@ I’m sure there’s loads of 90’s Polaris atv’s running around on original chains and sprockets just like all rhe Japanese quad’s from that era on original driveshafts and diffs. lol come on
@@billwalter9917 as with most things in modern life. I’m willing to bet there’s shaft driven Hondas/yamahas/suzukis from this era running on original diff fluid and not 1 problem. That’s all I’m saying.
Even if you don't fix it I'd love to see you do a tear down to see how bad the damage is. Might still be worth fixing just to give you more content and views.
chain broke and made that hole for sure that's why de sprocket guard is removed but hey 200$ cant go wrong got some good parts to maybe save another one !
I own a shaft driven and a chain driven 4x4 explorer 400L's. Both equally good, chain one has more snap/pep. The throttle cable locks and sticks in the top throttle plate housing and in the oil pump housing. There was a huge recall as the throttle would stick and be very dangerous to people who didn't know how to react to it. I deleted my oil injection and mix 50:1, pull starts work amazing but for the $60 recoil rebuild kit I suggest as the starters in these quads are notorious for getting wet and bolts backing off from the 2 stroke rattles so blue lock tight everything. Also update to the older/longer air box style they actually deal and work properly. Update your carb and you will be laughing.
Ha! ha! My first and only quad so far. This one may have scared me off. I bought a 1996 4x4 xplorer 400 that I have done the following: All chains replaced, all the sprockets replaced, replaced bearings in front concentric, cleaned the other one, new primary (cracked in many places), new/used plastic clutch cover (over heated/ melted hence cracks in PRIMARY), replaced hub and counter balance oil, front/rear brake pads, one caliper (nearly worn off), one rotor, awd switch, starter, recoil starter, center skid plate (missing), battery, repaired front hilliard clutch (spelling?) with a speedy sleeve on drinkers side, new aluminum bushing that supports the shaft coming off of the transmission that goes thru the frame. Positives: good plastics (all the other manufacturers should take note of their recipe polaris plastics from this era seem to be extraordinarily durable), no rust, electrics not butchered, nice seat, 125 compression cold. Taught me alot. Runs great, treat it with care, but wonder when the piston is going to lose a skirt at 3500 miles. Don't even get me started on MY snowmobiles (72, 78, 93, 01 Arctic cats, all purchased after the quad). My god these things are enormous time/money/maintenance pits. Now I know why my parents never had them when i was a kid and told me i would be better off cross country skiing/snow shoeing or walking. Got my first @ 40, now nearly 50 lol. Here is to more time riding and less time wrenching for the upcoming decade.
Hey Rock!! I was needing help on tips for 06 kodiak 400 4x4. When i turn the ignition to the on position there is nothing. The battery is good. All fuses are good, solenoid is good. I really need help.
Rock, I checked the ignition coil on that king quad and on the primary side ( spade to bolt hole ground I get 0.00 ohms and the secondary side boot to spade I get 15k ohms . The spec are 0.1-0.6 primary and 12-19k on secondary.
Recently picked up a 03 and 04 trail boss 330 $150 for the pair. Plan to make one good runner. Inspired by your videos always loved wrenching on bikes.
As soon as I seen that sprocket guard off on the rear I knew exactly what was going on lol the chain went thru the case and they were too lazy to put it back on since there was a hole in the tranny hahah
That transmission is a bummer. I bet that’s a hard part to find that side case since they didn’t do the chain drive with the front shaft drive on many units.
@ if those units are worth the same as they are in the south none of that body style is worth the expense of a used tranny. That would be tough to get $1000 out of down here.
Rock, I have a change to get 2001 Suzuki king quad 300 4x4 with a plow, 3000 miles with a plow looks good, but ads says runs, but may need a carb clean. He wants $800 what are the possible pit fails on this?
Love to see all the older Polaris videos. I partly blame/credit this channel for influencing me to purchase a 1996 Polaris Xplorer 300 recently, the knowledge shared here goes a long way. Thank you!
@@rockspowersportsbig time! Sure helps to see someone else just diving into the very tasks I'm trying to learn to do myself. Just got to the end, too bad about the transmission!
@@rockspowersports if it was happier running with the choke on does that imply that the mix is too lean since the choke is an enricher? Mine is operating similarly.
Oh man!!! nooooooOoOoo! hole in the trans! (Broken Internal Chain breaks the case, you've seen this I'm sure) son of a bitch! you haven't had very good luck on the cheap ATV's lately, As IF they didn't know that problem was there, selective memory it seems. I have a triple chain 400, the Rear is seperate adjuster from the mid\front, it makes big BANG noises then they are loose, pain in the you know what, at least no universal bearings to worry about! I rode that exact 250 model a bunch previously, it was plenty quick, Surely you have another trans out back, but perhaps work on the Grizzly 660 again? or that Scrambler 850, I'm addicted to your videos buddy, thanks for the content! (Was just working on my damn Warrior with no Spark, replaced Stator, still no voltage from the CDi to coil, I have to admit seeing your even worse luck makes me feel better, you're the best Rock!)
Спасибо!
Wow thanks I really appreciate that! Glad you enjoy the videos!
Hey Rock, watch all your videos, like them👍.
Ah yes, the 3 chain drive Polaris’. As if there wasn’t enough to maintain on a 90’s Polaris atv.
Wasn't that bad if you knew how to do them. Actually more reliable then machines with driveshafts and diffs.
@ I’m sure there’s loads of 90’s Polaris atv’s running around on original chains and sprockets just like all rhe Japanese quad’s from that era on original driveshafts and diffs. lol come on
There WAS lotsa required maintenance on these for sure but, if one kept up with it they would get ya where you were going reliably
@@billwalter9917 as with most things in modern life. I’m willing to bet there’s shaft driven Hondas/yamahas/suzukis from this era running on original diff fluid and not 1 problem. That’s all I’m saying.
I run premix until I know for sure the injection pump is working. Don't ask me how I know that.
Man, nice should have checked inside the air box for mice nest !
Don’t be too bummed about it got a good engine and lord knows you got plenty of other projects for that engine lol . Awesome video thanks man.
Glad you enjoyed the videos, and yes absolutely! $200 for a good running engine is a good deal.
More Polaris content!!
200$ for a good running, good compression engine is a pretty good deal in my opinion
Keep us updated on what your gonna do with that bike it would be cool to see ya fix it and to see how it really runs thanks

Those chains were a nightmare. I had a couple of 94 400 L when I bought the newer scrambler with the shaft front four-wheel-drive I was so excited.
I worked on a Polaris magnum. Sometimes it would turn off with the key.
$200 bucks great deal!!!i love them old Polaris atvs!!!they get a bad rap, but i have had some good times on them!!!!
Those old 250’s are tough as long as you keep oil in them.
@@rockspowersports yup for sure!!they are fun!!!
They are fun till you have to work on them. Worst designed atvs ever but really fun still
Love them old polaris 2 stokes! I have a 99 polaris 400L that i have to rebuild one day! Nice video!
If they’re running, they run like hell. Especially the 400 liquid cooled
How long have you been doing this ? Nice collection
Years of buying projects..

that engine should be the same as the ones were used in the polaris colts in the late 1970s 244 cc. tough little screamer.

Try a 570cc fan cooled....or a indy trail 488cc it's fan cooled as well. Save a liquid for a scrambler frame.... like a 800cc, 850cc, 1000cc 2-stroke
