Fair enough reaction. Keep in mind their original introduction into rock was through playing a video game. I love this song & don’t care if it’s “commercial.”

Everybody has their own taste, but this song has taken Latin America by storm! All the way down to Argentina! lol

The thing about The Warning is that you can hear many influences and Genres even in the same song. They manage to have a sound that runs through the 70s, 80s and early 90s while still being original and fresh. All of their songs are very catchy which can make you think they are copying something, but it is the feeling more than the sound that they capture, once you hear more. I have literally watched hundreds of reaction videos to The Warning and reactors have mentioned a wide range of influences they hear, such as: Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, early Heart, early Motley Crue, Guns and Roses, early Stone Temple Pilots, Queen, etc. They really encompass a large swath of decades of Rock. The more you listen to them, the more influences you will hear, but it is all still fresh and original. They really are incredible songwriters for their ages. I cannot wait to see how much better they will get as they mature as musicians and songwriters, since they are already great!

I came to the conclusion that the influences we here are really our own ears trying to relate it to something familiar. I've heard at least 10 different bands named when someone hear Dust to Dust the first time 10 people, 10 different "this reminds me of....... insert band name"
I once told the band that Hunter reminded me of Fastway. They said "who's that. We've never heard of them". That is when my theory completely clicked.

It does help if you understand the backstory behind the music, as well as the lyrics and the meaning of the song. It kind of provides a bigger perspective related to the song and why it stands out.

Singing and drumming whilst bitching out a journalist, excellent! It’s all subjective, but I don’t hear any other bands anywhere near their age putting out performances anything like this. Especially in the UK (too busy trying to look cool and not playing) I suggest you give it another listen, this band are quite unique...

Thanks Dave. I agree with everything you said. Now. The reason I like this song is the reasons you don't. Ha!😄 The sounds like other bands things I never quite got. If I disliked songs because they sounded like someone else. I would dislike a lot of songs. I'm glad you liked Survive. To this day it's my favorite Warning song.

First off, thanks for another TW reaction...I enjoy your analysis, although it seemed a little lacking on this one. And honestly, I'm a little confused as to why you're treating this song somewhat indifferently as this song rocks hard, comes at you with a catchy, memorable riff, a driving low-end bass line reminiscent of a dance track, hooky sing-along chorus and well-conceived lyrics that say so much more than the two songs I've listened to by The Donnas. I think I get where you're coming from in terms of the somewhat simply structured song, but isn't this also the blueprint for 90% of all pop, punk and rock songs? ETA: I guess you're referring to the fairly simply melody line, but I think that was purposeful to emphasize what Paulina is singing...it's how she sings it that elevates it to a different realm than just a punky pop-rock band like The Donnas.
What's particularly cool to me is that Dany employs a wah pedal for the first time, which adds a new dimension that their melodic brand of rhythm-based rock hasn't really explored yet. Not to mention the drummer is singing it like Dave Grohl belts out his staccato (bridge & chorus) lyrics in The Pretender, but without being behind the drum kit on stage, choosing to strum some guitar chords instead.
Also of interest to note, they threw this song together in a matter of days, knocked out the recording in one day's session, and released it as a single ahead of this big show in their hometown of Monterrey back in June (and this is the very FIRST live performance of it). Pretty impressive if you ask me. Further, if you research the lyrics, you'll see they are responding to Latin American and in particular Mexican critics who have taken them to task for writing all of their songs in English up to this point.
Anyway, I think the track is quite anthemic and a great arena rock song that conveys a resounding message to those myopic critics who haven't taken the time to get to know them and understand their musical influences. At any rate, I know you're not saying that you don't like the song, but I'm a bit surprised considering you seemed to be enjoying it much more whilst listening and bopping your head along to the music. So the impression given as you were rocking to the song didn't quite comport with your analysis, or at least you seemed a bit muted in terms of your analysis. But if you' re comparing it to their other songs, I totally understand different tastes and how you may have different favorites than my TW favorites. Having said that, I think you would really enjoy one of their harder-edged, near-metal songs called Queen of the Murder Scene, the title track of their concept album. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/OHN0-arxsx4/w-d-xo.html
PS -- None of TW's songs are super complex, nor will they blow you away with elaborate musical concepts I don't reckon, but they have demonstrated with a song like this that they are not afraid to veer into more of a pop-metal sensibility with a rousing chorus that hearkens back to late 90's/early 2000's pop punk, punk metal, pop-rock etc. Some folks have likened it to a bit of a club dance track, and I hear what they are saying, so on that front, it's a cool blend of influences with clever guitar riffs and a booming bass line that punches you in the gut as you are driving down the road with the song cranked to "eleventeen" on the volume! Listen to it again or turned up really loud in the car and you will be humming the main melody or singing the chorus before you realize it!

The song *Queen of the Murder Scene* is probably my favorite from that album but just like all the other songs on that album, it's easier to like when you understand the lyrics and for that knowing English simply isn't enough. Since it's a concept album it more like starting to read a book in the middle. Another thing about the songs on that album is that they are best enjoyed live when you can experience their acting at the same time. They don't just play and sing, they show half of the story in their faces while singing. They really are actors as well.

Next ones from The Warning in order to see them in different modes should be:
    1) XXI century blood - the official video (their only official video so far)
    2) Dull Knives (at the Hell and Heaven Festival)
I'm sure you will enjoy them a lot!

  • @MaddogJones

Your reaction is so ironic that this song wasn't about them, as this was a song written as a middle finger to their Mexican critics that had labelled them "malinchista" a mexican pejorative meaning a cultural traitor because all of their previous songs had been written in english. This song couldn't be more personal to the band. All your other critics are valid in that they are your opinion and you are more than entitled to that, I disagree and find this song is very distinctive especially against anything else released today. Of course there will be influences in their music, no artist can be 100% original, it's what they do with those influences that makes them unique and stand out against the rest and this song, this band sticks out from the rest of the pack.
I really like your theme song but it ain't no secret that it's derived from So What by Anti-Nowhere League, cool nonetheless...

thanks for your honest reaction to The Warning. i do gotta ask why u think their versus dont stand out and it's too similar to other songs being that the song was personal and was addressing a very specific criticism they get from fellow mexicans. they get called "malinichista", which is sort of a mexican race traitor, simply because they mainly write and sing in english instead of spanish, and this song (which is the only song they did in spanish) was a respectful FU to those critics. so in my opinion, if u close your eyes and listen to it, it doesn't sound like other bands. and if u open your eyes it also doesnt sound like other bands because you'll see that the drummer is singing

Tom Karasch I was stunned by my reaction to it. I was expecting to love it. It just fails musically. I think I set my expectations to an unrealistic level, when it comes to these three. All of their stuff is great, if not brilliant. This one, not so much. 🤷🏻‍♂️

If you are not able to even maintain the correct aspect ratio on the target video while reacting, and obviously not understanding the message (i. e. the lyrics) the song carries, you should not react to it in the first place.
