Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy: A Retrospective by Rich Johnson
In Blame it on Blaney, guest essayist Rich Johnson examines the rather twisted vision of an older Alfred Hitchcock with his film, Frenzy from 1972. Rich looks at how filmmakers like Michelangelo Antonioni were now inspiring him and how the rise of the Italian giallo begins to mirror the more seedy side of Hitchcock's newfound censorship free style in the 70's.

Iron Eagle III: Aces - A Retrospective
I have a soft spot for Frenzy because it is the first Hitchcock film I saw and, oddly enough, because it is old-fashioned. What I mean is that, apart from the explicit sex and violence, it has much of the feel of the films he made in Britain in the 1930s.
I saw this at a drive in when 8. Made an impact.
Lovely…lovely….lovely….!!! Masterpiece. Great essay!!!
I like how Hitchcock moved away from Hollywood formalism and embraced the fresh vibe of the 70s with his last two filme. To me, both are basically satirical comedies with hip young stars (Bruce, Barbara, Karen) in Family Plot and a great group of British actors for Frenzy. I enjoy them more than some of his 50s films.
Sid Ceasar's character is so annoying in Airport 75!
Thank You! I thought I was the only one who liked this film; I've never understood the hate this film seems to get!
I grew up watching Hammer horror movies on Saturday afternoons and late nights in the 70s and 80s. I think I saw these movies even before seeing the original Universal monster movies and while I still enjoy them now, they will always be a fond memory from my youth. Thanks for the video!
Really! Frenzy. Not “lovely”. Look, Hitchcock was undoubtedly important but he did make some clunkers. The Lady Vanishes. Family Plot. Rope. I know I’ll get bile for suggesting that Vertigo is somewhat incoherent. But then, so is its source material.
Remember - Bob's your uncle
Airport was a CLASSIC film, absolutely one of my favorites in the sequels.
Never got warm with this one, but I appreciate your effort to give more insight into this movie.
I've always had an interest in aviation, so naturally I become a fan of these films. Years ago, I had the opportunity of meeting George Kennedy, Linda Blair and Erik Estrada from Airport 1975, they were all very nice.
Y eah it's all of that but if you're actually like that a 70s misogynist luv how corny that is now nostalgia - then the glass is half full. No problem. But it ain't Chabrol's The Butcher 1975 the banality of the mise en scene was paradoxically more shocking more alienating. More paradoxically Voyeuristic than Peeping Tom? Less is more. Chabrol was often compared to Hitch. Is Hitch over rated underrated ect old question lingering....when the votes are counted.
Nice tonalities in this post . Luv it when life is corny in England 70s bit of class stability . Still amazed they actually show that strangulation scene on TV or used to..... Can Hitch go up against the big ones of his time? Check those Imdb factors for the winner fun list of your choice. Circa 1970 throw in Twisted Nerve . Antonnioni? No flies on Hitch.
Not so cool that you crap on a real series of movies
Awesome series! When movies were worth watching with talented actors and stories
Frenzy is brash, embarrassingly unsubtle and vulgar - the jokes are silly - in addition to the off-putting sexualized violence lovingly gloated over by Hitch - who is showing signs of senile degeneration.
One of the reasons I wanted to examine it.
One of my favorite Hitchcock movies that is unfortunately overshadowed by his classics from the 1950s.
It's a very gritty film in his filmography for sure. I wanted to do this one because its such a outlier
This retrospective of Frenzy [1972] done by a repulsive soy-commie. A rancid cultural-Marxist.
I always considered this Hitchcock's attempt at Italian Giallo! Fantastic essay, thank you!
Very much so!
Don't forget the garlic.
Patroni was the best underrated disaster movie character! 😁
Que buen actor Chistoper Li el único que ne gustaba vomo Vampiro, y no se pir que no ponen sus películas, todas son buenas
The "Airport" franchise were all schlock entertainment & a enjoyable flight of fantasy...even the absurd "Airport '79". 🛫 ✈️.
When those annoying scam telemaeketers call my phone, I tell them my name is Joe Patroni.
I Liked the 1st 2 APs, AP75 being the best, AP77 was somewhat interesting, AP79 was terrible . Casting for AP75 was perfect
The woman in the photo in the video looks like britney spears 😂😂😂
though it was good at the time. maybe i just rented it though. think back then vhs movies some were expensive. over hundred to buy new.
Que coisa mais linda !!!Os cachorros são Amigos do homem... eu já peguei cachorro de rua...
I don't think that Christopher Lee was actually in the Edward Dmytryk film "The Hidden Way" (or "Obsession"). It's certainly not him in the clip shown. He may have in later life claimed to have been in it, but I always took his stories with a pinch of salt whenever he addressed me. Oh, but good videos! I wish that the incessant background synth wasn't there though. It really gets in the way of everything - even being layered over the original film scores.
😮 I think you were hard Sean airport 70 It was one of the first disaster films and nobody had really thought about bringing a bomb look how easy it was to get it on the plane. Some of your comments in this are hilarious but remember in airport 70 the only one to win an Oscar was Helen Hayes which is interesting that she took the glitz from all the other stars in any one of those shows . I'm not sure why you kept bringing up airplane It must have been one of your favorite movies mine it was stupid but that's just me it's 71 years old
The best thing that came from "Airport," was "Airplane!"
Brides is one of the best Hammer films. I'm a fan of Lee, but the Drac sequels were a mixed bag, at best. The last two were crap.
I love the Airport movies and Airplane even more.
I've heard so much about 'Quatermass' so got The Quatermass Experiment / Quatermass 2 / Quatermass & the Pit on dvd. Boy, is this cheap-looking tripe! The stilted acting made me cringe so bad, I couldn't watch it and had to turn it off. I love Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Fly, Tarantula, Them!, Earth versus the Flying Saucers, and War of the Worlds (the original film not the crap Spielberg remake), but Quatermass was just not my cup of tea.
Hi! nice analysis. Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain is indeed a great film. I think Tsui Hark's works are visually stunning and in most cases great films overall. However, sometimes they can end up being pretty disorganized. One small correction: The genre is pronounced wuxia like woo-she-ah not like wushu. Thank you!
This was great. I've heard that the Hammer horror movies were good but haven't seen them. This makes me want to even more.
The Hammer versions are all brilliant and probably improve on the TV versions greatly with excellent compression without losing the ideas. They all benefit from minimal but well done special effects and the Hammer seriousness of tone. Donlevy does a good job but Andrew Kier is better
To be honest, the biggest problem I had with "Lifeforce" was that they showed an airlock on the underside of the Space Shuttle (going in and out through the heat shield) rather than use the lock in the cargo bay. I guess it was easier and cheaper to construct a flat plane with a trapdoor rather than model a full-sized cargo bay for a scene that only lasts about ten seconds.
Interesting/informative/entertaining. Bela lugosi still my favorite Dracula character actor🤗. Enjoy viewing 👀 Hollywood's dental implants of all the Dracula fangs-!!!😳. Perhaps I'll view 👀 a few of these Dracula productions-???🤔.
I saw The last one at the cinema underage in 1974. I lov ethem all (except one) Great video
love them all as a kid made me afraid to fly but still did it as a kid
WE ADORE DRACULA.....
What song is being played at the beginning of this video ?
Quatermass is more cosmic horror than mere sci-fi
The scene with Chappy talking about the young lives lost in Vietnam always hits me in the guts. We had this movie on cassette when I was a kid but not Top Gun so Iron Eagle has always been my go to. Great video sir thank you.
Picture This was narrated by Stephen Bruton. He goes way back with Jeff Bridges, having worked with him in Heaven's Gate. His last work was on the soundtrack for Crazy Heart. Jeff mentioned him in his Oscar acceptance speech.
I’m the only one out of my family and friends that really can’t stand hammer horror movies. I’ve never found them scary or even entertaining but hey that’s just me
I love jacking off to this film. Chingmy Yau was so delectable. I wish she would be my domme.
Your voice bears a striking resemblance to the narrator of David Lynch's Dune. Great content btw
