  • Episode 306 features a discussion with astrologer Claire Moon about the process of making the transition into practicing astrology professionally, and some considerations for becoming a full-time astrologer.
Over the past few years Claire has made the transition to practicing astrology full-time and making that her primary career, and so we sat down to discuss what that has been like and talk about some things people should think about if they are considering making that transition.
Parts of the discussion also centered around what it is like to be a normal person who practices astrology, and how it can be kind of tricky sometimes interacting with people or institutions in your life who may view that as a weird thing.

I am interested in knowing how much I could charge to start with, the propects of consultations numbers (week, month) and how are the best ways and styles of promoting myself. I guess these questions have a unique asnwer to my own situation other than general, so that I don't think you would asnwer them by doing a podcast or maybe if you do that won't be so straight forward. Thanks.

Please record your book as an audiobook! For myself, with the availability of podcasts like yours in recent years, (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) I've attuned my brain gradually more towards listening to material while commuting to work, etc and then, later (esp. if for learning purposes), re-listening while taking notes. And, I'm sure it's a ton of work, but it would be fantastic if you narrated it yourself. You have a great speaking voice! Thanks to you both for an amazing episode 💙

@Renee M This is such a great question and I'm glad to see the community engaging with these topics more. For anyone else who is reading and might be interested in how I approach this:
First things first: know what your limitations and strengths/weaknesses are as a consulting astrologer. Be honest with yourself and your client.
If the client seems like they are in an ok headspace to receive such a recommendation, I will gently just name or identify that which I am unqualified to pursue. For instance, if something comes up that could benefit from a therapist, I say "This is such an important point/topic/situation to explore, but I would be out of my lane going deeper with it. I think you might benefit from seeing someone specifically trained in counseling who could better explore this further with you." Or something like that. I think that approach makes it plain that it's me that has the limitation, and that they aren't wrong for bringing that topic up. I don't want to give the impression that just because I'm not qualified to go there, that it is still super important for the client to pursue.
We need to be sensitive to the person, timing, their mood, client/provider rapport at the moment, and words we use to describe things. I try to mirror the language my clients use, as even diagnosis words like "depression" and "therapy" can trigger folks into defensiveness because those words are so stigmatized.

  • @lisaparis684
    @lisaparis684 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Take the leap! After 18 years, I've noted some things about clients (not initially known to me personally), especially returning ones:
I have strong connections between my chart and theirs; they arrive in "threes" or more with something in their charts I am currently studying in depth; and - as the years go on, and I personally experience more Jupiter, Saturn and outer planet transits - I have more concrete experience/advice to share with clients who are struggling with those same transits. I can honestly tell them they're going to be fine and give suggestions for coping without groping.
If you know you are meant to astrologize, there are people destined and waiting to meet you and only you. YOU are THEIR astrologer, yay!

I'm exploring how much of astrology to bring into my tarot practice. It's still in the early stages but I'm finding myself completely drawn into merging astrology into my tarot practice.
I've been self-employed for about 25 yrs. with a background in photo production.
I'm truly grateful to apply the business side of self employment into building clients and knowing the best investments to make.
Though, I will see how much of this I will expand into for a steady business.
There are hundreds of spiritual practitioners and astrologers who are working Full Time and only a small percentage get the recognition for their efforts.
I do appreciate hearing the experience those have had while transitioning into Astrology, especially coming from a different career background.

One of the most exciting things that happened to me was when a psychiatrist asked me for insights as to his chart. I remember when I added "astrology" to my facebook profile where previous colleagues and students from the Academia could see it I felt completely naked. It was the hardest closet to come out of but it paid off. Always exciting to see sciency people in this field.
I second that about the signs houses and planets series of the cast. I believe that is how I got up here too and it was a next phase of deepening my commitment to astrology.
As to the word "coming out as" - well hiding your identity and passion, whichever it is can cause poor ability to set boundaries in your entire life. So I would not be so dismissive of any closet even if it is not lgbtq closet. It is still fear of losing friends, jobs, connections and reputation as a scientist or a thinker. It is still psychological struggle that affects your health and wellbeing. The words "coming out as" describe exactly the feeling and experience of exposing yourself as an astrologer. This does not take anything away from lgbtq struggle. We are not in competition over who is struggling more, we are aiming to create an open discourse and heal.

I also come from a scientific (neuroscience) background & focus, actually will start a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and work with stem cells later this year. Having studied Hellenistic for a year and a half through Astrology Podcast and Acyuta-bhava Das courses, I recently started doing pay-what-you-want birth chart readings, to begin collecting that other 50% of learning. I have worked as a support worker in the community, and am about to finish a year-long counselling skills course, which has been super helpful to learn how to hold space and thread more difficult symbols gently. I do want to be the Renaissance-person for sure. Sag rising + Mercury and Sun in Virgo = I want to be the jack of all trades, master of all! haha x
I also love seeing many connections with science and astrology - they share the Hermetic nature, the sense of there being the inner logic, the fact that by learning about the ingredients and possible mechanisms on one level, you learn something about the other layers of the whole.
I do use a pseudonym - Medis - it means 'Tree' in Lithuanian, my mother tongue. I wouldn't mind changing my actual name to Medis, so I suppose it works out with the existential conundrum of juggling two different identities. Also, I practice as an artist and Medis is primarily for my creative works, so tagging the astrology feels organic and also, coincidentally, socially acceptable - if anyone asks, I study the ancient philosophies and astrological systems and things like Tarot for artistic performances and inspiration x

I wish I had taken Astrology in high school when we could have voted it in as an elective. But I didn’t.
Astrology should be taught as something that everyone should practice. But not everyone has the ability to get beyond the social bias perpetrators that want it kept so secret.
I have found that when one learns how to read the chart and how to look it up in the available books one can read enough to answer the questions one wants answered. After forty years of mentioning it most people wouldn’t do the work if their life depended on it.
I think teaching people how to read their own charts is the most important thing anyone can do.

I appreciate your good work Chris. A new episode on a Hellenistic Astrology topic would be great. Maybe a topic that is more neglected.

This was fun, I just picked a random shorter episode to pass some time and really enjoyed it while finding some of it interesting in terms of new.
Possibly a subconscious choice because I’m unconsciously wondering why my mind is making me study astrology when I don’t want to be an astrologer.
Interesting parts: I’m sort of finding I’m reaching that “narrow down” stage where I’m finding specific interests while also surprised stigmas exist with astrology still. I have friends in Portland that went heavy into activism and social injustice to the deep end realm where a friend who’s a psychiatrist moved to Portland (her partner was hired at the university of Portland) relocating from San Fran (she’s lived in many states) where she said it’s because oregon is one of the most racist and bigoted states in the union. It’s easy to mistake an environment for the entire world. Related….
Much of what was stated I wouldn’t have issues with having a gemini MC, staying in one realm would drive me insane while the focus has been Leo r Mercury 12th related to zodiacal release. 20 plus years of that is like going on vacation and finding the house has burned down, I’ve been very detached and remote. I’ve been more about life simplification running wild with that Mercury not knowing what’s up in very gemini fashion. With what was discussed about anxiety, imagine going from that focus to an 11th cancer Jupiter; unbelievably disorienting where it’ll take a while to get footing so I probably shouldn’t be dismissive where astrology isn’t moving towards some form of getting into actual astrology of some sort. That 12th haze is still lingering.
I’m the type where a friend would ask an astrological question where I may not actually respond to it for 3 years. 😆 I just did that today so it’s hard for me to imagine actually engaging in any type of astrological readings. I’ve also been mildly opposed to too much direct contact with others because of said life simplification. I’ve been more engaged in more chaotic studying where “normal” is too overwhelming. Once the “John was out with Mary and Gary said this then Lisa said that then left without paying the bill where Jeremy was rude to …” too much drama.
Oddly, the weirder parts of astrology are where I’m finding the most interest where practical application may take a while. I’ve pushed back some astrologers (in terms of studying) for a brief period because (coincidentally) I want to stay more focused as opposed to the gemini period where it was all over the place. Due to what was mixed with astrology (Jung, watts, various other philosophers and so on) it’ll likely be mythic and my biggest draw is Tarnas be it richard and/or Becca while it’s likely I may go off in interest in a really weird angle. An issue with Jungian and generally academic approaches isn’t a flaw, it’s an outward perception where it can make these subjects seem overly intellectual (as if you have to be incredibly sophisticated to understand something) when, really, it’s just about everyday experiences we all have. Jung can seem esoteric and mystical describing mystical rituals; it’s just the language and wording. Astrology can have the same issue. Something stated also, when others said I had “prophetic dreams” I’d make fun of it, but I did find when discussing it I’d break it all down by what external contents shaped that internal dream regardless of anything prophetic.
One dream, riots and an spreading respiratory disease where the sick “zombies” just wanted left alone being attacked by healthy people believing they were being attacked as self fulfilling prophecy with it being instigated by a huge arachnid hiding in the shadows in a corner under the stairs wearing safety padding and a face shield helmet/mask (it’s still funny today)… the zombie archetype in movies were just starting, dawn of the dead remake was released. The disease, the original Cabin Fever was released a couple years earlier where a person caught a common virus where college kids (instead of helping them) panicked beating, shooting, and catching the poor guy on fire getting everyone killed instead of being calm and driving him to the hospital. The arachnid? Probably LotR’s. Safety equipment? Likely an SNL sketch with Mike Meyers where his parents put him in safety pads with a bungee chord related to “helicopter parenting”, I had no knowledge of astrology then but technically the scorpio Pluto generation with probably a strong mars are old enough to be heavily influencing the media placing that anxiety and strategic activism in news/media causing unnecessary social conflict. Manic vaccine panic on both sides is oddly prophetic, but also not since I can lay out linear dream symbol influences.
I’ll admit, part of my putting off deep diving into Becca Tarnas’s work is because she goes into a weird realm I’ll uncomfortably get into where I know what she’s actually saying. Some is just terminology that sounds mystical, some is actually unexplainable phenomenon like feeling like you’ve read a book before the first time reading it. Me, recognizing at like 4 that adults live in a fantasy constructed world that’s potentially dangerous by believing it’s objective reality.
As of now, I want yo study the lots (especially spirit) because I think there’s something important there that’s life enriching that’s definitely an uncomfortable subject. If my uranus transit was that weird, who knows how absolutely bizarre it’ll be when Neptune goes out of pisces hitting that lot of spirit.
Claire has been a wonderful guest in each episode she’s been in.
Gemini MC.. I’d be the one to start talking about astrology with a hypothetical client and suddenly start talking about sea turtles. If it was a cancer chart type person maybe it’d make sense.

Found this video and a brief book on how to really do this… I now realize Uranus is all up in my 10th house on top of my natal sun, north node, and it will pass transiting Jupiter after it hit my MH when this journey alllll started 😅 Like you say at one point - I can’t make this sh*t up! 😂 I was trying to figure out what this whoooole phase of my life meant and it’s like. Oh. It’s right there 💁🏼‍♀️😂

This makes me want a reading from Chris (maybe after I've scrounged up enough to take his course) almost every astrologer I have met is confounded by my constant traveling and early intentional estrangement from my biological relatives as a Cancer stellium, Venus in Gemini, Aries rising at 15'
I believe it's got something to do with my third house being jammed full since most of the moves are in the same general area before making a leap of about 1-3,000 miles and then jumping around again. 🤔

Aries rising and venus in gemini should not have them confused by this. I find that the sea of ordinary (or not very good) astrologers is huge. But very few are actually truly nuanced. Everything can be seen in the chart somewhat....so if they aren't seeing that, yikes!

Hi, thanks for this video. I'm just starting my first year of study of Ancient Astrology. There is so much to learn, and I wonder sometimes how much do I need to study before I get my head around everything and start reading charts confidently! I was also thinking if it is advisable to learn astrology with different teachers?

I think you have a decent voice for audiobook. Just make sure you speak in an even tone. Most services allow you to speed up or slow down but if the tone is not well paced it's hard

Every time Saturn transits one of the even houses (2, 4, 6 etc.) I feel like I’m being held done in a straight jacket. I have sun in 12th house Capricorn and about 6 months left of Saturn in my 12th house, does anyone else get this?
