There are many cotton yarns of higher quality than Sugar n Cream or Peaches and Cream. If that’s the only cotton you’ve used, don’t feel all the cotton out there is the same way. Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Cotton” is soft and doesn’t hurt your hands to use. Many other brands out there soft to use too. I agree with you that cotton looks good worked up!! It is actually my favorite yarn to work with. Especially like it for amigurumi because it’s not stretchy, so your sts stay in place and it’s easier to stuff than acrylic yarn.
"Granny" here representing-I love your patterns as well as Complicated Knots' ! I crochet lots of African Flower Animals, their modular design reminds me of my other passion, origami. I am so relieved to hear someone else loving good old worsted type yarn, the hating on it was getting annoying. Your patterns are amazing and I hope to be able to purchase one soon. Love your originality!
I am def a Baby Boomer, and all anyone ever crocheted was Granny Squares. I learned granny squares and after one blanket, I have not made a granny square since 1978…. Now I have made squares into blankets, but not one stinking granny square will ever come from these fingers again. Your work is spectacular! Never change your technique, it is wonderful and refreshing!
Yes!! (Elder millennial here.) When I first started learning to crochet in the mid 90s, I learned from two different people, in person. For many years, I could only single crochet (in rows) or make granny squares. So for many years, the only things I tried to make were afghan blankets, or drawstring bags. In the 2010s, I first discovered TH-cam crochet tutorials. My repertoire just EXPLODED after that! I don’t think I’ve made a granny square since, either! 😅
The whole thing about cutesy stuffed animals just reminded me of my own hot take. Those "sell well" patterns on tiktok (the blueberry cow, the leggy frog, the octopus/jellyfish, etc) are so freaking overrated. I'm so freaking sick of seeing the same 9 or 10 patterns done in the same yarn to the same music with a different face. I'm so sick of them. Your patterns are so refreshing because not only do I like prehistoric life, but they're new! They're interesting! It's a new shape to play with! New techniques to learn! Also I highly recommend incorporating little bits of needle felting into your pieces! I used it once for the face of a life-sized sinosauropteryx I made to get the eye markings and such right. A little bit went a long way! I used the brushed-out leftover fluff from one of the yarns I used as the feathering on the face so it matched and it looked so well
I'm 100% with you!! I feel like after a while a lot of those cutesy animals become run of the mill mainstream designs that get so tired and boring. Those tend to be the designs that get ripped off by copycats too so they end up getting even more overdone. I'm happy to hear that you enjoy my patterns! When I first saw your Sinosauropteryx my jaw dropped!! It is a true work of art! I will definitely have to try needle felting. I would never have thought of using yarn fluff for it, that's absolutely genius! Do you have a needle felting tool that you use?
@KatyasYarnBois just a needle felting needle i got from Micheal's for $2.79 lol. I didn't even really know what I was doing - i kinda just started stabbing and hoped for the best 😅 i would highly recommend some kind of gloves and buying extra needles, though. They will break regularly and you will get cut a few times. I also grabbed some extra wool just in case and used it as the base upon which to build the colorwork, if that makes sense. Thanks for the kind words too! I love her very much
I often tell my tween daughter how baffling it is to me how different we are in our preferences. I'm in my 40s. I call them stuffed animals, I prefer the non chenille yarns, I don't like the glitter eyes, etc. She calls them stuffies, loves the plush yarn, loves the huge glitter eyes.
I love that lol. I definitely feel like there's a generational component to it! Your daughter's preferences definitely match the kinds of stuffed animals that I see as being popular now. A large portion of my audience and customer base are elder Gen Z to elder Millennial, and my theory is that it's because we grew up with a totally different style!
Yeah plushie and stuffie newer words here in the UK too. But we never called them stuffed animals either. We called them soft toys or cuddly toys. I can cope with the word plushie - but stuffie... in uk stuffy means up tight or blocked , and in terms of toys makes me just think of the process of stuffing something lol...not that appealing but i think that's a uk/us language thing and I absolutely love those differences 😂😂😂
I'm so glad it's not just me! Soft toys makes total sense though, I can respect that one. I'm a big language buff so I love learning about the dialectical differences of English!
Loved this video! So interesting on your thoughts about "stuffed animal" "plushie" and "stuffie"! I am around your age, and I also grew up with the good old stuffed animasl, I still have some of mine ❤ I also grew up saying "stuffed animal" but i am ok with "stuffies" or "plushie," I agree with "plushies" I tend to think of simpler designs. I love me a squishmallow but i don't think of them the same as my older or more realistic stuffies 😊 corporate plushies do look like they're on something 😂 but i also like glitter, but they don't ALL need to be that way lol!
This Granny would love to crochet your stuffed animals !. .. I think the name "plushy" and "stuffies" is for the crocheted toys/animals that are made with the chenille, and blanket yarns. (the ones that everyone seems to be making now)
Yeah I've been a tester in a past life and had positive and negative experiences with designers. I'm always super like "hey maybe it's just me" but have gotten shit attitude. Blocked on Ravelry. Magic ring has actually been around since at least 2009-ish (based on where I was living when I was wanting to make a cute little elephant). Or at least when I came across a pattern/blog post that was a struggle bus and a half to learn written with 5 megapixel photos. I was shocked how popular it's become lately when I feel down the crochet-tube rabbit hole. It took me a while to get out of the CH2 habit, but I figured it out eventually and also figured out what works best for me even if it's not *technically* a correct magic ring.
If you make a video about pattern making, I'd love to hear about how you personally went about finding testers! I want to get into making my own patterns too eventually and the only way I can think of how to attain pattern testers is to make posts in various crochet forums I'm in. This is mainly bc I do not have a following for my crochet or anything, I'd assume that having a pre-existing following helps a lot for finding people! Anyways, that's just something I'd love to hear about from you. Much love! 🫶🏻
Love your crocheted animals. I never did like that, might be I will try. I’ve been crocheting for 15 years and I’m doing clothing like skirts, blouse, dress, cardigan and many more. My grandmother was a fantastic crocheter with laces like an Irish lace. I never did lace but I am planning to do so.
Congrats on sharing your opinions even tho it was so scary for you! As a plushie and no-sew lover I definitely understand what you mean about limiting my skills. Studying (yep, not just reading) your pattern book and watching your videos has helped me a lot with learning diffrent technics. I'm trying your backwards method on my latest pattern and it does make a difference in short rows. No idea how am I going to explain that in a written pattern, but I'll figure it out. I would definitly love to see the video about pattern tesing and how to be more helpful.
That's awesome I'm happy to hear that!! Regarding short rows, I actually saw someone recently borrow the knitting term "purl" to explain it in patterns and I thought that was genius. For all of the rows worked backwards, they would write something like "purl: sc 24". You could also just include an explanation on it in a separate document full of helpful tips, or at the beginning of the pattern in a technique section! But yes, explaining it in writing is tricky!
I love crocheting and sewing parts together. My mum in law thinks it’s a granny thing and she is in her 80s and can’t crochet. However when she needs a crochet piece , she comes to me. Lol
Thank you for sharing your hot takes, and please do that pattern testing video! It’s so hard not to take things personally, but it’s mutualism in that designers get (hopefully) good and respectful feedback and testers get to crochet a pattern and experience testing. I absolutely love testing for you!!
Thank you! I've been thinking about how I wanna structure the pattern testing video, so I think I might try to do it soon! It's definitely a very delicate topic lol. I always love having you test for me! 💕
Yep i was the weird kid knitting in the playground...1970s ... now still feel like a bit of an imposter because i relate more to younger crocheters interests, style so how does that work lol? Old soul as a kid... young soul as an adult😂😂
Just found you and I'm enjoying the candid conversations surrounding this hobby :) Honestly the drama in amigurumi made me hesitate to start any public accounts surrounding crochet, specifically (I have my channel that's a mixed bag, but I started a crochet-only channel that I have not been giving attention to). Around the time I started the new channel, all that drama came out with that one "build-your-own duck" pattern and man, so much hate suddenly about all sorts of pattern stealing...and then the fear of selling patterns because I wouldn't want my work stolen. Anyway as another aside, you are absolutely right about going viral! I have one outlier viral video and holy moly, the vitriol in the comment section is tangible. It was a nice boost income-wise and also subscribers, but I don't think it's necessarily a good thing when it comes down to it. Especially just an outlier video. But you definitely have to have a thick skin for youtube, that's for sure.
Welcome! I'm glad you're enjoying it. 💕 I have to say I've never heard of the "build-your-own-duck" drama, I'll have to look it up. But yes, pattern theft is definitely a problem, especially in the beginner difficulty range because it's a lot easier for a copycat to copy something simple. I've found that thieves who want to profit on your work almost exclusively steal free patterns from people on Ravelry, putting your patterns behind a paywall seems to be effective in stopping them. I've wanted to put out a pattern or two for free, but unfortunately the thieves ruin it for everyone 😔
I've tested for some larger accounts and think I didn't get invited back because I didn't sing their praises and did provide constructive feedback. When it lines up, there's always one designer who accepts me for tests because of my feedback. Some people just want to hear their work is great and push out quantity over quality of patterns. I just found your YT but have seen your patterns before in my highlights on Ravelry. I plan to make your dimetrodon for my dino-obsesssd son once I find the time.
Chenille was the yarn i used for my 2nd project and i love it XD i took 8 years off and on trying randomly to learn, (not kidding lol) finally clicked with one medium weight yarn project but I mostly do plush or soft yarns because my hands hurt extremely extremely bad from thinner yarns 😂 I have a commission in medoum yarn amd i am dying lol
Oh, definitely want a video on testing! I'd love a designers point of view. And, just throwing this out there, take it or leave it, but the cotton you mentioned is not a cotton a would ever use for amigurumi. That is cotton made for dish cloths. There is way better quality, softer, pliable cotton out there. And definitely try needle felting! The details it can produce is amazing. And its actually super simple. I like to use it to nake realistic eyes because i dont always love a saftey eye.
I will definitely start working on a tester feedback video! And thank you for the info about the cotton yarn! I had a feeling Peaches 'n' Creme was not great amigurumi yarn. Do you have any brand recommendations? I remember your Pambdelurion looked fantastic! (That was cotton right? 👀)
@@KatyasYarnBois yes! That was ... I believe it's called "friendship" ... cotton from Hobbii. Once I have all my yarn unpacked I'll have to look. That's a thin cotton though. Joanns has a soft cotton from their K/C Essential line. That's a 4 weight.
Please make a good vs bad tester feedback video! I feel like everyone is always writing "Pattern is amazing" and then there is me with a whole list of spelling mistakes, inconsistencies (eg slpst vs slst or SC vs sc) and I don't know if I am being too picky as a former copywriter or whether the others don't take that part that seriously and just want the "free" pattern
Chenille was the yarn i used for my 2nd project and i love it XD i took 8 years off and on trying randomly to learn, (not kidding lol) 😊finally clicked with one medium weight yarn project but I mostlyndo plush or soft yarns because my hands hurt extremely extremely bad from thinner yarns 😂 I have a commission in medoum yarn amd i am dying lol
Ahaha I think the first two takes are from me. To be fair, I have kind of poor fine motor skills so I think the stiff and bigger yarns are easier for me. I looooove plushies made from the Bernat Blanket and I think it slides on the hook very smoothly and is so soft and nice to work with! But I get the sensitive hands thing and I know a lot of people have that problem or don't like it for other valid reasons. That's why I thought it would be a good "unpopular" opinion 😂
Definitely a great unpopular opinion!! I find it super interesting to hear how people with different mobility have different preferences for yarn types. My unpopular opinion is that acrylic is my all time favorite! I know a lot of people hate it lol. Thank you for submitting them both 😁
Im a velvet gal but blanket yarn is my go to for markets. Ppl love it so much. The key is to use a smaller hook and a looser tension. I use a 6mm hook and it turns out the same size as an 8mm hook with tighter tension lol
Blanket yarn definitely gives the best profit margin for markets! You can crochet much bigger things in way less time. I'm also a big fan of the "small hook loose tension" mantra! I use a 2.5 mm on everything and crochet relatively loosely. Definitely reduces the wear and tear on my hands too!
I feel the copying is still going strong but not as many are saying anything about it. All it takes is for one designer to get attention for a pattern and then for the next 2 weeks, you'll see that same "design" released 20 times over.
Your hair and name reminds me of a friend I grew up with as a small kid did you ever happen to live in Texas at any point love the plushies loveeeeeeee the dinos and all the diffrenct types im amazed!

I am a low sew maker. I try to think of ways to still be as creative and free as possible while still making it as little sewing as possible lol 😂
