Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy: A Retrospective by Rich Johnson
มุมมอง 8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
In Blame it on Blaney, guest essayist Rich Johnson examines the rather twisted vision of an older Alfred Hitchcock with his film, Frenzy from 1972. Rich looks at how filmmakers like Michelangelo Antonioni were now inspiring him and how the rise of the Italian giallo begins to mirror the more seedy side of Hitchcock's newfound censorship free style in the 70's. To see more of Rich Johnson's work...

I thought Peter,s wife was called Helen not Violet
Gianfranco Parolini's 'If you meet Sartana, pray for your death + the Sabata trilogy' are my 4 favourite Spaghetti Westerns along with the Sergio Leone and Sergio Corbucci films.
21:14 Cinema Force: How does this happen? How does this get written? Me: Cocaine... it's always Cocaine. it's the 90s, and it's hollywood.. what other reason could it be?
Just finished binge watching all the AIRPORT movies with the exception of The Concord because I just had a feeling it was going to be too corny. Thankfully after watching this video it saved me from wasting my time. I thank you for that.
I love the ocean going Frankenstein. And the original, of course. There is something to be said about getting underway. From ice, in the springtime. "Fetch me my sextant."
Im not really familiar with hong kong cinema, so this channel is invaluable to me. This film looks great! I’ll have to check it out!
Grand Prix like many others of that time is forgotten. Seconds will always have an audience.🪞⏲ Great review, thank you.

You forgot to mention that the guy with the bomb was the absolutely fantastic actor Van Heflin
This is hilarious! You've done just as good a number on the Airport franchise as the Zucker Brothers did with Airplane!... I saw the '75 film when I was a rather dippy 16 year old and, not yet understanding the concept of cash cow formula films, I took too many things seriously. That's why I adored Airplane! It enabled me to correct the record.
I had the Airport Terminal Pack at one time. I believe I got rid of it when Airport came out on Blu-ray. I love the original, but 75, 77 and 79 Concorde were an absolute waste of Kodak Ektachrome film. I can also watch Airplane every now and then but it has to be the right mood. In my opinion the best one was the first one campy plot twists not withstanding.
These are very well done! Thank you very much!
Glad you like them!
Editing and sound design in this review is perfect for the subject matter. Wish I could afford it haha
Thank you so much !!!!!!
Brought this book about six or seven years ago. I'd recommend it. Good channel.

GREAT U-PLOAD THANKS HEY HOW ABOUT EASTWOOD RESCUING THEN BRUCE WILLIS LANDS IN BERLIN WHERE AIRFOCE ONE IS READY FOR GARY OLDMAN
I watched Curse of Frankenstein for the first time this year, and loved it so much I bought the sequels. I’ve thus far only watched them in release order, but wondered whether the following order might make more narrative sense: Curse Revenge Must be Destroyed Created Woman Monster from Hell
This is beautiful.
Interesting sidenote about Concorde '79, the Concorde used in the film is actually THE VERY SAME Concorde that crashed in Paris in 2000.
A fine retrospective! :)
The inspiration for "Airplane" was without a doubt the movie "Zero Hour". Arthur Hailey wrote both the Zero Hour script, and 10 years later wrote the Airport novel. Same flashbacks by the cowardly pilot in Airplane as in Zero Hour. Robert Stack and Lloyd Bridges were composites of Sterling Haydens character, except they were even better. Zero Hour was great as a serious movie worthy of parody and Airplane was that GREAT parody on screen. You MUST watch them as a pair and MUST watch Zero Hour first. Just like "Son of Frankenstein" and "Young FraankenSTEEN.
Even as a young teen this film made a lasting impression on me. Living in Southern California at the time, 1966, I saw the parent generation seeking the Bacanal...

Thanks for sharing your work. I discovered Quatermass with Hammer films. I like them deeply for belonging the few lovecraftian films ever created. Actually, if the author seems not be influenced by Lovecraft work, the pacing of the story, the rationnalist characters facing the outerworld unkown, the slow reveal of an horrific and unspeakable truth far from academic human comprehension of the univers and the history, unimaginable antagonist lifeforms, the insignificance of humanity against cosmic horrors lurking in the darkness of space and time, the reveal of an unknown deadly threat against humanity, ... is truly lovecraftian in spirit.
I loved the original GITS movie and the sequel, but the Hollywood movie bears only a superficial resemblance to the original core story arc, manga or anime. Saying that I did enjoy the Hollywood movie and I liked Scarlet as Motoko. I can understand Japanese but found Aramaki difficult to understand, as did some of my Japanese compatriots. I am not certain why, but otherwise it was a good movie, but nothing deep. It would not take much post-editing to make it a much better movie, but mainstream Hollywood is not really into deep story-arc’s. I found it very sad when Atsuko Tanaka passed away this year, who was the original voice actress for Motoko Kusanagi, rest in peace.
……back in the day, it was rumoured that the Boeing 707 jet used in ‘Airport’ was formerly a QANTAS one………
I found a dvd set about 10 years ago: "Airport: The Terminal Pack:, which has all 4 films, trailers, and the like. Just watched Airport the other day. I'm surprised Dean Martin wasn't in any of the sequels, since he once said that of all the films he did, Airport was his favorite.
Somebody may have already covered this but the airplane movies were not based on the Airport movies. It was based on the 1957 film zero hour. There were a few trinkets of inspiration taken from the airport films. At least enough to get universal to threaten them if they called the movie airplane. Apparently their biggest complaint was the sick girl and the singing nun or whatever she was. The zucker's and Abramson came up with the idea for airplane before they made the Kentucky fried movie.
I love how Hammer Films unite Brits and Yanks across the Atlantic.. A reminder of how we were - at one time - cousins more or less.? Those ties have sadly almost vanished today ....
To me Walter Hill 's 3 Greatest films made back to back Extreme Prejudice 1987 ,Red heat 1988 and Johnny handsome 1989
He was def in the zone.
This video is a fabulous breakdown of a great movie. The finer points you bring up make me appreciate Frankenheimer's work even more, on this and his other films. I will use your analysis to defend 52 Pick-Up to any detractors and will recommend your channel to anyone interested in a better understanding of the art of filmmaking.
That's very nice of you! Thank you so much and glad you enjoyed it!
GREAT BATMAN
Still unsettling today
"Ghost in the Shell" goes beyond anime. It is genuine hard core science fiction, with just a thin curtain of speculation to separate it from our current reality. I've been a big fan since the beginning.
His laugh makes me smile
Alfred Hitchcock's intention was to completely humiliate the ladies. Having Barry Foster leave behind sutch grotesque corpses. BTW Barry Foster's final victim the actress Susan Travers was his first wife in the television series "Van der Valk".
It is a document of a mind we always knew but never wanted to admit.
Hitchcock's treatment of women in his later films (Psycho, The Birds, Marnie, and Frenzy) got more grizzly and graphic and really compromised my admiration of him. He seemed to be getting revenge for his relationship (or lack thereof) with women. Tippi Hedren's account of her experience with the director (both on screen and off) is harrowing. At least in Family Plot, Barbara Harris didn't get killed, just painfully stabbed with a hypodermic needle. She got off lightly.
Yes, Hitch was def putting his perversions out in the open.
I think Kneale made a bad choice in trying to deal with the youth movement for his final Quatermass story. this dates it terribly, and Kneale and his director seemed out of touch with the kinds of details and behaviors of young people, resulting in the kind of fake/inauthentic feeling that sunk so many films produced by older people about the 60's movement that always came off as, well, "off". A charade. Really wish he had gone in another direction as Q4 turned out a very disappointing final entry. Just my opinion, but...I've never come across anyone who thought it was especially memorable like the others.
It certainly is the outlier of the series but its ideas are still relevant considering you replace the hippies with cults. The ending is very definitive .
Every movie you named I have on streaming or DVD/Blu-ray. But I never thought to relate it to the director. I watch Peckinpaugh's "The Wild Bunch" every year I'm home on my birthday.
Most Excellent!
I wonder if the footage of the deleted ending still exists. There is a fascinating documentary titled Kubrick's Boxes in which the filmmakers were permitted access to the storage room where Kubrick kept many items from his films. It must have been amazing to dig through and physically touch some of these items. I wish it would be released on DVD. I found it posted on TH-cam, but it's been since removed. I'll watch anything related to Kubrick and wish that the footage that his daughter Vivian shot for a making-of documentary on Full Metal Jacket but was never completed would get released. I imagine the footage of both reside somewhere on the Kubrick estate, but film does not last forever and begins to deteriorate with the passing of time. What a horrible loss this would be, especially to those of us treasure every image of him at work. I envy those who got to see The Shining when that end sequence with Danny and Wendy in the hospital was still attached. Even though I'm not a great admirer of the film I still appreciate the technical aspects.
For now it seems that those photos are the only existing versions. Apparently Kubrick burned those few prints with the original ending.
So many directors have tried to recreate that scene
Sky baby is a decent band name
I’ve long linked this with Peeping Tom in my mind. At least it didn’t cost Hitchcock his career.
They are certainly linked no question.
Fuck off with your never-ending ads you fucking assholes
Great breakdown, and a nice accompaniment to my first watch of the movie. I’m learning through the different adaptations of Leonard novels that people will be drawn in and remember the big scenes, but the more patience and care is taken with every scene, the more the audience feels and believes in the story
Thanks for the feedback!
A really unpleasant film.
most certainly.
