  • It’s been over thirty years since 1984’s The Karate Kid first left a mark on cinema, turning Ralph Macchio into a movie star and earning Pat Morita an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
    No one could have predicted the impact the movie was going to have at the box office or on pop culture. The movie has had three sequels, and the hit television series Cobra Kai has revived the popularity of the original movie.
    Before this gem of a movie went down in history as one of the best sports movies of all time, it was nothing more than an idea. Here’s the untold truth of The Karate Kid.

    The character of Mr. Miyagi was a staff sergeant in the 442nd Infantry Regiment, the most decorated unit in the U.S. military. The medal he holds the scene is, of course, the Congressional Medal of Honor. Even when I saw the movie in the '80s as a teenager, I thought Mr. Miyagi's scene was the best scene in the movie and really explained why he did what he did for Daniel.

    The WW2 backstory of Mr Miyagi was perfect and it shows how cruel those camps were to the Japanese. After the War and the Japanese were released, they lost their home and everything. The government took all that away and left them with nothing. All their hard work in building their life down the drain.
    Also during WW2 It wasn't just Japanese. Any Asians were affected by and being called Japs and were insulted, pretty much like the Pandemic right now.

A bunch of my friends work on a summer job ( detasseling corn ) made some money to buy movie tickets. Lots of great memories. Life was much simpler as a kid then .

    i loved the karate kid as a kid. The fun exciting moments from the karate action, the music, and a bit of comedy.
    Then as i grew older, as i continue to watch it, not only do I love it, but I appreciate the other finer moments in the movie that I never quite caught/understood as a kid. Made me appreciate the love I have of this movie even more thanks to the dynamic relationship between Daniel-Son and Mr. Miyagi.
    Then of course, a few years passed without watching it again and all of a sudden Cobra Kai youtube show comes around. I literally not only cried due to how awesome this show was and how much love was put into this show due to the creators love of the original karate kid series---I broke down during the grave site scene of Mr. Miyagi. Ahem. What I am just trying to say is that I freaking love this movie and it's sequel.
    As for the 3rd movie, I am just greatly entertained by it's hilariousness and over the top bad guy, Terry Silver.

    i've been watching a lot of karate kid interviews and stuff ever since i discovered the Cobra Kai series earlier this year. Pretty much all of the information in this video is things i've heard the actors explain in interviews that can be found right here on youtube. So the ''untold'' truth of the Karate Kid has actually been told many times ever since Cobra Kai reinvigorated the franchise back in 2018.
    With almost 5.2 million subs, I guess it can be said this channel is probably going to reach a larger audience, specifically those who don't specifically look for Karate Kid stuff like I have.

    • @rumblefish9
      @rumblefish9 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pat gets a lot of accolades (and he should because he was Oscar nominated for the role) but Ralph was equally impressive in the role. Daniel would never work if anyone else played him. Ralph made Daniel relatable but also not a pushover. He was charming, a hot head and he was a natural for the role.

    The part which the music played in this movie goes a lot deeper than just mentioning Joe Esposito‘s performance. It was convenient that he and Bill Conti had collaborated on “You’re the Best” for Rocky III and it was instead held over for The Karate Kid. The parallels between this particular film and the Rocky films apparently motivated Mr. Conti to write another song to be performed by Survivor, “Moment of Truth”. That song isn’t heard until the closing credits, but it is still memorable for including multiple themes that Bill Conti incorporated into the filmscore and being the first Survivor track to feature singer-come-lately Jimi Jamison (God rest his soul).

    I now rate movies by how often I like to watch them. Some "great" movies, I don't really want to see again -- like Titanic. Many films are not so "great", yet I enjoy seeing them again -- like Dogma, or Ex Machina.
    But, a few films, I can watch many times over -- like Maltese Falcon, Astaire/Rogers films, Thin Man series, Connery Bond films, Blade Runner, and all Marx Bros. films.
    Karate Kid is in that category. You can watch this film many times, and it is still entertaining and touching.
