish and adored every single page of it. And to see her new book mishandling her so much is REALLY depressing to me. I do hope it gets better though and she gets a return to form later.
Deadpool is one of your least favorite characters of all time? Oh man, that explains SO much.
100% in agreement with you man. Her initial series was my number one and I fell in love with Gwen. Her being a Wade protege killed the character for me. Reminds me of when Miles Morales was basically black Peter Parker for years until Spider-Verse changed that last December
1:05 - 1:11
I’m really glad they changed the art style
3:17 also that’s ugly
Haven’t read any comics in quite a while, this video genuinely made me want to read Gwenpool. Because I too had the misconception that she was just girly deadpool, I just liked the design and that was it. So thanks Drake, thanks.
When you really think about it Gwenpool is just Marvels take on an isekai
2:22
Yup...There's definitely something sussy here
Their art from Power Pack was the reason why I wanted to be a good artist and author.
I'm surprised most people talking about Christopher Hastings don't even mention his awesome webcomic The Adventures of Doctor McNinja.
