    you're talking about a down backpacking quilt. snaps and cinches around your feet like a sleeping bag... open around your shoulders and head like a quilt with no hood. Enlightened Equipment makes down BP quilts, and when I got mine a couple years ago Hammock Gear was a great cheaper alternative. I have a Hammock Gear quilt and it's super light and super warm and cheaper than Enlightened EQ gear. but personally if I had your van, I'd put a fitted sheet around an Exped mattress and bring blankets or an unzipped car camping rectangular bag. and two huge pillows. but that's just me and my pref's.

    • @EverythingsBeenDone
      @EverythingsBeenDone  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you for all the great suggestions here! I should mess with the fitted sheet I just like the convenience of the sleeping bag. It's easy to steal away and it's small big pillows are amazing but they take up so much space I can't bring myself to squeeze them in there.

    For your down bag issue, look into quilts from Enlightened Equipment or other makers. Can be used as a blanket, or as a closed footbox bag that lays flat near your shoulders/torso. You can get them in a variety of weights depending on what you need. Highly recommend. I use mine for both bikepacking and truckbed camping.

    THE answer to sleeping bags: Quilts by Enlightened Equipment (or other brands).
    Used a 20* version of their “Enigma” hiking the PCT from Mexico->Canadá last year. 5 months of nightly use.
    It’s exactly what you’re looking for. Ultralight too because you ditch the zipper (re: bikepacking). Way comfier for people that move around in sleep!

      The EE quilt has a grossly exaggerated temperature rating. Doesn't work out well for hikers or bike packers when it's below 32 and/or the bag gets wet. The true believers will never tell you this though. No way in hell you would want to use an EE 20 quilt when it's 20 degrees, or even 30 degrees. 40 degrees and dry, and yeah, it's pretty good.

    DK- check out ENLIGHTENED EQUIPMENT for a US-made down quilt that can cynch/clip for the feet box but also opens to a full rectangular quilt if you want that. we’ve used it down to 25°ish in a tent and in a van and we cannot recommend enough. I believe they also carry them on GGG (garage grown gear) which is our go to for sustainable lightweight gear. be well!!

    Beautiful place, and great shots of the trees fading into nothing but clouds or fog!
    3:00 Our night vision comes from rod receptors in our eyes along with the build up of the rhodopsin molecule. When in the dark, you might notice you can see better after about an hour - it's because your body has built up rhodopsin. White light causes rhodopsin to break down causing the the rod receptors in our eyes to not function well, which negatively impacts our night vision. Red light is less destructive to rhosopsin, so it is better for our eyes to maintain night vision.
    4:45 I hear you on this point. My sleep-game changed when I started messing around with different layers of sleeping pads. I use a 1-inch self-inflating pad on top of a 3-inch air-pad for backpacking. No more bad sleep for the first night. I'm still working out the combination for the car-camping/camper-van, but so far a memory foam mattress topper over a foam base layer is working well.
    2:25 Aside from the understandable product plugs you do in your videos, try "personal cleansing" wipes if you want to save on money and don't need the "cooling" part of Duke Cannon Cold Shower wipes. As a bonus, one can use the wipes after using the bathroom. I first learned about using these in the field as a wildland firefighter. They were key to keeping us from being terribly stinky and minimized skin irritation that can arise from being too dirty in certain places.

  • @jonabub
    @jonabub 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    sleeping bags without hoods are called quilt. They stem from hammocking adapted sleeping bag systems more or less. they're sought after so very expensive, or they're made in small badges and very expensive, not sure whether it's one or the other or both or none. But since they are expensive I used my old sleeping bag with hair bands to keep the hood off of my face. costs next to nothing and works like a charm. You could use any cord and a constrictor knot to do the same and if you added a loop you'd have something to hang up the bag with.
    Generally I'd rethink down though, in wet weather it sucks. synthetics are better and in the car I'd be using a normal blanket. don't know why you'd want a sleeping bag in there and at this point I'm afraid to ask ...

    Northern Washington just south of Oregon? Have you looked at a map? Well, you did say UNDISCLOSED and it don't get much more undisclosed than that!
    I'm going for a gravel ride this weekend in an undisclosed national forest that is west of California but east of Florida.
    Awesome way to start the vid :)

    Speaking as a new member here -- and thus a player of the first order -- I say what this channel needs is a video glossary. You can explain to newbies such as myself what the heck "chunder" is (sounds like weather but I've also heard you say it sticks to the bottom of the down tube). Then as well you can gently get into any connections between "EBD" and "Emotional and Behavioral Disorders".

    Instead of using a down sleeping bag turned upside down.... there are companies (for example Enlightened Equipment) that make down top quilts... which campers love. It's a warm, down quilt with a footbox and no hood to deal with. Look 'em up. I've used them for hammock camping but your use case is a great fit as well. 👍

    for the sleeping bag... you do what I do... use it as a quilt with a footbox... they sell "proper" versions of that you are looking for a camping quilt with a footbox... sleeping bags are already a waste because the bottom that is compressed under your body isn't providing much if any insulation (which is why a good sleeping pad is important)... some of the better quilts will even have straps to clip to the pad so it doesn't shift around.

    As a PNW (Washington) mountain biker, things I always have in the truck this time of year are: plastic bags for your dirty clothes/gear, sweat pants to put over your dirty lowers, clean hoodie or jacket for your upper body. Towel to protect your interior or wipe yourself off, sanitary wipes are nice too. You’re going to get muddy, that’s a given. It’s your choice to trash your vehicles interior with it. Also clean and oil your bike regularly because mud is like sandpaper to your moving parts I.e. drivetrain and pivot points

    GET A QUILT. I have a hammock gear borrow quilt and it is great, there as warm as a sleeping bag and you can get zip off ones.

    Maybe someone has already posted it, but, for the down sleeping bag with no hood situation, you could look into a down top quilt meant for hammock camping. They have a footbed but the rest is open. They'll generally be just as light if not lighter than down bags and pack down just as small.

    I have a Thermarest Ohm sleeping bag. I like it because it's a sleeping bag without a hood. Also, has a full length zipper to become a blanket. I prefer it over a quilt.

    You need a Karcher window vac for the condensation. Also for safety the carbon monoxide detector should be put as per manufacturers guidelines which is normally just below roof / ceiling level.
