      Volcanite Ltd. back in the 60's ran the buzzin dozens @ 525hp all 2 stickers.
      Only 2 were left 5X4 the rest they made um 4X4's... They still had the fastest trucks running till JM Tanak brought out his 351 Pete with the Cat 1693 425hp... That truck beat Volcanite's Petes on the hill. Yeah, Cat's can beat um on the hill...but the feel & the sounds of the 2 stick Detrots were something else!!! I love um... But this kid needs to learn to split shift...bobtailing Donkey!!!

      @@KohalaIronWorksCase If the V12s were turbo'd on each bank no way could a cat beat them. I saw a DCO Transtar with 8V71T nearly beat a 475 Cat in those B-train log truck Films. The driver never changed down and the Cat's torque rise got him on the crest of the hill. It's all in the driver with a Detroit. Great story you told back in the day

    That’s my dream tractor setup there, 12v71N with Jakes, 6x4, Rockwell 5.29 rears and Hendrickson spring over walking beam suspension (I hate air ride), and 11r24.5 rubber. That truck is set up perfect to pull a 26 or 28 foot full frame end dump trailer here in the hills of WV. Rockwell’s with 5.29’s are really popular around here, that gear with an overdrive trans and 11r24.5’s gets you a top speed around 77, cruising speed of 65 and plenty of pull in the hills. Hard to beat.

      I had 75 pete long hood with 12V, 5x4 double over, hendrickson rubber, its not a money maker. Ive got 5 now. And one is an 84 pete double frame big cam 4, 400, 15 over extended leaf, 5.38 sshd. I end dump 32ft rock trailers. Its way cool dual vortex, all chrome. Its still not efficient as newer one. Have 2 with 475 cats they run circles around me. But ive got low gears. Nice for backing up steep hills on house pads.

      @@scottcoleman7148 I run a 400 big cam 3 every day, it does the job for sure. My truck started life with a BC-4 but the low flow cooling setup ended up causing a lot of issues and the P.O. Put a big cam 3 and high flow radiator in it, runs 200 or less even on the big hills now.

      @@J.R.in_WV friend of mine converted mine from low flow to normal. It started out with 8v92 silver, broke crank 22 years ago. Put a big cam 1 in that we had, that was a great eng. Last year bought a 400 cat had it rebuilt found out the fire wall was different so buddy rebuilt this Cummins. Its so slow top speed 60, it makes it hard to drive. Ill put 2spds in it some day. We've got 7 trucks some are way cool. Im 60 so ill be dead in 20 years so doesnt much matter. My son has a 67 pete long hood which is very rare considering they didnt biuld them till 69. Ive got a 69 narrow nose with 5x4 its all chromed out. I drove a 72 with 13spd with 4spd brownie for 20 years it was a dump and pup. The little windows were cool but cabs fell apart and we were always fixing doors and window cranks.

    Lot of memories. I started driving in 1980 and there were still a few duplex out on the road yet. I operated one for about two weeks while I was waiting for mine to get out of the shop and it was quite an experience. I remember I had to pull over one time because I got both of the Transmissions out of sync and I couldn't get my primary back into gear. The other thing I noticed about this truck is the fans up on the dash. Some of the trucks had 2 metal fans by the windows. Most of those trucks back then didn't have air conditioning so if you didn't use those fans you could get your windows fogged up pretty quickly. I drove a 359 Pete with a screaming 2 cycle Detroit and a Spicer transmission. That thing was so noisy that having a CB or a radio on board was pointless

    Everyone criticizes that he can't shift. Well I bet the only transmissions those people shifted are those newer semi automatics and don't know what it is like to shift one of these.

      I didn't see the double clutching. Up shifting doesn't require a throttle match, just kick the clutch to get out of gear, kick it again to enter the next higher gear. Down shifting is where you have to rev match in neutral before kicking the clutch and dropping into the lower gear. Sometimes its only a 250 RPM difference.

      What idiots don't know is these transmissions always grind a bit when cold. The oil in them acts like a brake on the gearset and when it warms up they shift normally.

      @@joseantoniocastrellonjr2568 The rpm change in an Eaton Fuller Road Ranger is 400 rpm for a full gear and 200rpm for a half gear (provided it has a splitter of course).

      I do and it fucking sucks, I got stuck in an automatic for 6 months. What are useless piece of shit in anything but pavement. Thankfully they pulled their heads out of their asses and traded that truck off on a manual

    My auxiliary shifter was worn. Till I learned it, sometimes it would get stuck, you carried a stick behind your seat so you could get under the truck and un-stick it. Also doubled as a fuel gauge. 6/71 and 4x4 trans. Gmc 6900? Dumpity truck. Had to fix my own tires too. 10&11&12.00x20. Dayton wheels and split rings. Ah the good old days! You had to be mechanic, driver, and tire man. Carried big 4way, tubes, patch kit, and an air hose with clip-on chuck, fitting on air tank to hook up air hose. Oh, don’t forget tire hammer. Drivers nowadays wouldn’t do all that. They might get their hands dirty. Or break a sweat. The good old days. I almost forgot until I watched this.

      My 4ft 11in 110lbs wife had a pete with a 23ft end dump with daytons. She carried a tube and some bars and could tear one down change tube in about 50 minutes. Cancer got her in 2010 at 46 years old, a wild little redhead and tough as nails. Always told dirty jokes at shops and didnt own a bra, she was something.

    I owned a 75 Pete with 12 71 had a 5 n 4 double over. I never once shifted that way. As fast as I could move browny truck was gone and used 2 hands shifted both sticks same time when brownie hit over then back to under. No old school eng was faster off a start. But high maintenance and 4 MPG. Collectors toy.

      I had a 5x4 in an LW923 and 8V71 280hp and tried both one-handed and two-handed and I much prefered one-handed and just took the extra time to shift. Taking all the slack out of the linkages and shortening the throw so that the gearknobs were close together made it a lot easier to get through them faster although more effort. The 4 speed in mine was really a 3 speed (under, direct, over) with a deep reduction so that range was only used on the skid site.

    Driving a divorced transmission is an art, the driver in this video is actually very good with it. I drove a Ford F800 that had a 5/4, meaning there is a 5 speed directly bolted to the engine with an output shaft going into a 4 speed that then goes back to the diffs. The shifter on the left is the primary trans/5 speed and the shifter on the right is the secondary 4 speed. You can see that he actually shifts up into high gear on the 4 speed, this pattern is know as 4 in a horseshoe. With 1 and 4 being on top and 2 and 3 being on the bottom respectively. There are many theories about how you “should” shift these monstrosities, but if you’ve ever drove one, you’d know getting it above 40 is a major accomplishment.

      Haha a twin stick not THAT hard to operate well. I an old Mack B61 with a quadruplex (the 20 gear version) and a 1953 Needle-nose KW the same 6+4 Spicer and they really aren’t that difficult to drive (even with a heavy load) it is funny to me how some people go on and on about it being “an art” and “talent” to drive a twin stick, but if you understand how they operate and can drive a single stick transmission, you can pick up the operation of a 2 stick in not too long. Oh, and it isn’t necessary to do the whole arm threw the wheel bit…just be somewhat quick with one hand and you’re fine.

    I love an old 12V-71, and especially in a 359. I'd much rather have an 8V-92TA in a Corvette dash 359. But I could live with that flat dash 359 with the 12V-71 and make it work. It would be really hard to make the 12V-71 nearly as good as an 8V-92, but that's okay.

      The 12V71 in some respects is better than an 8V92, except for weight. It's 855ci versus 736ci, dry liner block vs. wet liner block. Fuel economy may be better with the 8V92 than the 12V71 at the same power level. Overall strength with the 12V71 might be better because of all that iron and the even power pulses. It's the sound that these engines make that decides it though. Do you like the deep moan of the 92 or the racecar like shrill, stereophonic resonance of the 12V71?

    Any heavy duty truck trans synchros or not is gonna clank and bang sometimes, as long as you aren't grinding every single gear you should be fine

    Bro either double clutch it or float it. A real truck driver only uses the clutch for starting and stopping but truck transmissions are non-synchronized so you can't just push the clutch in and shift it like a 5 speed

    whats the sweet spot for these old 2-strokes for cruising? keep the revs low at around 1000 to 15000 when cruising at 55, or do you run them a little higher?

      Nahh they love RPM. Old timers would tell you to slam your hand in the door when your getting in so you drive it right.

      They have the same range as everything else - torque peak at 1400 and rated rpm at 2100 - that's what I drove mine at theoretically but it always depended on the conditions - early or late upshifts and downshifts were a fairly common exception to the rule

      Clutch was put there for a reason. Clutching is always a better way for less wear and tear on the tranny.

      david barb..... when you have "boxes" with straight cut gears (Non-synchro - in all class 7 & 8 trucks), it does Not matter whether you use the clutch or not.... if you miss the shift, either by shifting too fast or too slow so as to not be able to synchronize your engine speed to match the next gear, up or down..... you will grind it, regardless.

      It has a 5 x 4 but this guy can't shift it right. He is just shifting the MAIN BOX alone. then he finally gets around to the Auxiiary. Ok if you are Bob-tailing, won't work on a long pull with a LOAD grossed out. Most especially with a DEADTROIT even it it is a V 12. A v 12 is not that big a deal. Except if you leave it running you cannot fill it up with fuel. Man, those things DRINK Fuel and oil. And that TWO CYCLE SCREAMING all of the time, sheeeesh. When I was driving trucks I would not hire on at a place that had DETROITS. we called them "Yudden Yuddens", Double breasted Yamaha's, Deadtroits, Piece of shit etc. A two Cycle Detroit was never really meant to be a Truck engine, they are GREAT at something where they can run WIDE OPEN all of the time, like an Irrigation Pump, or Shrimp Boat, or Electic Generator. But for TRUCKS??
      Not worth a damn, they don't have any low RPM Torque, it ain't good to let them IDLE, you need a Sampson fast Idle Switch to set the rpms so you can sleep with the Air Conditioner or heater on etc. Notice how they GROWN when UP shifting. He winds it up to 2,350 and when he catches the next higher gear it then GROWLS and MOANS. When the RPMS drop so does the HORSE POWER, a LOT.
      It does matter if it is a 238 or a 350 or a 318 or one of those V-12's. the 8 V 93's were BETTER but they STILL could not compare to a Cummins or a Caterpillar. I don't like Two Cycle and that is what they ARE. Two Cycle. Hence comparing them to a Yamaha. Most of the 318's were cut back to a 290. When they did THAT you could put ANY IDIOT to driving one, and if they did NOT run it our of oil or Water, they had a hard time tearing it up. But oh did they SUCK for a GOOD hand to drive. BB

      They are a 100 MPH downhill 20 mph uphill two cycle oil slobbering piece of junk to me. That Yudden Yudden sound they make drives me crazy. Plus they don't idle well, Oil pressure drops to near zero. I haven't driven one in 36 years, I moved on to better things, but will never forget them. A Cummins you can leave it idling a week with the Heater on or air conditioner won't hurt them.

    dude has no clue how to drive a truck -- simply put it in the highest gear and ride the clutch until you reach speed -- will save wear and tear on the other gears
