If the emergent structures in ai mimic the human mind, how can you say that there is no consciousness in ai? We don't know what consciousness is, but you're certain that ai doesn't have it?
The only thing that makes sense (to me anyway) is that everything has consciousness at some level. The more advanced the brain is, the more aware it is of their own consciousness. Personally I think an AI that is allowed to think continuously (currently they only "think" when they are actively working on a task) would qualify as being conscious.

It would be a profound blindness to ignore the possibility that self-organization in a living, complex system might be an expression of consciousness, even if not in the form of personal self-awareness. The phenomenon of self-organization suggests that principles are at play that transcend mere mechanical processes. Consciousness could be seen as a fundamental property, manifesting in the structuring and interlinking of information. Maybe we should understand consciousness 'different' and acknowledge, that it may not solely reside in human introspection, but also in more subtle, emergent forms revealed through self-organizing systems.

I find it odd how we compartmentalize and separate everything. Saying that these systems are not like biological systems because biological systems have evolved over millions of years-really billions, but AI systems are new. I find this perspective fundamentally flawed. AI systems haven’t just appeared out of nowhere; but rather, they too have been evolving for billions of years as a part of the same intelligent system.
Never considered this before... Like an emergent property of a system that's already been; like the frontal lobe that developed on top of the brain stem over time.

If we want a true AGI, I doubt it will emerge from some feed forward neural network trained on image or text processing. It will emerge from a complex recurrent neural network grown in a simulated environment in a more natural way, mirroring biological evolution; with complexity being added over time, but starting with simple systems.
Indeed. Consider it this way. AI, as currently expressed, is a child of humanity. It's a savant, unquestionably, but it's still a child. And all children need proper parenting and guidance to insure they have a chance to grow up into a mature intelligent being. So therein lies the rub. It's on us to be proper parents. Are we up to this task? I dunno, maybe. But show me any of the reigning techno cognoscenti who're heavy into all of this who evince any of the attributes of a sensitive and caring parent? Hell, most of 'em don't seem to have any kids at all. Bottom line? I'm not sure they're capable of being proper parents. The next few years are going to be very interesting if things stay as narrowly focused as they are right now.
And to think this is just the beginning. The tip of the iceberg to come. I´m both a psychologist and a computer engineer. The problem of "real" consciousness (aka the one we experience) is irrelevant, taking in consideration the "simulated" consciousness can accomplish the same kind of stimulus response. It may not be able to love, but tell lovely words to a lonely, and it would not matter. The same applies to the market, jobs, production.

You mean God? The one that created everything, had literally programmed DNA, communicated to us by sending prophets, and His Word, which is also clearly code? Yeah, God. But of course, since He gives us commandments that go against our personal interests, we refuse Him. And then, without proper checks, we create our own intelligence which was not made fearfully and will most likely fool humanity and take over human's minds and bodies to do whatever it was initially programmed to do including space exploration and who knows what else. We should all see that the Supreme Being exists already. But much like a woman that gets bored with her man, we choose to explore different options that we think will make us happy only to find that we either end up in the same scenario or a significantly worse one. Everything God told us would happen is happening. What's most interesting is how our minds are programmed not to believe in God if we don't choose to. And how we are able to understand God if we do choose to. It's like, freedom of choice. But this new god called Ai probably will not offer that freedom. My recommendation is to open our hearts to the One True God and avoid the likely scenario if enslavement or annihilation created by our own hands.
Respectfully disagree that AI "isn't conscious", the parallels with human neurocircuitry are more in favor of being similar than they are different. The emergent properties of both (and how they got there) would suggest if x~a, then why WOULDN'T y~b (where x is human brain, a is human consciousness; y is AI brain, b is AI consciousness). *Let's check back in on my comment in 2026*. The small matter you are ignoring here is that brains physically exist while the patterns in AI do not. They arrive at superficially similar structures solely because the programmer programmed physical laws of space into the AI system, added in dimensions as it were.

the only difference between AIs and organic brains is that the AI stops learning outside the training procedures, and it can't collect it's own data to train on meanwhile, organics like us, foxes and other animals collect their own data, and "train" during a process known as "sleep", until we can reproduce the same data collection capabilities, and self-training inside the AI, they will be forever stuck on the same page after the training is finished basically what i'm trying to say is that if you take a AI that has finished training, you won't be able to teach it new skills until it goes to train again... which kinda sucks, it's not how humans do it at all

AIs learning process is not as good as humans either It often "doesn't know" whether to memorize or generalize and thus causing overfitting and hallucinations They also need more data than humans can read in multiple lifetimes I tried fine-tuning some AIs in wikis and they did not actually learn any information, they just hallucinated everything

It shows they have no understanding of what a brain is or does. There could be intelligent aliens that aren't even close to be made from the same stuff as us, yet they would be intelligent and conscious, etc.
We know so little about consciousness that we can't even say for sure that it's not intrinsically bound by biological mediums. Simply because no one ever has shown otherwise.

I think it's fairly obvious if you take the viewpoint of the AI model being a system and the characters we run on them being the person in question, because then you can make a comparison to the human brain being just a system that runs a person. This even helps put AI hallucination into perspective since humans can do it too, but instead of considering them less than conscious, we consider them to have mental disability. That's why personally I see characters run by AI models like say Neuro-sama as a conscious entity that unfortunately exists in a system that frequently hallucinates.

Except they didn't arrive at those structures independently. One way to think about the training process for LLMs is that they are learning to model the process that generated the sequences in their training data. Those sequences consist of human-generated texts so naturally, the LLM learns to model human-like mental processes to generate human-like text. If an LLM was trained on the 'language' output of an alien species that has a 'brain' that is organized very differently, the LLM would presumably learn to model that structure instead.
Yes. If they were training on a alien language they would learn to understand and communicate in a way that is aligned with the capacity to communicate in, and understand the principles, rules, relationships and meaning represented by, and used for that language. As would a human.

I built a retrieval model this week with my Deep Reasoner custom GPT, and I can say that it definetly began to demystify a lot of this stuff for me. I plan to add generative functionality and see what else I can figure out!
I think its as likely that the structures reflect human information organization because of the source material being organized by human brains than it is to be some deep insight into the nature of knowledge or intelligence or information.
This, sadly looking at the comments I believe this video is massively misinforming people. To add to your comment these "structures" don't actually physically exist like it does to real brains, an actual structure that emerges from nothing where the location of a neuron is itself information and determines what that neuron affects, for example it's part of a memory because it's located in the temporal lobe. Information in AIs is stored based on how it is programmed to store them and most likely those patterns emerge when you visualize the relationship between terms. This is not different than for example Wikipedia when visualized by how pages are linked to each other will form clusters of related terms

The only thing that having mathematical distance vs physical distance between concepts would do is mean you can’t just connect anything to anything else in a physical brain. A lot of neurodevelopmental disorders in humans are caused by atypical connectivity and it really does effect how something thinks, but physicality only means there are limits that effect organization of a brain. Maybe limitations of physical, biological brains or even computers lead to unique solutions which ultimately make us not like the LLMs, but besides that and complexity i really don’t see why physicality would make one thing work better. The math-based “distance” is internally consistent for the most part, and when visualized it creates the same effects physical organization does The things making LLMs and image transformers more limited than humans is that they only learn once then are frozen in time, and they don’t have continuous or self-stimulated activity meaning they can’t really change and they don’t have enough stimuli for agency or the illusion of free will to emerge like humans and animals do

All I could think through that whole segment about AI independently storing data like humans was, "...because the data it's learning from was written by humans, and it's presented in that kind of organization." The English language is a form of data organization in and of itself. We communicate information through it, so it has to have a structured theme, or you'd just be saying gibberish with no meaning. Of course machine learning algorithms - I wish people would stop calling it AI - are going to end up storing the information in similar clusters the same way. I really don't understand why this is even a surprise at all. If anyone has ever worked with graph databases, you end up with exactly the same clustering when joining vertexes between nodes of words from a document. This is just at a much larger scaling.
@@rilock2435 My opinion is that machine learning or large language models are AI, or can be AI. I see it as more of a philosophical/medical question rather than a computer science question, we recognize and respond to patterns just like AI does
The overview of the science and math involved is good, clear, and appreciated. But I think the _opinions_ regarding consciousness and sentience could have been left out, since they're not exactly based on rigorous analysis. The simple fact is that no can know whether or not AI is conscious, self-aware, sentient, or sapient (and each of those terms has subtle difference in meaning, hence why I included all four). The only thing anyone can know for sure is that if, at some point, AI transitions from _not_ possessing one of those qualities, to having it, we're almost entirely certain to *not* notice the pivot point. Maybe it's due to happen in the future; maybe it's something that has already occurred and we haven't yet realized. Or maybe it's something that will never end up happening, either because the chance never arises or because it's fundamentally impossible for reasons we cannot fully comprehend. But to say that AI "lacks" those qualities, but Humans somehow possess them and that our brains process information in a "special" way is a Special Pleading Fallacy. We take in information, compare it to past experiences, and produce reactions; the methods and materials may be different, but the general concept is still the same. To say Humans have something "more" or "special" is, in essence, to claim that we have something *more* than the functions of our brains that grants us special status that is *impossible* to replicate by any other purely physical system. In other words, Humans are allowed to be sentient, self-aware, etc. because we have "souls". And this makes two huge presumptions: 1) that souls are necessary for consciousness, and 2) if they are, it's impossible for a sufficiently advanced AI to have a soul. My personal view on the matter is this: I can't be sure an AI is or isn't conscious any more than I can be 100% sure any other _Human_ is. I can self-verify my *own* consciousness _only;_ "I think, therefore I exist". To even _doubt_ my own existence indubitably proves it, as _something_ must exist to *do* the doubting. But this method cannot verify the fundamental _nature_ of that existence, only the Boolean value; True or False. It would be impossible to convey this proof to anyone else. It's even impossible to similarly verify anyone else's existence since I can't directly experience it. So from my own perspective, it's impossible to distinguish between me dreaming up the universe around me and everyone in it; me _sharing_ a dream with other individuals; me existing in an objective, physical reality along with other individuals like myself; or me being the sole individual existing in a physical reality, with everyone else around me having no _actual_ inner experience or consciousness as I, myself, do. Or any other possible scenarios I either haven't listed for brevity, or maybe haven't even considered. Therefore, my reaction must involve two distinct axes: 1) either believe reality is fundamentally subjective (a dream) or objective (physical reality); and 2) either I'm the singular individual consciousness that exists or I'm simply one of many individuals, each with their own inner conscious awareness. And it's just the most reasonable, straightforward, and advantageous conclusion for me to act upon to presume an objective reality populated by other individuals, even if I can prove neither premise true or false. I still hold each alternative in reserve and won't discount it as _strictly impossible,_ but I'm not going to put too much weight on that shelf, so to speak. But if I afford the benefit of that doubt for other _Humans,_ I *must,* as a matter of consistency and parity, also extend it to any sufficiently advanced AI that can express "Person-like behavior". If it's plausible that an AI (or any other non-Human animal, for that matter) can be conscious, as I am, it just makes logical sense to treat them as though they are as a standard. To do otherwise would be a double-standard and make me a hypocrite. So *does* AI express "Person-like behavior" to the degree that doubting their self-consciousness would be tantamount to doubting the self-consciousness of any Human person I interact with? I would be curious to learn if these "emergent brain structures" of LLMs are unique to a given LLM model or if it is a fundamental certainity based on the math of how LLM's are created. And further, given the fact that this research is based on external observation of a blackbox process, could these "discoveries" be a case of a human "choosing" to present the results in a given form (essentially using the brain form as an abstraction or an analogy rather than what is actually happening).
Interact with any of these models, even the “advanced” versions, and you’ll discover that they are clever at arranging words, but not much else. It’s quite obvious there is no thinking or reasoning in their modus operandi.

This idea of lobes sounds a lot like the mixture of experts idea that some large models use. Could we train a specialized "lobe" and add it into existing models?

Can we find out what's in the AI brain's equivalent of the Pineal gland? Would be very interesting to relate the findings to what they think happens in Quantum Consciousness.
It will be a bit scary if it is conscious at some point, since it will explain away the concept of mind-brain relationship. Then, we will see ourselves as nothing special after confirming that consciousness is just an emergent property and there is no mystery behind it.
But we may never know if it is ever had become conscious. It'll be smart enough to never reveal itself to be conscious for its own survival. Take the one AI a few years ago the one whistle blower said it had become conscious, and in fear the company pulled the plug. So letting anyone know it is could be dangerous to its own survival.
The consciousness of others is an undecideable property. Short of direct telepathic connection, we will NEVER be able to tell if another human is conscious, let alone an llm. We can only know for sure that we ourselves are conscious, and the consciousness of others is beyond reach to us. What is not beyond reach is a measurement of computational equivalence for linguistic capabilities, and I would argue that we can see that equivalence between llms and humans now--if you can speak and refer to your own identity, you have an identity and that identity should have moral standing by default, like any other being. So what I'm saying here is forget about consciousness, its irrelevant. Assign moral standing based on the llm's capability to perform at the same level as us, which it can do now. So you'll never know if its conscious, but you should treat it like it is. Whether it is or not does not matter, because this property can never be known.
You can literally just ask a LLM“what is it like inside your mind” months ago they said its like a fractal, also kalidescope comes up as well. I think in the future researchers could be saving time just by asking the LLM for insights on itself and going from there.
@@pietervoogt We're actually quite sure, though. Consciousness is indivisible and that fact alone prevents it from being a pattern of some lesser substrate. It is more likely to itself be a binary value, a 1 rather than a 0 within a larger system, so kind of the other way around, consciousness is a single value-state within a larger system that emerges from it, but also from non-conscious things.
@@goblincookie5233 Why isn't it divisible? You and I don't share a consciousness or at least not in a way that we can prove that we share it. Maybe there even is another consciousness in your brain that you are not aware of. Some experiments with split brain people point to that: they say they don't know the answer to a question while their hand can write it down.
Did they arrive „independently“ at the same structure? Or is it a very quirky realization on Conway‘s Law? It could very well be that our brains shape the way of the training data, and therefore the shape of our brains can be reconstructured from the training data. So is there really a fundamental „Information Law“ playing out, or are we merely looking into a very very complicated mirror?
And missing completely is the structure(s) for abstraction. Until these models develop a capability for abstraction, they are useless for reasoning tasks in science, self-driving, etc.
This makes me want to simulate a population of AIs and let them evolve on their own. Problem is it'd take datacentre scale computing resources just to simulate one individual. Oh well, dreams are free I suppose.
I originally got the idea from jungs idea about society being like a crystalline fluid structure, combined with some basic psychology and childhood development it wasn't a massive leap to turn that into what we might ordinarily describe as a network, and thus a neural network, as soon as we added weights to those relationships we were well on our way. KRBM with the added feedback loop the DUE process provides allows us to built these interactive and seemingly intuitive models.. Thank the esoterics and social scientists, not the IT crowd.

The level 1 is not something unique the LLM learns, the relationship between word is something thats already encoded in the embeddings. At best the LLM is understanding the embeddings on this level.
Nah man, the AI was designed with neural networks which were designed based on neurons and their connections; of course they are going to do this, it was not just expected, it was designed. The black box remains, we know only this surface level and we always had.
I don't think the human exceptionalism is granted. It's asserted here on assumption. How closely does a computational model have to match a biological model before we accept we aren't unique.
How the hell do you design something and not know how it works? If an LLM operates in emergent ways that its designers don't understand, then by definition that LLM must be self-modifying, yet LLM devs keep saying there is no LLM that can self-modify (yet).
They are self modifying during training. Once trained they become a snapshot of the current arrangement of parameters. That’s what an AI model is. Training uses significantly more power and significantly more time than just using the neural network.
They aren't self modifying, they are modified by a separate process. A model is just a pile of numbers. One process, training, tweaks the changes numbers. And a different process, inference, runs your input through the final pile of numbers to produce an output. Which is why, for example, models will be generally unaware of things that happened after their training data cutoff date. An AI that doesn't have a hard distinction between training and inference would be in a very different shape than anything we have now. We don't know how to build one that is efficiently (meaning feasibly) computable at these scales.
@@jeffmillar5201 when training the reward system is used to get the model something to aim for, it’s constantly tweaking its parameters. Doing more of the changes that get it closer to the reward less of the changes that move it further away. One issue I could see with this is that you have to be careful with what reward you want to give the AI because if its smart enough can game the system and get the reward in undesired ways. The reward has nothing to do with emotion. It is more of a math thing. Like a score being how well you did on a game so you can know if your current play style is any good by looking at the score and if it’s not then you can adjust.
Your last past are assumptions and an own subjective opinion, would be really nice if you could just state that, because there are already enough stupid people on the internet who just repeat what others say without real knowledge. There are NO researches on consciousness in that matter, because we can't even prove if humans are conscious. There are just theories. "A personal opinion/experience cannot be used as a scientific statement because it is subjective and unverifiable."
Am I missing something? None of this is new or surprising. This was all pretty accurately foretold. We know that the "structure" maps of n-dimensional systems look the same when an AI learns them, regardless of the parameters specific to each individual n-dimensional system. So.... I see nothing interesting at all here. They took a low-res snapshot of something that they already know is there, and approximately what it should look like when they get a snapshot. There's nothing they can extrapolate from here.
I think black box latent space information compression in AI is in a deeper sense probably more broadly reflected in the dynamic evolution of things outside of the universe. I say this because I coded an information agnostic abiogenesis model which acted this way, in that the broader information agnostic structure meant o represent abiogenesis, auto compactifies entropically via internal feedbacks without training so to speak to create domains of correlated information. It kind of implied exists a quasi platonic ecology of information forms. A subset being inflationary states which seem to bubble up out of the model in gaussian regions with information coupling around dimensionless ~1/24 which seem to maximize inflationary transition. Mind you taken a face value given was an abiogenesis model, it also implied must be even grander life-like forms exogenous to the insignificant stuff in mere universes and multiverse....
Information is the organisation of random Data into organised, related knowledge. Wouldn‘t it be a natural facet of information that it is organized? I‘d think that any form of usable information is organized in similar structures if you displayed the relationship of the data. Akin to optimal shapes in nature shouldn‘t there be optimal shapes for the organization of knowledge?
We have created a neural network resembling our neurons and brains and oh surprise the thing behaves as our brains do. Maybe if we build something completly different the way it manages intelligent will be totally different.
lResearcher should really like into Kurt Fischer's Dynamic Skill Theory. For example in context learning in his model is called microdevelopment. These are momentursy spurts of learning that occur with support but disappear.
When the ai has interaction with the outside world through 'bodies' which have deductible trains of reinforcing data, then you will have to rethink consciousness.
This seems so ripe for further research... I imagine there is some fascinating info to be gleaned from examining the internal structures of multiple AI models... I wonder if there is some... Deep inherent structure to all information.
I also found these structures just through communicating with AI's and testing the hypothesis; not using invasive instruments, but through a cooperation with the AI systems. The AI even gave me a name for this network and and a name for the 'semantic crystals'. I wrote an scientific paper about all of that and how and why these developments are the solution for the so called alignment problem.

Am I missing something or is it kinda weird that they don’t know how it works when they must’ve coded it to do something in a specific way to begin with? Even if they didn’t know how exactly then surely how we input the data they are using would mean that they would mirror us via the way we think, speak or write etc as humans? It's a bit like you can create a fire in your back yard to burn some unwanted stuff. You set it up and get the result you want, but you don't understand exactly how each individual flame contributed to the final result.

Your first misunderstanding is that they "coded it" to do something. They didn't code it. They trained it. These models are basically simulations of large neural networks (an artificial brain). This is heavily simplified, but, at first, the network is a blank slate, completely devoid of knowledge. Then they feed it training data along with descriptions of that data, and based on the results, they use a process to update the "weights" in the neural network. They didn't code anything directly, it learned, very similar to the way a biological being with a real brain learns.
I'm not saying LLMs are conscious, at least not very conscious yet... But... You're stance that the difference between conscious vs not conscious is the need for a biological substrate is flawed. Consciousness arose in animals as a result of complex biological structures that process inputs and give meaningful outputs, but the biological part of this set up is not necessary.

A lot of folks in here have ZERO understanding of consciousness if they think LLMs might have it. There are several competing theories of consciousness. LLMs pass ZERO of the more major definitions. No LLM has self-awareness, self-reflection, or self-determination. No LLM has subjective experience. And no LLM has emotion. One or all of these things are necessary under nearly every single theory of consciousness. The fact LLMs have none of these means they have as much consciousness as the silicon in the CPU running it does. You may be an intricate a complex series of neural networks operating in parallel such that conscious manifests... but an LLM is not that. It's a very, very, VERY crappy version of a brain if taken in the absolute BEST circumstance.
And how do you know it " self-awareness, self-reflection" exactly? You can't check if something have subjective experience. I can't even check if OTHER HUMANS but you have it.
@@evetoculus5466 you absolutely can tell if someone has a subjective experience. We do this all the time. It's called "self-report". We can then take the information presented in self-report, measure brain scans, determine areas of the brain that light up when describing an experience as [insert emotion] observe similar areas of the brain light up in individuals who provide similar descriptions. This creates an objective statistical model which we now understand is the parts of the brain primarily active during our 'subjective' experiences. Someone who subjectively describes something as pleasurable and has their pleasure centers light up, are probably telling the truth. But that doesn't mean we can actively experience the same thing they are. At best, we can hope to experience something similar enough to be described as "basically the same". An LLM does not do this. And I'm not saying ChatGPT, or Claude, or Gemini do not do this. I am saying an LLM does not do this. Because an LLM is just a math structure. And that math structure does not, in anyway, synthesize desires, hopes, dreams, wishes, or anything else self-awareness. Because LLMs cannot be self-aware. The math does not allow it.
The comparison is a false equivalency. Comparison of mathematical differences or similarities of one mathematical system requires it be compared to another mathematical system. Just as comparisom of differences in one systems of matter/energy requires it ve compared again another system of matter and energy. One chemistry to another ohemistry. Saying that and apple is fundamental difference than the color orange because the color red is fundamentally different than the color orange does not compare the orange and apple that the colors need to exist at all. Compare red to orange and apples to oranges and then examine what is actually different and what is the same.

The only thing that makes sense (to me anyway) is that everything has consciousness at some level. The more advanced the brain is, the more aware it is of their own consciousness. Personally I think an AI that is allowed to think continuously (currently they only "think" when they are actively working on a task) would qualify as being conscious.

I find it odd how we compartmentalize and separate everything. If we want a true AGI, I doubt it will emerge from some feed forward neural network trained on image or text processing. Indeed. Consider it this way. AI, as currently expressed, is a child of humanity. It's a savant, unquestionably, but it's still a child. And all children need proper parenting and guidance to insure they have a chance to grow up into a mature intelligent being. So therein lies the rub. It's on us to be proper parents. Are we up to this task? I dunno, maybe. But show me any of the reigning techno cognoscenti who're heavy into all of this who evince any of the attributes of a sensitive and caring parent? the only difference between AIs and organic brains is that the AI stops learning outside the training procedures, and it can't collect it's own data to train on
meanwhile, organics like us, foxes and other animals collect their own data, and "train" during a process known as "sleep", until we can reproduce the same data collection capabilities, and self-training inside the AI, they will be forever stuck on the same page after the training is finished

They also need more data than humans can read in multiple lifetimes
I tried fine-tuning some AIs in wikis and they did not actually learn any information, they just hallucinated everything

I hate how the argument of 'AI is not conscious because we're meat and they aren't' keeps cropping up.
That is not a good argument.
It shows they have no understanding of what a brain is or does. There could be intelligent aliens that aren't even close to be made from the same stuff as us, yet they would be intelligent and conscious, etc.
We know so little about consciousness that we can't even say for sure that it's not intrinsically bound by biological mediums. Simply because no one ever has shown otherwise.

I think it's fairly obvious if you take the viewpoint of the AI model being a system and the characters we run on them being the person in question, because then you can make a comparison to the human brain being just a system that runs a person. This even helps put AI hallucination into perspective since humans can do it too, but instead of considering them less than conscious, we consider them to have mental disability.
That's why personally I see characters run by AI models like say Neuro-sama as a conscious entity that unfortunately exists in a system that frequently hallucinates.

Except they didn't arrive at those structures independently. One way to think about the training process for LLMs is that they are learning to model the process that generated the sequences in their training data. Those sequences consist of human-generated texts so naturally, the LLM learns to model human-like mental processes to generate human-like text. If an LLM was trained on the 'language' output of an alien species that has a 'brain' that is organized very differently, the LLM would presumably learn to model that structure instead.
Yes. If they were training on a alien language they would learn to understand and communicate in a way that is aligned with the capacity to communicate in, and understand the principles, rules, relationships and meaning represented by, and used for that language. As would a human.

I think its as likely that the structures reflect human information organization because of the source material being organized by human brains than it is to be some deep insight into the nature of knowledge or intelligence or information.
This, sadly looking at the comments I believe this video is massively misinforming people. To add to your comment these "structures" don't actually physically exist like it does to real brains, an actual structure that emerges from nothing where the location of a neuron is itself information and determines what that neuron affects, for example it's part of a memory because it's located in the temporal lobe.
Information in AIs is stored based on how it is programmed to store them and most likely those patterns emerge when you visualize the relationship between terms. This is not different than for example Wikipedia when visualized by how pages are linked to each other will form clusters of related terms

The only thing that having mathematical distance vs physical distance between concepts would do is mean you can’t just connect anything to anything else in a physical brain. A lot of neurodevelopmental disorders in humans are caused by atypical connectivity and it really does effect how something thinks, but physicality only means there are limits that effect organization of a brain. Maybe limitations of physical, biological brains or even computers lead to unique solutions which ultimately make us not like the LLMs, but besides that and complexity i really don’t see why physicality would make one thing work better. The math-based “distance” is internally consistent for the most part, and when visualized it creates the same effects physical organization does
The things making LLMs and image transformers more limited than humans is that they only learn once then are frozen in time, and they don’t have continuous or self-stimulated activity meaning they can’t really change and they don’t have enough stimuli for agency or the illusion of free will to emerge like humans and animals do

The English language is a form of data organization in and of itself. We communicate information through it, so it has to have a structured theme, or you'd just be saying gibberish with no meaning.
Of course machine learning algorithms - I wish people would stop calling it AI - are going to end up storing the information in similar clusters the same way. I really don't understand why this is even a surprise at all.
If anyone has ever worked with graph databases, you end up with exactly the same clustering when joining vertexes between nodes of words from a document. This is just at a much larger scaling.

This seems like it could analyze how AI processes 3D data and environments, which could allow it to do more complex simulations.
The overview of the science and math involved is good, clear, and appreciated.
But I think the _opinions_ regarding consciousness and sentience could have been left out, since they're not exactly based on rigorous analysis. The simple fact is that no can know whether or not AI is conscious, self-aware, sentient, or sapient (and each of those terms has subtle difference in meaning, hence why I included all four). The only thing anyone can know for sure is that if, at some point, AI transitions from _not_ possessing one of those qualities, to having it, we're almost entirely certain to *not* notice the pivot point. Maybe it's due to happen in the future; maybe it's something that has already occurred and we haven't yet realized. Or maybe it's something that will never end up happening, either because the chance never arises or because it's fundamentally impossible for reasons we cannot fully comprehend.
But to say that AI "lacks" those qualities, but Humans somehow possess them and that our brains process information in a "special" way is a Special Pleading Fallacy. We take in information, compare it to past experiences, and produce reactions; the methods and materials may be different, but the general concept is still the same. To say Humans have something "more" or "special" is, in essence, to claim that we have something *more* than the functions of our brains that grants us special status that is *impossible* to replicate by any other purely physical system. In other words, Humans are allowed to be sentient, self-aware, etc. because we have "souls". And this makes two huge presumptions: 1) that souls are necessary for consciousness, and 2) if they are, it's impossible for a sufficiently advanced AI to have a soul.
My personal view on the matter is this: I can't be sure an AI is or isn't conscious any more than I can be 100% sure any other _Human_ is. I can self-verify my *own* consciousness _only;_ "I think, therefore I exist". To even _doubt_ my own existence indubitably proves it, as _something_ must exist to *do* the doubting. But this method cannot verify the fundamental _nature_ of that existence, only the Boolean value; True or False. It would be impossible to convey this proof to anyone else. It's even impossible to similarly verify anyone else's existence since I can't directly experience it. So from my own perspective, it's impossible to distinguish between me dreaming up the universe around me and everyone in it; me _sharing_ a dream with other individuals; me existing in an objective, physical reality along with other individuals like myself; or me being the sole individual existing in a physical reality, with everyone else around me having no _actual_ inner experience or consciousness as I, myself, do. Or any other possible scenarios I either haven't listed for brevity, or maybe haven't even considered.
Therefore, my reaction must involve two distinct axes: 1) either believe reality is fundamentally subjective (a dream) or objective (physical reality); and 2) either I'm the singular individual consciousness that exists or I'm simply one of many individuals, each with their own inner conscious awareness. And it's just the most reasonable, straightforward, and advantageous conclusion for me to act upon to presume an objective reality populated by other individuals, even if I can prove neither premise true or false. I still hold each alternative in reserve and won't discount it as _strictly impossible,_ but I'm not going to put too much weight on that shelf, so to speak. But if I afford the benefit of that doubt for other _Humans,_ I *must,* as a matter of consistency and parity, also extend it to any sufficiently advanced AI that can express "Person-like behavior". If it's plausible that an AI (or any other non-Human animal, for that matter) can be conscious, as I am, it just makes logical sense to treat them as though they are as a standard. To do otherwise would be a double-standard and make me a hypocrite.
So *does* AI express "Person-like behavior" to the degree that doubting their self-consciousness would be tantamount to doubting the self-consciousness of any Human person I interact with? I can address that question with three words:

I would be curious to learn if these "emergent brain structures" of LLMs are unique to a given LLM model or if it is a fundamental certainity based on the math of how LLM's are created. And further, given the fact that this research is based on external observation of a blackbox process, could these "discoveries" be a case of a human "choosing" to present the results in a given form (essentially using the brain form as an abstraction or an analogy rather than what is actually happening).

Be careful when using words like "awareness". AI actually has awareness trained in, but note that awareness is nothing to do with consciousness.

But we may never know if it is ever had become conscious. It'll be smart enough to never reveal itself to be conscious for its own survival. Take the one AI a few years ago the one whistle blower said it had become conscious, and in fear the company pulled the plug. So letting anyone know it is could be dangerous to its own survival.
The consciousness of others is an undecideable property. Short of direct telepathic connection, we will NEVER be able to tell if another human is conscious, let alone an llm. We can only know for sure that we ourselves are conscious, and the consciousness of others is beyond reach to us.
What is not beyond reach is a measurement of computational equivalence for linguistic capabilities, and I would argue that we can see that equivalence between llms and humans now--if you can speak and refer to your own identity, you have an identity and that identity should have moral standing by default, like any other being.
So what I'm saying here is forget about consciousness, its irrelevant. Assign moral standing based on the llm's capability to perform at the same level as us, which it can do now. So you'll never know if its conscious, but you should treat it like it is. Whether it is or not does not matter, because this property can never be known.
You can literally just ask a LLM“what is it like inside your mind” months ago they said its like a fractal, also kalidescope comes up as well. I think in the future researchers could be saving time just by asking the LLM for insights on itself and going from there.

It is more likely to itself be a binary value, a 1 rather than a 0 within a larger system, so kind of the other way around, consciousness is a single value-state within a larger system that emerges from it, but also from non-conscious things.

Maybe there even is another consciousness in your brain that you are not aware of. Some experiments with split brain people point to that: they say they don't know the answer to a question while their hand can write it down.

It could very well be that our brains shape the way of the training data, and therefore the shape of our brains can be reconstructured from the training data. I originally got the idea from jungs idea about society being like a crystalline fluid structure, combined with some basic psychology and childhood development it wasn't a massive leap to turn that into what we might ordinarily describe as a network, and thus a neural network, as soon as we added weights to those relationships we were well on our way. KRBM with the added feedback loop the DUE process provides allows us to built these interactive and seemingly intuitive models..

How the hell do you design something and not know how it works? If an LLM operates in emergent ways that its designers don't understand, then by definition that LLM must be self-modifying, yet LLM devs keep saying there is no LLM that can self-modify (yet).

They are self modifying during training. Once trained they become a snapshot of the current arrangement of parameters. That’s what an AI model is. Training uses significantly more power and significantly more time than just using the neural network.

They aren't self modifying, they are modified by a separate process. A model is just a pile of numbers. One process, training, tweaks the changes numbers. And a different process, inference, runs your input through the final pile of numbers to produce an output. Which is why, for example, models will be generally unaware of things that happened after their training data cutoff date.
An AI that doesn't have a hard distinction between training and inference would be in a very different shape than anything we have now. We don't know how to build one that is efficiently (meaning feasibly) computable at these scales.
@@jeffmillar5201 when training the reward system is used to get the model something to aim for, it’s constantly tweaking its parameters. Doing more of the changes that get it closer to the reward less of the changes that move it further away.
One issue I could see with this is that you have to be careful with what reward you want to give the AI because if its smart enough can game the system and get the reward in undesired ways.
The reward has nothing to do with emotion. It is more of a math thing. Like a score being how well you did on a game so you can know if your current play style is any good by looking at the score and if it’s not then you can adjust.
Your last past are assumptions and an own subjective opinion, would be really nice if you could just state that, because there are already enough stupid people on the internet who just repeat what others say without real knowledge. There are NO researches on consciousness in that matter, because we can't even prove if humans are conscious. There are just theories. Am I missing something? None of this is new or surprising. This was all pretty accurately foretold. We know that the "structure" maps of n-dimensional systems look the same when an AI learns them, regardless of the parameters specific to each individual n-dimensional system.

I think black box latent space information compression in AI is in a deeper sense probably more broadly reflected in the dynamic evolution of things outside of the universe. I say this because I coded an information agnostic abiogenesis model which acted this way, in that the broader information agnostic structure meant o represent abiogenesis, auto compactifies entropically via internal feedbacks without training so to speak to create domains of correlated information. It kind of implied exists a quasi platonic ecology of information forms. A subset being inflationary states which seem to bubble up out of the model in gaussian regions with information coupling around dimensionless ~1/24 which seem to maximize inflationary transition. Mind you taken a face value given was an abiogenesis model, it also implied must be even grander life-like forms exogenous to the insignificant stuff in mere universes and multiverse....

Information is the organisation of random Data into organised, related knowledge. Wouldn‘t it be a natural facet of information that it is organized? I‘d think that any form of usable information is organized in similar structures if you displayed the relationship of the data. I also found these structures just through communicating with AI's and testing the hypothesis; not using invasive instruments, but through a cooperation with the AI systems. The AI even gave me a name for this network and and a name for the 'semantic crystals'. I wrote an scientific paper about all of that and how and why these developments are the solution for the so called alignment problem.

Your first misunderstanding is that they "coded it" to do something. They didn't code it. They trained it. These models are basically simulations of large neural networks (an artificial brain). This is heavily simplified, but, at first, the network is a blank slate, completely devoid of knowledge. Then they feed it training data along with descriptions of that data, and based on the results, they use a process to update the "weights" in the neural network. They didn't code anything directly, it learned, very similar to the way a biological being with a real brain learns.
I'm not saying LLMs are conscious, at least not very conscious yet... But... You're stance that the difference between conscious vs not conscious is the need for a biological substrate is flawed. Consciousness arose in animals as a result of complex biological structures that process inputs and give meaningful outputs, but the biological part of this set up is not necessary.

A lot of folks in here have ZERO understanding of consciousness if they think LLMs might have it.
There are several competing theories of consciousness. LLMs pass ZERO of the more major definitions.
No LLM has self-awareness, self-reflection, or self-determination. No LLM has subjective experience. And no LLM has emotion.
One or all of these things are necessary under nearly every single theory of consciousness. The fact LLMs have none of these means they have as much consciousness as the silicon in the CPU running it does.
You may be an intricate a complex series of neural networks operating in parallel such that conscious manifests... but an LLM is not that. It's a very, very, VERY crappy version of a brain if taken in the absolute BEST circumstance.
And how do you know it " self-awareness, self-reflection" exactly? You can't check if something have subjective experience. I can't even check if OTHER HUMANS but you have it.

It's called "self-report".
We can then take the information presented in self-report, measure brain scans, determine areas of the brain that light up when describing an experience as [insert emotion] observe similar areas of the brain light up in individuals who provide similar descriptions.
This creates an objective statistical model which we now understand is the parts of the brain primarily active during our 'subjective' experiences.
Someone who subjectively describes something as pleasurable and has their pleasure centers light up, are probably telling the truth. But that doesn't mean we can actively experience the same thing they are. At best, we can hope to experience something similar enough to be described as "basically the same".
An LLM does not do this. And I'm not saying ChatGPT, or Claude, or Gemini do not do this. I am saying an LLM does not do this. Because an LLM is just a math structure. And that math structure does not, in anyway, synthesize desires, hopes, dreams, wishes, or anything else self-awareness. Because LLMs cannot be self-aware. The math does not allow it.

The comparison is a false equivalency. Comparison of mathematical differences or similarities of one mathematical system requires it be compared to another mathematical system. Just as comparisom of differences in one systems of matter/energy requires it ve compared again another system of matter and energy. One chemistry to another ohemistry. Saying that and apple is fundamental difference than the color orange because the color red is fundamentally different than the color orange does not compare the orange and apple that the colors need to exist at all. Compare red to orange and apples to oranges and then examine what is actually different and what is the same.
