About 25 years ago I finished my basement (first attempt at anything like that) and wanted to do my own taping and mudding but had never done it before. A friend had just done his and it looked like a cake decorator had done it. I didn’t want mine to look as horrible as his. Someone gave me Laurier’s VHS tape. I practised on one small room in the basement by pausing the video, trying the techniques and rewatching it till I got it right. When my mudding was done I wanted to stipple the ceiling so it matched the rest of the house so I called Laurier and asked if I could hire him to come over and do it with his stippler. When he arrived he asked who did my drywalling. I told him I’d done it myself and he was impressed and asked how many years I’d been doing drywalling. I was so proud! I told him only a few weeks. He couldn’t believe it and asked how. I pulled out his VHS and he was overwhelmed that his video had helped me that much. I have mudded for friends and family countless times ever since and told this story countless times. It started out as something that I was scared to attempt (everyone said not to try it myself) but now I absolutely love doing it. My kids all grew up quoting Laurier: “Your mud is your glue!” This past Friday I was helping my son-in-law (who I taught how to mud also) with some drywall and mudding and my 4 year old granddaughter said, “Grandpa is in the basement gluing because your mud is your glue!” I had lost the VHS years ago and was thrilled to see it in its entirety here. Laurier, you’re a legend in my family and I can’t thank you enough for the skill that you so effectively taught me that has served me so well all these years!

Hey John, I'm in a similar situation now as you were 25 years ago: I am in the process of attempting my first mudding. While I am absolutely certain it won't turn out as good as yours, I have a pretty good feeling and am using half my spare time getting inspired by a lot of talented people on TH-cam (thank goodness for high resolution and free content - 21st century has that good). It was daunting to me at first thought, and wanted to have it done by a professional, but since the work has to take place on the second floor (which is basically the kids' own) and I will eventually need the whole floor done (have to replace all of the walls and ceilings because they're made of "temtest" (basically cardboard)), and my gut feeling is not alarming anymore as it used to, I decided to give it a go. Only needs to be good enough, not perfect, and I don't expect nor look forward to ever be complimented by a professional. ;) With my blabbering out of the way, should you have a single advice to give to a poor beginner, outside of the rewatch, meditate, and practice moto which is already my own, what would it be? Like, what would be the single most usefull correction (or perception shift) you gave to your technique which helped you improve or fix an issue?

I wish to show how to make costom crown mouldings around a room, how to transfer mud from a box to a pail and mix it up and how to make drywall light valances that shine toward the costom crown at the ceiling corner. I'm a maintenance tech, and I do a lot of drywall repairs. I'm from the states, I watch the Vancouver Carpenter, he shouted you out in his Hawk vs. Trowel video, I've been skimming through your videos, and the knowledge you have in drywall is amazing. I worked with concrete for 10 years, a drywall knife is weird to me and is taking me a while to get used to. You and VC have made me decide to switch to hawk and trowel. I think I'll be a lot more comfortable. Thanks brother 👊

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! Your words inspire me to find a way to share more improvements that reduce the need for sanding. I started taping when I was 19 years old. It was a three man taping system with a mudbox to apply mud to the tape and 2 guys on stilts, 1 guy puts the tape on every joint and corner and 1 guy taking care of wiping bottoms of walls. I don't have the teem yet to put this video together and I don't wish to tick off the pro tapers who lack confidence in themselves. We all do the best that we can with good spirit!

Thank you Laurier for a great video. I was a Mason,plasterer and drywall finisher. I always used a pan and knoves on drywall which most inour area did . But I had a friend who was a general contractor and he used the trowel and hawk and did amazing work. You are an amazing craftsman my friend !

Great video. I've been doing my own mudding for years as a DIYer. I've found my groove and do a good job. But I'm looking to refine my techniques, get faster, neater, cleaner, less mistakes to have to go back on to fix, this video was excellent for that, lot of tips and tricks etc. Thank you for posting!

Laurier’s teachings are the ultimate and best on taping and filling and all anyone would ever need. I did my entire house following Laurier’s various TH-cam guides that are all consistent and very well demonstrated and explained, the result I got was exceptional. 💯

Thank you! I worked with many passionate drywall tapers over the years. We would compare notes about possible improvements when we would sit down for lunch or coffee breaks. I must give them big credit for their influence on me. They have a lot to do with why I am this way when I work my artistic trade.
@@drywallgall I was taught by an older gentlemen who was great with the hawk and trowel, although this area is not popular for those tools, everyone around here uses pan and knife, North Carolina....lol....but he taught me the hawk and trowel way first, then said if you want to use a pan and knife then that's ok cause you know how to finish now....lol

Just want to say I really enjoy your video's. I'm an electrician but do all sorts of other construction/ remodel work since the early 90's. You REALLY know your stuff! I wish I could work a hawk like you, wish I would have watched this video before I remodeled my sisters basement, more mud on the floor than on the walls haha.
Thanks very much for the informative video! I have been hanging and finishing for the past 13 years. For the past 6 years I've been experimenting with dustless forms of sanding. Just like you, I hate sanding. I've known about scraping, but you reinforced it and added a new dimension. Down here in Trinidad, most proficient finishers don't sand between coats, but they still have to after the final coat. I think I'm at a place now, where I don't even dry sand after the final coat. I use a 3M wet sanding block and I do wet sanding, but for this to work, the mudding must be neat. I love drywalling but I hate dust. Thanks again sir!!

I've done it both ways and I found a 12-14 inch knife and pan easier to master. Much steeper learning curve for using a hawk and trowel. Even after several skim jobs I still end up making quite a mess and way too much sanding. But the end product turns out great.

This gentleman is excellent. Some folks put fiberglass mesh half over the corner bead, half on drywall to reinforce that dissimilar material interface.
The drywall-necessities on the walls in my garage where finished and painted. The ceiling was taped with what looks like one coating. The tape is dried out and loose in numerous places. Should I remove the entire length of tape or just repair the loose pieces as though I’m doing an original taping with mud?
This guy goes straight to the demonstration and explains along the way. While others go through a long story line before doing the demonstration and really bores me to death. I learned a lot by just watching this. However I've done some DIY dry wall and mudding in the past so I picked up some good info along the way. Maybe too fast for some people doing a DIY watching this video for the first time but, practice makes perfect.
I'm in the process of finishing this video. Loving it so far. I especially like his technique and reasoning for tearing the paper on butt joints but I have always heard and read that you can't mud over brown paper because it'll blister. Is that just a myth?
Well done sir, you know your shit! I'm not sure I'd remove paper like that but I do like to gouge and pre-fill. I've even had to remove paper like that down to the rock for repairs, but not as a standard practice. In any case, again, bravo sir; well ahead of your time. Also, a trowel? Can you please tell me why when I paint over drywall mud with a paint roller - it makes the mud peel up with the roller and ruins my work? I have to use a paint brush to paint it before I can roll it. I have tried different products and its all done the same. I am using just plain latex interior/exterior paint and I'm waiting a long time for the mud to dry so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I cant use a sprayer to paint it, and a paint brush is taking forever on a big wall. What to do?
Only one reason I can think of. Whoever coated the walls with mud sanded in between coats (which is a big mistake for many reasons that will only compound your problems) and then didn't use a damp rag to remove the dust. When a skim is applied, even when wet enough, the dust rips the moisture out of the mud and it looses it's ability to penetrate the previous layer. The suction from your wet paint roller will easily reveal this blunder. Never! Ever! Sand between coats. Let's say you had to though. A damp rag does the trick, as long as you keep it clean. You'll find the same issue with your tape bubbling for two different reasons. Mud was not thinned with water or your tape wasn't wet (if you don't like thinning your mud. Or, You wiped too much mud from behind the tape. (Assuming you had full coverage of mud for the tape) Anyway, as per this video, there's no need to sand between coats if you follow these steps. The man knows his shit. (Outside of.. 😁 while I do love a trowel, I'm a knife man 😝)

I have come to realize that when I produced my Art of Taping Drywall . People would give me $20 for the VHS tape. All that information and more is on you tube. They pay me $120 per month for my content. There is no financial value for me to try to share more. I can't afford a new camera. It occurs to me that if some of my subscribers would somehow donate 50 cents or 1 dollar to show me that there is value in what I am sharing whole heartedly. I'm thinking like a child, dreamland. I wish everyone the best success with thier projects just the same!
You might be looking at it wrong. Things are not as linear as they used to be, it quickly becomes exponential. I mean you are a great teacher, a likeable guy and clearly a very skilled craftsman. I think if you started to put out content or even if you managed to do a few collabs with the right people (vancouver carpenter comes to mind) your views and following would quickly rise. Then you add Tik-Tok and shorts, maybe some basic merch eventually and you might not make millions but I feel you might be suprised at the results. It all depends on if you are still hungry for an adventure I guess. It does take a leap of faith. The reason I watch and support a lot of TH-camrs is often times because I like the guy. I'd definetely give you some support. P.S. An idea for a collab with vancouver carpenter is teach him how to use plaster of paris with the mud. He tried it once but I feel it is not in his arsenal at all.

Hi Laurier. I have been watching a lot of your videos and I absolutely love your work. I am trying to transition into hawk and trowl. I am having difficulty picking out the right trowl with the right thickness of stainless. I bought a .4 mm trowl and i think it is too thin. I also have a hard time keeping the outsides of the trowl clean. I know this comes with practice but i would appreciate any direction. Thank you. P.S. I like your trick on peeling the drywall paper first to make the tape inset but I find that when I do it the brown paper bubbles.
For starters, don't be concerned about keeping the trowel clean unless you put it down long enough to dry a crust. My stainless steal Gold Blatt trowels do flex and they have lasted me over 30 years so far. W
Standard 13inch hawk. 10-12” x 4-4.75” stiff trowel (no flex or curve). Gain some experience and you’ll figure out which trowel works better for your hands as everyone is slightly different.
Hello again. I have another question. When you prep your butt joints by tearing the paper, do you ever get bubbles from the brown paper seperating from the gypsum due to the moisture in the mud? I know that is a problem with remodels i do and i have to use gardz. Is it ok because its a fresh tear? Your thoughts and expertise is as always greatly appreciated. Respect and thanks.
I'm not too sure about ripping the face paper off the butt joint. Do you still recommend this? I like to V it with a utility knife and then pre-fill with hot mud.
Assuming that's a serious question. Let's do a thought experiment. What's in between the paper in your drywall? What's holding all of that together? When a building moves during dry and damp periods or cold and hot periods, everything tends to expand and contract. The tape simply ensures that through those processes, the "mud" won't crack because of the glue'☺️ binding it all together.

@@jaketanner109 ..no, not at all. Obviously, the ideal rock job has 0 butt joints. In this situation, maybe I misunderstood. You have to mud and tape every joint because of what I stated. If the rock job is bad, I'll definitely prefill with hot mud after I repair/prep the wall. An ideal job entails a custom hot mud mix and an 8" knife. I'll prefill, bed and first coat flats, inside and externals at the same time. I'm half done before I've started and by time I'm ready to second coat, so is the wall.
@@jaketanner109 ..as an aside. Yes, flexibility is key to avoiding cracks. Vertical rock should never touch a horizontal surface, nor a corner bead, especially the floor. A swelling floor will always pop a corner bead or crack, same with the rest I stated above. Always tape your bead seams as well folks.

Same age as me fella. Am an old plasterer now doing more taping and jointing than spreading as have moved country and times have moved on also.

Admittedly I use tools now to keep me moving, but everything started with the techniques that I’ve learned exclusively from your videos. My family and I thank you for your inspiration.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! Your words inspire me to find a way to share more improvements that reduce the need for sanding. I started taping when I was 19 years old. It was a three man taping system with a mudbox to apply mud to the tape and 2 guys on stilts, 1 guy puts the tape on every joint and corner and 1 guy taking care of wiping bottoms of walls. I don't have the teem yet to put this video together and I don't wish to tick off the pro tapers who lack confidence in themselves. We all do the best that we can with good spirit!

Thank you Laurier for a great video. I was a Mason,plasterer and drywall finisher. I always used a pan and knoves on drywall which most inour area did . But I had a friend who was a general contractor and he used the trowel and hawk and did amazing work. You are an amazing craftsman my friend !

Great video. I've been doing my own mudding for years as a DIYer. I've found my groove and do a good job. But I'm looking to refine my techniques, get faster, neater, cleaner, less mistakes to have to go back on to fix, this video was excellent for that, lot of tips and tricks etc. Thank you for posting!

Thank you! I worked with many passionate drywall tapers over the years. We would compare notes about possible improvements when we would sit down for lunch or coffee breaks. @@drywallgall I was taught by an older gentlemen who was great with the hawk and trowel, although this area is not popular for those tools, everyone around here uses pan and knife, North Carolina....lol....but he taught me the hawk and trowel way first, then said if you want to use a pan and knife then that's ok cause you know how to finish now....lol

I have been hanging and finishing for the past 13 years. For the past 6 years I've been experimenting with dustless forms of sanding.
Just like you, I hate sanding.
I've known about scraping, but you reinforced it and added a new dimension.
Down here in Trinidad, most proficient finishers don't sand between coats, but they still have to after the final coat.
I think I'm at a place now, where I don't even dry sand after the final coat.
I use a 3M wet sanding block and I do wet sanding, but for this to work, the mudding must be neat.
I love drywalling but
I hate dust.

You make using the hawk and trowel look so easy I’m going to be skimming ceilings soon I’ll get some practice
I've done it both ways and I found a 12-14 inch knife and pan easier to master. Much steeper learning curve for using a hawk and trowel. Even after several skim jobs I still end up making quite a mess and way too much sanding. But the end product turns out great.

The drywall-necessities on the walls in my garage where finished and painted. The ceiling was taped with what looks like one coating. The tape is dried out and loose in numerous places. Should I remove the entire length of tape or just repair the loose pieces as though I’m doing an original taping with mud?

This guy goes straight to the demonstration and explains along the way. While others go through a long story line before doing the demonstration and really bores me to death. I learned a lot by just watching this. However I've done some DIY dry wall and mudding in the past so I picked up some good info along the way. Maybe too fast for some people doing a DIY watching this video for the first time but, practice makes perfect.

I'm in the process of finishing this video. Loving it so far. I especially like his technique and reasoning for tearing the paper on butt joints but I have always heard and read that you can't mud over brown paper because it'll blister. Is that just a myth?

I've even had to remove paper like that down to the rock for repairs, but not as a standard practice.

Can you please tell me why when I paint over drywall mud with a paint roller - it makes the mud peel up with the roller and ruins my work? I have to use a paint brush to paint it before I can roll it. I have tried different products and its all done the same. I am using just plain latex interior/exterior paint and I'm waiting a long time for the mud to dry so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I cant use a sprayer to paint it, and a paint brush is taking forever on a big wall. What to do?
Only one reason I can think of.
Whoever coated the walls with mud sanded in between coats (which is a big mistake for many reasons that will only compound your problems) and then didn't use a damp rag to remove the dust.
When a skim is applied, even when wet enough, the dust rips the moisture out of the mud and it looses it's ability to penetrate the previous layer. The suction from your wet paint roller will easily reveal this blunder.
Never! Ever! Sand between coats.
Let's say you had to though. A damp rag does the trick, as long as you keep it clean.
You'll find the same issue with your tape bubbling for two different reasons.
Mud was not thinned with water or your tape wasn't wet (if you don't like thinning your mud.
Or,
You wiped too much mud from behind the tape. (Assuming you had full coverage of mud for the tape)
Anyway, as per this video, there's no need to sand between coats if you follow these steps.

I have come to realize that when I produced my Art of Taping Drywall . People would give me $20 for the VHS tape. All that information and more is on you tube. They pay me $120 per month for my content. There is no financial value for me to try to share more. I can't afford a new camera. It occurs to me that if some of my subscribers would somehow donate 50 cents or 1 dollar to show me that there is value in what I am sharing whole heartedly. I'm thinking like a child, dreamland. I wish everyone the best success with thier projects just the same!
You might be looking at it wrong. Things are not as linear as they used to be, it quickly becomes exponential.
I mean you are a great teacher, a likeable guy and clearly a very skilled craftsman. I think if you started to put out content or even if you managed to do a few collabs with the right people (vancouver carpenter comes to mind) your views and following would quickly rise.
Then you add Tik-Tok and shorts, maybe some basic merch eventually and you might not make millions but I feel you might be suprised at the results.
It all depends on if you are still hungry for an adventure I guess. It does take a leap of faith.
The reason I watch and support a lot of TH-camrs is often times because I like the guy. I'd definetely give you some support.
P.S. An idea for a collab with vancouver carpenter is teach him how to use plaster of paris with the mud. He tried it once but I feel it is not in his arsenal at all.
Get back in the game, make more videos, you could make a very good living from youtube when your channel takes off and I'm sure it would.

Hi Laurier. I have been watching a lot of your videos and I absolutely love your work. I am trying to transition into hawk and trowl. I am having difficulty picking out the right trowl with the right thickness of stainless. I bought a .4 mm trowl and i think it is too thin. I also have a hard time keeping the outsides of the trowl clean. I know this comes with practice but i would appreciate any direction. Thank you.
P.S. I like your trick on peeling the drywall paper first to make the tape inset but I find that when I do it the brown paper bubbles.
For starters, don't be concerned about keeping the trowel clean unless you put it down long enough to dry a crust. My stainless steal Gold Blatt trowels do flex and they have lasted me over 30 years so far. W

Standard 13inch hawk.
10-12” x 4-4.75” stiff trowel (no flex or curve).
Gain some experience and you’ll figure out which trowel works better for your hands as everyone is slightly different.
I have a little bump in the center after three coats. Why.

Hello again. I have another question. When you prep your butt joints by tearing the paper, do you ever get bubbles from the brown paper seperating from the gypsum due to the moisture in the mud? I know that is a problem with remodels i do and i have to use gardz. Is it ok because its a fresh tear? Your thoughts and expertise is as always greatly appreciated. Respect and thanks.
That was my first thought too. Second was the time it took. He commented that he does not recommend doing that now.
I'm not too sure about ripping the face paper off the butt joint. Do you still recommend this? I like to V it with a utility knife and then pre-fill with hot mud.
not anymore. That was a commercial job lesson that I shared but I don't remove anything unless it is loose.

Assuming that's a serious question. Let's do a thought experiment.
What's in between the paper in your drywall? What's holding all of that together?
When a building moves during dry and damp periods or cold and hot periods, everything tends to expand and contract.
The tape simply ensures that through those processes, the "mud" won't crack because of the glue'☺️ binding it all together.

Obviously, the ideal rock job has 0 butt joints.
In this situation, maybe I misunderstood.
You have to mud and tape every joint because of what I stated.
If the rock job is bad, I'll definitely prefill with hot mud after I repair/prep the wall.
An ideal job entails a custom hot mud mix and an 8" knife.
I'll prefill, bed and first coat flats, inside and externals at the same time. I'm half done before I've started and by time I'm ready to second coat, so is the wall.

Vertical rock should never touch a horizontal surface, nor a corner bead, especially the floor.
A swelling floor will always pop a corner bead or crack, same with the rest I stated above.
Always tape your bead seams as well folks.
