Another good example of a native with a prominent Mercury that I meant to mention is Donald Glover / Childish Gambino, who has Virgo rising with Mercury in Virgo, and really exhibits the ability of Mercury to be multi-talented and multifaceted with his various careers as a comedian, actor, singer / rapper, writer, and producer. Who are some other famous people with prominent Mercury placements that you think are a good example of some of the qualities we mentioned in the episode?

Tori Amos has a Mercury in Virgo that rules her MC in Virgo. Besides being a piano prodigy, her lyrics are written in a very specific and cryptic way that can only be parsed through the context of her life and the accompanying music. Her lyrics are also rife with literary references and mythological figures. Her fan base has websites devoted to decoding her songs and their meanings.

Re-lisisting to this episode made me re-look at a chart from when I was 17 years old, walking home from work, struck by a drunk driver and flew 66ft though the air. Uranus was directly conjunct my natal Mercury, Sun conjunction. I had to learn how to read and write and communicate all over again. A very literal example of Mercury/Uranus transit.

My Mercury is in my Sun sign, Capricorn. This sent me down a whole new rabbit hole. And made so much sense to me. I always latch onto the little things and often ruminate on them. I also have a standing joke that I am a wealth of useless knowledge because I tend to remember small insignificant facts. I learn (absorb) more because of this podcast than from choosing books alone.

was so sad that you never got to Pluto as I have it exactly conjunct Mercury in the 10th house and was looking forward to hearing about Mercury-Pluto in their aspects. Grateful if you might discuss this one in a future episode, Chris. Everything else was wonderfully enlightening. Thank you Chris and Jo.

What I've noticed with Mercury/Pluto aspects is the addition of fixation, which can sometimes manifest as being super inquisitive or detective-minded, and sometimes manifest as hyperfocus. It's a great tool, but can also be quite binding in a way that becomes uncomfortable, and can lean toward obsession and/or compulsion in some cases. However, getting super into things or getting a little obsessed isn't always bad! But Pluto can sometimes make that skill into kind of a knob that's either at 0 or 100. The tricky part is modulating it.

Key words that come to mind for this placement:
      Psychological responder
      Dark humor
Connection with death work, translations of rebirth, translation of death /trauma
Compulsory analysis in what you do in the world, or are known for
      Understanding motivations of others
When two planets were together, it would be thought of as a new energy. A plutonian mercury.
It may also speak to an event, changing what you do in the world or how you communicate in what you do.

I recently was thinking about this because i have these 2 planets in a trine. It's different from a conjunction, but i was reminded of Mythology, where Mercury was one of the rare gods who had safe passageway into the Underworld, so you might want to consider how you may be able to delve deeper into the "roads less taken", occult or into the deep psyche for example. You have the mind to get through a lot of what might seem like "nightmares" to other people, but perhaps Mercury grants you the clarity to get through the darkness. Just a thought. But it is a Scooby-Doo type detective ability, so i'm sure you'll find it out eventually! 🤍

Mercury with Saturn makes the detective, the investigator. I was an investigator for a detective agency years ago in my youth and this aspect made me never let go of a puzzling case until it was solved. This Mercury aspect, coupled with Saturn, made me study cases from many angles until the subject is exhausted. Mercury gives me so many ideas and shines the light and gives dimensions to these ideas. Mercury can be like spraying WD40 on a subject. It is a wonderful thought-lubricant!

I learned so much from this Podcast. I am learning astrology and refer to this channel on a regular basis to get a deeper conceptual clarity. In Vedic astrology (a.k.a Parashari) we refer to Sun as significator of Astrology. Mercury is definitely needed for astrology as it gives logic and flair for calculations, however, it lacks intuition. Alongside Mercury, good Jupiter is also seen.

Enjoyed this concise and clear discussion. My merc is in sag in 11th. Have been drawn into heated discussions in politics and religion, but am mostly into spirituality. I never intend for it to get negative, and related to the part about changing directions. Grand daughter is virgo and has detective abilities, I can relate to as Scorpio. My mom was gem with Virgo moon, a small but muscular swimmer, and I relate to her as a hummingbird. Also loved her teaching me to swim in the ocean at 3. She was expert teacher, and the one time I swam way out past " undertow" , there was a shark alert and I was the only one left out in the water. Needless to say, I swam the fastest I ever have. And still have all parts, so far. This was a very mind enriching podcast and I thank you for all your hard work. Sometimes the details lead to much mind expansion! God bless! Mercury in Libra / 6th House here.
A few things I thought to add:
You mention Uranus and technology. I believe Uranus is said to be a higher octave of Mercury? Uranus is more of a higher awareness and that tends to come with aquarian ideas like innovation, so I agree that both Mercury and Uranus both relate to technology. Mercury is more about the logic of code as well as the building of a machine through it's individual components, but Uranus relates more to the invention of technology and an artifical intellegence of sorts.
On another point, Mercury in masculine signs from my experience tends to present itself more as talkative types, whereas feminine sign mercuries have a tendency to be better listeners that have an internal dialogue.
Air mercuries tend to conceptualise and think in the abstract and have a need to communicate that to others whereas earth mercuries are more analytical and discriminating and in reality, which speaks to the two sides of Mercury.
Furthermore it's interesting that Mercury has no inherent gender as an objective planet but every sign of the zodiac is either masculine or feminine, so maybe Mercury just doesn't have a exaltation, because a true exaltation of Mercury would be in a sign that is neither masculine nor feminine so as to be good at inner decoding of the world and an ability to express and explore new ideas. So Mercury will always be swayed to a polarity of its sign and can never truly be its full self and play that role. Just my thoughts on that.
Anyway, much to think about, brilliant video and inspired a lot of thought! Thank you both for a great in depth look at the topic

One thing about Uranus is that it tends to be more of like a paradigmatic system shift. Mercury jumps all around within a system and understands, taking apart that system relying often on logic. Uranus on the other hand tends to bring about a new paradigm. It disrupts existing logical axioms or brings about entirely new axioms. So it disrupts the system of logic itself while Mercury really appreciates being within logic.

I have Mercury and Venus conjunct (4 min) in my Pisces 7th. I actually try to paint a picture with my communication style. I also think in pictures and colors. Listening to a lecture, I actually "see" the words as if I were reading a book.
Additionally, speaking toward the signification of slyness for Mercury. Gurdjieff's "Fourth Way" comes to mind. Whereas the yogi, monk, fakir use considerable effort and make a big deal of wearing down their attachments to become enlightened; the sly man does it instantaneously without reservation or notice.
For example, "If you’re going to leave town and you owe lots of money, you know, you mustn’t announce that you’re leaving or give a farewell party to your friends, because the grocer will find out. So the art of the sly man is to make no contest, but simply to leave without one word. In other words, that’s the meaning of wú wéi in the technical vocabulary of Taoism. Wú wéi: not to interfere, not to force things. That’s the best translation of wú wéi: “not to force things.” But so, he just drops it like that. But in this respect, you see, you’re your own worst enemy. Because even if you serve notice privately on yourself that suddenly you’re going to drop it all, already the devil knows-because who do you think the devil is?"

I think the thing that is interesting about mercury retrograde ( or any retrograde really) is to reconceptualize it that it isn't the planet that is retrograde, it is our perception of the the things represented by that planet that is retrograde. We are retrograde, not the planet.

The sun and mercury thing with the inner dialogue and what you actually end up saying or communicating makes so much sense.
I have a Mercury Sag (so debilitated) and people always seem to think what I have to say is so positive, uplifting and philosophical.
Even if at times it also comes off very ideological and too grande lol
But my Sun is in Scorpio, with my Rising sign and I have my Moon in the 8 H,
meaning my inner dialogue is like super deep and dark, and I often end up in very depressing scenarios when I‘m ok my own.
But only the closest people know me in this way.
It‘s like first people meet my rising, and think I‘m very snobbish and reserved, then they see I‘m super easy to talk to only to find out that indeed internally I am also very deep and dark haha
Also My Mercury is opposing my Moon in Gemini, which does genuinly make it hard to get my feelings across when I talk

This was a fantastic talk and I thoroughly enjoyed diving into the significations of Mercury in its fall/detriment (in Pisces) as this is the case in my chart. My natal Mercury is the ruler of my Lot of Daimon/Spirit, so it plays a fairly prominent role in my spiritual life. It is in Pisces in the 6th house and squares my natal Saturn in Sag. (by whole sign, not by degree). As a small child I struggled with a series of developmental delays and sensory processing disorders (especially with my capacity to comprehend auditory stimuli). This is a challenge as a classically-trained musician, but one I have learned to work with over the years. My relationship with my natal Mercury placement is quite complex and I see where it is in detriment squaring Saturn through these childhood challenges but I've really come to embrace my Piscean Mercury. I am an amateur opera singer and at least like to think I have a beautiful voice. :) This seems rather Piscean to me. I also have learned to embrace the ways in which my mind wanders in rather unpredictable streams of thought...my Piscean "meandering musings" (if you will). Thanks for this! It was a way of reframing the concept of essential dignities and not demonizing planets in fall/detriment...In some ways, it has been very rewarding (in the long run) to have my Mercury in detriment because I have really had to work hard to master my communication style...Sometimes I think things that are initially challenging for us end up being our greatest skills and/or gifts to the world.

There is a great rapport of both personalities in this episode. Dare I say Chris looks like he is actually having fun.... must be the astrology.
My poor Mercury is working so hard, I can feel it at times. Exaggeration, but that rides well with my Sagi stellium with a combust Mercury in detriment, all in the 3rd house so an accidental dignity? Night chart. My school life from 6 till 16 was a nightmare and one to be endured, but 2 University degrees later, I find out I am actually dyslexic and probably with an ADHD - inattentive type brain. Blew my mind when looking at the significations of Mercury.
I am going to look at my secondary progressed chart, to see if any of my educational break throughs match up. Like when I eventually learnt to read.
Jo reminds me of a dear friend of mine. OMG she is an intellectual beast, her brain is fascinating. From D.I.Y. to yoga to PhD's to child rearing to Plant life and the list goes on. Virgo rising with Sun stellium in the 3rd in Scorpio... if I needed to dispose of a body, I swear she would leave no trace.
Great episode... Ima have to listen to the next half another time.

I don't have an accurate birth time for her, but my paternal grandmother was a Virgo sun and stellium, and a Libra moon. The older I get and tap into my 6h themes as the primary story of my life, the more I am told by my paternal relatives how much I remind them of her. Hope to obtain a birth time for her one day, but if not a chart rectification would be so fascinating.

I was hoping you’d get into houses because I always like hearing others perspective on Mercury in the 12th.
Virgo ascendant, Mercury in Leo (r) 12th conjunct sun and Saturn where Saturn is in virgo either 12th or 1st depending on preferred method. Some other minor aspects like with Jupiter (semi-sextile) and I think a midheaven sextile. I’m kinda glad Neptune trines sun but just misses Mercury now. However, putting Neptune into words to communicate it is actually difficult to do which is why I enjoyed being pointed to Jung (reluctantly) and Campbell. I enjoyed the Saturn part because this is a detail that can be smelled 1,000,000 miles away and what I can be notorious for. Throw in the libra plus sun in opposite sign of moon the contrarianism has no limits. Debates? I don’t enjoy them, but friends would start topics of the week just because they knew I could get lured into them enjoying the carnage from a distance. My saying is “the truth has no holes in it” and any idealism is picked at like a child first discovering bubble wrap on Christmas morning. Prior to watching/listening to your Richard Tarnas episode I came across another interview where Tarnas later was asked about Jordan Peterson who’s like an imaginary mortal enemy; I was impressed by his gracefulness where it’s a near tie with Gabor Mate in addressing him where Tarnas gets the kindness award. I actually referenced every single Peterson citation side by side by the actual quotes of those he cited where maybe 80% of his references stated the opposite of what Peterson said. It’s a stressful placement in that Leo isn’t exactly wanting to me meticulous, but I’m learning to tone it down because Saturn has its good points, but it’s also a sure way to never get anything done. I eventually learned that, even if things are perfectly crafted in communication, others can take it and see/hear/read whatever they want so it doesn’t matter how “perfect” it is. Saturn, however, can be brutal and I’m slowly learning to tone it down. Tarnas has a good point that Jung was a product of his time, but that also includes that Jung viewed things individually and collectively; it’s important to state that he was clear we can be as individualized as we want, but we also need to cooperate with agreed upon “norms” and we can debate what those are. Pure individualism is anarchy and the irony is individualism is co-dependent on being defined by the other. We’re all unique by default.
Part of me wants to list off Saturn and Mercury examples, but they can be off the rails. It can seem like a devils advocate in cases if it’s just about responsibility in communication which is why I don’t like Peterson. However, I looked at his chart recently and noticed he has Saturn directly on his south node which… he’s having an experience.
I was hoping for more on Mercury retrograde, but I found there’s one on this specifically right under this one so.. my Mercury is very unpredictable/erratic and almost always non linear. I had issues in youth with the Saturn/Mercury where I wouldn’t write again and my Saturn return actually had a major car accident that caused bone damage where I developed a minor off/on lisp which I’m about to get fixed which forced me to write again. Enjoyable episode, just too short.

Revisiting the planet series, I have no intent of comments. I figured I would here because I’m choosing to spend more time learning more about the guests. Different interviews, topics of their focus. Jo’s frustrating because I want to check more out on the 12th house where I don’t want to go off in another direction not being in a “house” mood right now. I’ll pile up too much reading material. I definitely want to because I found myself listening to this reading multiple 12th house interpretations just through searches where it reignited my “12th interpretations are a mess” passion. Not all bad, just mental checklists of “yes, yes, no, oh.. that’s awful and that’s downright unethical, that’s great and needs expanded on…” I feel like Jo has a great view that can clear up that mess.
The good are really good, areas I never thought about. One piece mentioned Avelar stating Venus can be a co-signifier by “vice” where there was mild miss reading on the depth that was self admitted. My Mercury 12th may show here as ascendant ruler. Vices of Venus, yes, they can show up there. The “bed pleasures” interpretation of the 12th can be needing more sleep than usual and various Venusian overindulgences like sex even as fantasy. Alcohol and smoking? I don’t drink and knew right away that it would be problematic because it lifts the Leo with sun Leo 12th burden off the back. That caution was learned by how easily nicotine can be addictive due to Mercury in 12th retrograde 2 degrees from sun where the stimulant/depressant effect helps focus and clearer thinking. Definitely a 12th house Vice. Other vices can show where I don’t have many of the issues having the ruler of the 12th in 12th which humorously equate to the 7 deadly sins. Everyone has a 12th, everyone has coping mechanisms that if overindulged can have significant negative impacts. I could write a 1,000 page book on the 12th, the problem is it needs to be under 50 pages large font. Deep diving into astrology is definitely being done in a Mercury way where I’m eventually breaking it apart to reassemble it for some unknown reason. It could break away into a completely different subject. I want as many voices stating their case to avoid unintentional “deception”. The only thing so far that sets off sirens and red flags is when it’s stated astrology is a vessel for pushing an agenda and it’s not wrong to do so because it happens anyways. Yes, but not on purpose.
Using this method is probably a blessing for everyone because that Mercury (along with other placements) have someone so frustrated they’d run out of a room screaming. Example: one of the interviews I listened to with Jo, the topic of reincarnation and choosing this life came up where it was said that no one would choose to die by police brutality. Mercury activating would say it’s making an unknown assumption using philosophical absurdism in the vein of former justice Scalia relating gay marriage as a gateway to marrying pets. The most famous case of reincarnation in western culture is the pilot who died on a drill to be reincarnated recalling that life. He became friends with his former troops and grew up to be a military pilot again. It’s less clear when you get into the role of a military pilot is to actually kill, not to mention that in order to live it’s necessary to feed off of death. This gets into gnostic philosophy that the world is imperfect and potentially evil, not going there. But if reincarnation is true, the feeling of existential importance of this one life may not be all that true. It may not be as consequential as we think, but diving into nihilism isn’t useful because you have to be born again into the world your legacy helped build. But like the myth of er, it may not be that we pick our fate. This pilot who died probably had no choice or will in that matter, but that purpose could be the same as Er to relay a message. We’ve become more material as a culture, these widespread NDE’s and reincarnation cases could be just a nudge to get others attention looking for an answer. Overall. I’d have to see more on the upset argument about choosing life. If you can’t see anything good in your life you’d want to experience you probably have bigger problems than just that astrological interpretation. I wouldn’t define a life by how someone died. Yet, I completely understand the argument because some astrologers say anyone with a 12th house placement is being karmically punished which is more absurd to say. An unspoken joke when reading things that my Mercury being in retrograde in the 12th with sun in Leo etc… “I’m being punished for words out of ego so on, so forth..” I was probably an astrologer in the past who made up that unethical interpretation. It’s a weird paradox! I don’t see the 12th being piscean, especially because I see more to support Jupiter ruling pisces and that’s definitely not a Jupiter house. Saturn makes a ton of sense, but the Neptune similarity and saying the pisces association is this is a fair statement. With biases, especially cultural, we are so extroverted and honestly selfish where I can see why this house is viewed with so much doom and gloom along with horrible judgment. It’d make sense if you baked Saturn and Venus together you may get Neptune. I’ve probably mentioned before that having moon in the 6th is something I’d argue about but it’s dependent on how the 6th is described. It’s possible the 6th, 8th, and 12th are very misunderstood where they’re just not that relatable to anyone. I’m intrigued planet wise where I feel like Saturn and Pluto have been cross bred where neither (in modern) actually mean what they should. Tracking transits with lots hit by uranus, I’m siding more and more with the Prometheus argument.
I think it was said Jo is the current president or vice of the young astrologers group. I bet that’s rough. Just because there seems to be more generational in fighting compared to, say, my generation. Harder with just a theme of astrology. I can die at any moment, I definitely plan to never die. But as I’ve aged I don’t fear it. I do look at youth as wasted in ways because I allowed myself to be diverted by the same things young people are experiencing now. My point would be I’ll likely have a hard time during this process of diving more into the guests in this series because I’ll be listening to younger podcasters constantly doing that inner conversation of “… well, that’s not … this is….”
There’s enough content on houses and I’m really excited about the upcoming signs series. It would be great if Jo was back on just for a 12th house focus that just deals with more proper (healthy) interpretations. I’ll argue malefic’s are malefic’s just because trying to make them too positive can possibly blindside someone. If someone views mars as being an ideal positive they may express it negatively feeling empowered to do so. Emphasis on malefic is just a balance. The 12th is backwards in some cases. It has positives that are just challenging to get through.
Rambling. Just surprised because I didn’t expect to dive in to find 12th house subjects. Pleasant surprise.

AstroDatabank's collection of Philosophers' charts reveals some interesting placements regarding Mercury in the natal chart. There is a preponderance of Mercury retrograde and/or under the beams, and/or Epimethean (night star). Mercury is often also in hard aspect to its dispositor and/or Jupiter and/or Saturn. Mercury is also often in hard aspect to Mars. So, these factors seem to enhance Mercury's qualities and service to the Sun.

WOW. So I have Mercury Conjunct Mars to the degree, in Taurus in 4th. I have noticed that I am patient in arguments, but when I am pushed to the limit I EXPLODE. It is so interesting how I go from 0 to 100 so quickly. I will be so quiet and receptive, but when they say something annoying I get angry, loud, swear and I fight with my words. My anger in debates and arguments happens so quickly that I only realize I blew up after the argument is over. With it being in the 4th, almost ALL of my most heated debates and arguments have been with my parents, sister or roommates! I kinda like my mars/mercury conjunction because I am so assertive and I will fight for what's right. I have dealt with racist and homophobic family members and I would always argue against them passionately. But yes, I've noticed that I have a fiery and sharp tongue and would sometimes need to apologize after. :)

@theastrologypodcast I cannot believe that I discovered this podcast recently, and not sooner. Looove your approach. Have your book and am gonna dive deep soon. My mercury confuses me. I have noticed the whole sign system works better, but I combine it with placidus. So my Mercury is in gemini 10 degrees (conjuncting 5th house cusp in placidus and in 6th house whole sign system). It is in exact opposition to my moon 10 degrees saggitarius (10th house and conjuncts 11th house cusp in placidus and 12th house whole sign system AND MOON CONJUNCTS URANUS (3 degrees IN SAGG neptune retrograde is there to but ot of orb). Then my mercury trines SATURN retrograde in LIBRA (16 degrees, in 8th house placidus, 10th house whole sign...mars and pluto are there too, both retrogrades). AND it sextile venus in Aries (6 degrees 2nd house placidus, 4th house Whole sign). I am a capp rising. And I struggle with my mercury. I want to know everything and immedeatly i aread books paralaly but nothing stays in my head. I have been into astrology and tarot and read soooomany books but I dont write anything because it is difficult fpr me to stay focused for so long on one theme. so I switch constantly not ending anything..I thought the saturn will ground my persue of knowledge but it is not hapening. long term comitment to serious study is a hassle..but going through bits and pieces about everything..that is me. But when I see how much time I invest in going from theme to theme, and nothing really stays long term It bothers me. :-) hahaha. Also critical in how much I have to learn more and it overwhelms me. Like I am never gonna learn it as I whish to (astrology for example). emotions coloring the abilty to either asimilate knowledge or not being able to asimilate. some astrologers told me that I will write a book and signing them a copy, but i just dont see it hapening.hahaha. Thank you for this. It has been wonderful and chalk full of knowledge.

Another great episode, thank you! Having Mercury and Saturn Conjoined in my 8th WSH of Taurus... Money always stresses me out.. I mean I know it does for everyone, but it is the only thing that ever stresses me out of all the areas of life I guess you could say. And maybe it is Jupiter in my 1st house of Libra, it always seems to work out... or work out enough, that the stress can go away and things can get back to a normal-ish state again. IDK, but I truly appreciated this episode.

Your subconscious remembers your losses, Jupiter in Libra is a life of justices in partnerships. Being overly prideful or independent could sabatage you in getting what is rightly yours even if in this life it doesn't make sense. 💚
