  • Renting in a rooming house is an affordable option for many, but as Dilshad Burman explains, the rules and rights of tenants might differ compared to those renting an entire home.

I purchased my home 15 years ago and turned it into a rooming house to help me pay for it.
Best decision, although some of my roommates over the years were horrible, overall the decade long experience left me with life long friendships.
A 5 bedroom 3 bathroom house with 5 roommates is more than enough room for 5 adults.
Everybody wins in this arrangement - they got relatively super low rent and could save up to buy their first homes, and I got to own a home I couldn't afford alone at the time.
Today I have a wife and those once rented rooms are full of kids :)

Kudos. With the affordability crisis, Governments really should relax the rules on this and basements instead of red taping everything with fees, licensing and so on. People have been renting rooms forever and largely without incident.

Rooming houses save students from unaffordable living. 2 of my children opted for this, and they benefited from it in many ways while being good tenants. Be careful who you rent to because they can stop paying rent and refuse to leave.

Rooming house used to be very common. We are reverting to the mean. This is a great option for people with low means. It’s much better than being homeless and a lot less people would be homeless if they had more options like this

It easy to kick them out if they don’t pay rent and they don’t take advantage of the law or stay in your house without paying for the rent and they and their lawyer make you forgive the rent and pay them (cash for keys)
50 k to agree to move out you can do nothing about it and it legal too

I wonder if the landlord who owns the flop house down the street from my house that 8 guys share and park their cars all over their front lawn makes sure he follows these rules.

If you wait, Justin Trudeau will build you a house and give you dental care as well. Of course dental care wasn't Justin's idea but whatever.

@@B.D.F. I’m talking about a rooming house with three strangers. You don’t want too many people there.

Lots of landlord are breaking this rules.
They r going in without a giid reason n breaking the privacy act.
Since they know that there is a backlog on tenants board issues cant be dealt with.
Privacy is important because people have their important docs
