I absolutely love to get to revisit these Hammer films through channels like this, and learn so much of the history behind the films as well. They truly do not make em like this anymore, and they never will. That’s one of the things that makes Hammer so special, so much came together to capture lightning in a bottle with these movies, that can never be recreated.
I grew up watching Hammer horror movies on Saturday afternoons and late nights in the 70s and 80s. I think I saw these movies even before seeing the original Universal monster movies and while I still enjoy them now, they will always be a fond memory from my youth. Thanks for the video!
I've been a huge Peter Cushing fan since I was a little kid . His acting prowess is second to none. He's had so many iconic rolls from Frankenstein to Dracula to Sherlock Holmes to Star wars. And I love each and every one of his movies by Hammer films. My favorite being the classic The creeping flesh !
@Peace-tw5wn I know. I just said that I have all of his Hammer films movies and my favorite movie he's done is the creeping flesh. But I should have been clearer how I wrote it. My bad .
Oh this is a stunning documentary! I adore the Hammer Frankenstein films. Just everything about those films are so fun, atmospheric and I feel tap into a style of horror I miss. Based mostly on atmosphere and visual aesthetic rather than cheap scares and excessive gore.
While the two words are no longer used by most psychiatrists, now favouring the term "antisocial personality disorder", I find your distinction between Cushing's and Bates' Frankenstein, the first being a sociopath and the second a psychopath rather enlightning! It shows how differences in writing (and performance) can subtly alter a character's perceived psychological make-up.
Thorley Walters was not in the 1959 version of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES for Hammer with Peter Cushing. Watson was played by André Morell. He’s the one in the clip with Peter Cushing.
Yeah Mike and I both missed that somehow while recording. Unfortunately YT doesn't allow to replace files like Vimeo does so I had put that error in the Corrections section. Thanks for the catch!
Thank you. There's too few Hammer docs to enjoy. I don't know why, but I still like Horror of :/ I completely get why everybody hates it, but I love the entire cast. I think I went in expecting to or intending to hate it. I'm just happy that I like the whole franchise :D
Thank you for watching and commenting! I can't say I liked Horror as much as you but I think they were trying to please both parties and they should have gone full parody instead of skirting around it .
It's an okayish parody of Curse of Frankenstein, with the gore and risque bits cranked up, a strong supporting cast, and a lead guy who's maybe a little boring but is at least believable at being a snotty young punk (which was always the least believable aspect of Curse; this forty-five-year-old guy playing a character less than half his age)
My ranking: 1. Curse of Frankenstein. 2.Frankenstein created Woman. 3.Frankenstein must be destroyed. 4.Revenge of Frankenstein. 5. Frankenstein and the monster from Hell. 6. Evil of Frankenstein. 7. Horror of Frankenstein.
I've never heard of Tales of Frankenstein... going to try to find it, looks pretty good. I think Anton Diffring was unfortunately underrated. Though certainly no one's Dr./Baron Frankenstein could ever top Peter Cushing's. He was sorely missed in Horror of Frankenstein, much as I like Ralph Bates
An excellent retrospective! However, it must be said that John Hollingsworth was not the composer of the music of The Curse of Frankenstein, but rather James Bernard, with Hollingsworth conducting. Another curiosity is that The Curse of Frankenstein actually takes place in 1865, not 1860. If you pause the film at the right moment during the scene in the crypt, the plague on Professor Bernstein's coffin shows his year of death as being the former. Of course, The Revenge of Frankenstein and its trailer both clearly state that Frankenstein was apprehended in 1860, so Sangster either retconned the year deliberately or accidentally for the sequel...
Horror of Frankenstein error. It wasn't the good doctor who dumped acid on the creature inside the vat. It was a little girl messing around the lab while the monster hid in there and she pulled the lever to Victor's frustration, as he had a guest he'd been trying to get rid of. The only memorably funny moment in this flick.
I thought i had read that it wasnt a choice to completely remake the design of the Monster but the licensing of the characters and their likenesses wasnt available and as such Hammer had to make sure the Monster bore no resemblance to the Universal Monster.
It's interesting because I don't think any of these are terribly well-scripted movies, but good production design, a couple of good directors and a series of ensembles of very solid actors manage to elevate them. And of course a series of mostly very good lead performances from a brilliant actor.
I watched Curse of Frankenstein for the first time this year, and loved it so much I bought the sequels. I’ve thus far only watched them in release order, but wondered whether the following order might make more narrative sense: Curse Revenge Must be Destroyed Created Woman Monster from Hell
Hi! If this channel is run by (or with) the Michael Price of the Forgotten Horrors books, I’ve been a fan of the series for a long time. I have five or six of them, and I’d love to complete the set in one fell swoop. Must I use Amazon, or can I buy them directly from you? Thanks! And I’ve not yet watched this video, but I’m eager to and I know I’ll enjoy it. For anyone interested, those books are: 1. Forgotten Horrors 2. Beyond the Horror Ban 3. Dr. Turner’s House of Horrors 4. Dreams that Money Can Buy 5. The Atom Age 6. Up from the Depths 7. Famished Monsters of Filmland* 8. The Resurrection of Edgar Allan Poe 9. Ectoplasmic Spasmochasm 10. The Missing Years And several unnumbered titles. * OUCH!
I’m the only one out of my family and friends that really can’t stand hammer horror movies. I’ve never found them scary or even entertaining but hey that’s just me
A series that my wife and I visit annually come Halloween season. We usually have a week each of Hammer Draculi and Frankensteini. I can't disagree more with your negative assessment of HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN. It is obviously not connected, other than by lead characters named "Frankenstein", to the Cushing-led movies; as to whether or not it is funny (obviously, I enjoy the dark humour, especially in the scenes involving the body snatching couple), different strokes.
Hey it's all good. As long as you like it that's all the counts. I think we didn't like it as much cause it sort of course corrected a series that was on a good course (in our opinion of course) But it ultimately didn't work for us, but it def has some fun moments . I think it needed to go further without restraint .

Thank you so much! It's a lot of work obviously to do these, but it's always worth it when we hear good things like this. Thank you again.

You are welcome! We felt the same way too.

He's simply the best. So nuanced and refined.
The Creeping Flesh is not produced by Hammer.

@@goon1500ify 🌟Sir Christopher Lee,starred in 260 movies😁🥳😁My favorite actor of all time 🌟🥨🌟
Don’t forget doctor Who.
Thank you, brilliant! Ahh, such gems.
Extremely well done. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
This was great. I've heard that the Hammer horror movies were good but haven't seen them. This makes me want to even more.
What a treat Mike! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!

@@HudsonMedia The Curse Of Frankenstein 1957,very gory and very detailed vibrant colours 🌹✨🌹
These are very well done!
Thank you very much!
Glad you like them!
My favorite Hammer series by far; a villainous Baron Frankenstein played by Peter Cushing is Hammer at its best
Could not agree more!

It's a very interesting performance when you watch it as a progression of character.
Oh this made my friday
that's cool! Glad you are liking it. This was like our previous Hammer docs, a labor of love.
Great video man!
Thank you so much!

Love the Hammer Films.

LOVED the series you guys did on Hammer's Dracula!
Oh thank you so much! Check out the one we did on Quatermass and Sabata too!
@@cinemaforce1 Will you be doing "The Mummy" too?

I saw The last one at the cinema underage in 1974. I lov ethem all (except one) Great video
Even if I love the different versions, my favorite Frankenstein is Peter Cushing ; he stays the best actor for this character !
He's the best!
AYE, its Grand Moff Tarkin! R.I.P Peter Cushing.
Fantastic Actor Sir Peter Cushing was in*STAR*WAR'S💥A*NEW*HOPE*1977💥💥💥🎇🎇🎇
Nice Job! : )
Love the nod to Top Secret!
Yes! How could I not?
My ranking:
1. Curse of Frankenstein.
2.Frankenstein created Woman.
3.Frankenstein must be destroyed.
4.Revenge of Frankenstein.
5. Frankenstein and the monster from Hell.
6. Evil of Frankenstein.
7. Horror of Frankenstein.
Solid ranking
Hammer is top notch, but I wish they made a couple more werewolf movies in addition to the excellent Curse of the Werewolf to round things out.
Much agreed!~

its on TH-cam and as a bonus on one of the Shout Factory discs.
Awesome 😊
Thanks 🤗
Peter Cushing was a proto-Hannibal Lector in that Dr Frankenstein was the real monster in this series
Oh did not think of that....
The way he forced his reluctant friends and family to participate in his experiments!
Thank you!💀
No problem!!

Agreed. They aren't as hardcore as say the Dracula series were but they def tried to go in very interesting directions instead of wash and repeat.
great.....do more
Taking a bit of break but we shall return!
