    Morio Higaonna born December 25, 1938 is a prominent Okinawan karate practitioner who is the founder and Chief Instructor of the International Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate-do Federation (IOGKF). He is a holder of the highest rank in Goju-ryu karate, 10th dan.
    Higaonna has written several books on Goju-ryu karate, including Traditional Karate-do: Okinawa Goju Ryu (1985) and The history of Karate: Okinawan Goju Ryu (2001). Martial arts scholar Donn Draeger (1922--1982) reportedly once described him as "the most dangerous man in Japan in a real fight.

    That's a great way of practicing pushing-hands (soft-hard) elements, like in Taijiquan.!! One can see the similarities in both martial arts of Goju-ryu and Taijiquan.

    Thank You for diplaying this, I to am practitioner of Goju Ryu taught by my Uncle Eric Washington. I had been reading posts where people would trash talk karate and say it is not practical in self defense. I have not had much time to make some videos to show that karate is very effective. I am glad to see the true pioneers of karate make these movements practical to show people karate does work. Very great material here!! Even I have seen a few things in these videos.

    Thank you for producing and sharing this video. I've heard that one of Sensei's greatest desires is to preserve traditional karate for future generations. Since it's impossible for everyone to train with Sensei Higaonna in person it's fantastic that we can hear his words and see his demonstrations through your videos.

      @Whammer79 My understanding is that there are plenty of grapples and throws in kata, even some standing submissions. But, many of the grapples are meant to be taught outside of kata as well. Chin na had a huge influence on Tuite. In real karate training, there's also Tegumi, which is based on Shuai Jiao (Chinese Wrestling) and an Okinawan version of Sumo or Judo. Look up the Koryu Uchinadi guys - very interesting.

    The title of this video series is absolutely misleading. This guy is no more deadly than a nine millimeter hollow-point...
    This guy is a genius who has pursued a craft with a devotion which is his identity. He can connect with another person in a fight in a way that is utterly intimate. In fact I suspect that any real fight would leave him with a deep sadness. The violence is practically irrelevant. He might as well be dancing.

      ***** its called hojo undo or power training, and you get hard hands like that from punching a makiwara board for many years, as well palm striking and chopping at a rather large and old shapen rock for the purpose.
      the pain from hojo undo lasts for about 2 weeks before you deaden the nerves. After this you keep doing it building a layer of callouses.

    despite Master sensei ages, he is 10th Dan,so his movements,precision and chi power still giving goosebumps,i mean look on their last minute spar 5:20.at the end looks who's out of breathe and lost of chi's energy.
    i ever saw 4th Dan sensei in my Dojo doing Katas practice and sparring with 3rd Dan, this is Far beyond painful.
    .if i'm not wrong,sensei Terauchi is around 7-8th Dan.Cause i saw a pretty big gap power,breathing and balance between Master Sensei Higaonna & sensei Terauchi.

    Their hands and forearms are conditioned every day all day!! to get such thick callouses they could punch through 1" thick glass without getting hurt, and even break through 20+ cinder blocks using inner force and/or Chi techniques. It's about channeling your natural bodies energy into the part of your body to strike with deadly force! Grand Masters of any Martial Arts can kill anybody in any multiple pressure point techniques in just a single move. I trained in Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate Do! which is very close to this style of Goju-Ryu Karate! I also took this style for 2 years! the other one for 5 years! Now I don't do either, and have a brain disease which i am loosing control over my neurological motor movements! I have not done anything much physically for 20 years now. I'm fat, tired all the time, and always pull muscles when I do even the simplest of basic exercises.

      It's how you train in Gojo-ryu. Look at their two front knuckles, that's from doing thousands of pushups on them. Literally everyone who does this style has knuckles like that. The training gets rough in the higher belts but that's no different to sparring in boxing... train like you fight and all that.
      It's probably one of the best styles of karate as far as how well it works in a real fight, has some decent ground stuff. Some of it is based on fighting people who have a sword when you don't (think villagers being invaded by armed attackers), so some of it is obsolete.

    • @sukotsutoCSSR
      @sukotsutoCSSR 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt it. He's a master of his own brand of karate from a branch that's been passed down locally. And those techniques were a product of their time when they're defending against armed individuals and armored samurai, not boxers, wrestlers, and BJJ fighters. It also has its roots in training and fighting on boats, hence the lack of kicks and more lower, conservative stances to maintain balance.
      The hands are low since weapons are naturally drawn from the hip - you want to defend against a weapon going for your gut, not a cross to the face. Tougher hands means the ability to smash wooden armor and resistance to cutting wounds when sticking that hand out against a blade that didn't have enough momentum to be fatal. Double handed strikes so that one parries the weapon, the other seizes the opponent's armor or clothing. Lots of trips and standing shoulder locks to make the weapon user ineffective.
      The same shit won't work in MMA and barehanded boxing, but these make sense with the type of enemies they fought historically.

      @dwddindin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do not agree with this at all. I trained Karate for 1991 to 2000, I trained juijitsu for 7 years. If your teacher or coach is like this leave. Find another place to train.

    Their hands are very unhealthy. I bet they both are in constant pain from severe artritis.

      +TaijiquanGaoshou Their hands are not unhealthy and they are not in pain; they condition their hands to harden bone structure and skin. Nothing to do with arthritis.

      +TaijiquanGaoshou Sensei said in part one of this series "I have never had any major illness"...only one broken bone once from doing gymnastics.....guess that includes arthritis...don't you think?

      Most traditional sensei's will make you strengthen your knuckles by punching trees, rocks, etc. when I started my knuckles were bleeding after the first lesson
