It can also be without violence and not just against women. Children even tiny babies are raped. Men are raped. Women can and so rape men, women and children of all ages. Children, even those whom have not been groomed to be sexual or been sexually abused by any means, have been known to rape others. Some do so because of what has been done to them or being introduced to pornography or open curiosity with other children they know that develops into more of an obsessive behaviour. Most rape is not about sexual attraction but rather it is about power and control. Some cults force sexual acts and create a culture of subjugation and manipulation. War, acute chronic civil unrest, these times when there is a heightened sense of fear, uncertainty, hatred and aggressive conflict tend to also come with an increase in sexual violence.

@@cygnusustus No where in the verse you mentionned the word rape is implied, actually its a law in that time that if you see a captive women in a war situation, that you bring her to your house , take care of her and let her mourn for a month about her lost, after that you had the right to marry her and if you changed your mind she was free to go and you had no right to sell her as a slave.(Deuteronomy 21:10-14)
In that time widows of war were typically destitute. They were turned into sex slaves, tortured, or killed. In Jewish culture, however, these women were given the dignity of marriage and a home. They weren’t considered sex objects; they were considered spouses. Moreover, if the marriage fell apart, the women could not be sold as slaves.
God gave us free will , he had to change the way we do thing slowly so that we agree to do so as a wicked species, you can see in the new testament that now just to imagine doing sex with a girl that is not married to you is a sin. God was never okay with rape, never.

My verse described non-consensual sex. That is rape.
No where in your post did you demonstrate any consent. Your interpretation seems to hinge on the claim that they had to be married first. That does not imply consent. It is truly sick of apologists to presume that these young women consented to marry and engage in sex with the men who had recently killed their grandparents, parents, brothers, and sisters.
      Truly sick.

@@cygnusustus Nowhere in the verse you used the words non-consensual sex is used, if you want to educate yourself go to a interlinear Bible online and see the meaning word for word of the old Hebrew , not all translation today are accurate. In this time it was common practice in every culture to rape women and kill them in war , but God said otherwise , he gave them life and protection and a husband to take care of them, its the best thing a women can pray for in this time of history where war was a common thing, God changed this world little by little for the best of humanity, God gave us free will because without free will we cant have true love , but human are wicked and have done evil with this free will , so God had to put rule that will change us over time to the best version that we can be. Now if you want to pick bad translation without studying the old hebrew and old greek , your argument will never be valid.

      1. To answer your question "why is there the crying out not mentioned here?" I don't know. It also doesn't mention where it happened like it did in earlier verses (city or open country). I'm going based off of the verbs that are used. The man is still punished for rape though as he is forced to pay a fine, forced to marry this woman, and he is never allowed to divorce her under any reason (these stipulations deter any would be rapists, punish the man and protects the woman). Also, if it was mutual consent then this situation would fall under Exodus 22:16, in which the man is still punished financially and obligated to marry the woman. Again I believe these laws are meant to deter the man, punish the man if he transgresses, and ultimately protect the woman.
      2. 2 Samuel 13 and Genesis 34 do indeed show rape is immoral (just like Deuteronomy 22 does) but the final outcome of these passages are irrelevant in a sense that rape did occur but revenge was taken before justice could be served. The perpetrators in these passages weren't executed under the law, they were murdered by those seeking revenge.
      3. I do not believe this would be a depraved legal system. Again, I am a Christian I love the Lord and I love His word. Deuteronomy 22:28 seems to be protecting the woman from shame, dishonor, poverty, singleness, childlessness, etc. Also, it seems the father of the victim may be able to refuse the marriage anyway (Exodus 22:17) perhaps to protect his daughter.

      No.
Go and read the Torah (Pentateuch) for the full context of all of these laws just like how the many people of that day understood them (unfortunately that doesn't mean they followed them as we later see). The Israelites were supposed to image God, thus they were meant to be righteous (you this throughout the Torah via God's instructions and the morals of the different stories). Hence the act of PHYSICAL SELFISH LUST would be unrighteous, and thus not meant to be done by the Hebrews.
Please I urge many of you who have issues with any text or extract to actually go and research the text in its entirety, before making assumptions, (including me).
Jesus Christ whether or not you understand him to be the Messiah, was a practicing Jew, who is quoted as saying "Then Jesus said to His disciples, 'If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me." This verse clearly echoes what Jewish philosophy was understood as "Matthew 5:17 (“Do not think that I have come to abolish Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”)" .
Thus what Jesus preached was in line with the philosophy of the Hebrews of the OT.
Again this applies whether or not you believe Jesus to be the Messiah.

Plus the laws were only somewhat of a guideline. As we see with the Pharisees, they abused it and twisted it for their own means and of course, many still do nowadays (some men of the church, politicians, leaders, and even you, and I in small or big instances unfortunately). The true understanding of the Law was a framework for righteousness NOT righteousness itself. This is evident once you read of certain godly men and women in the Hebrew Bible.

This video irresponsibly and incorrectly discusses sexual violence. It is wrong to say that rape requires physical resistance from the victim. The text says "cry out" NOT physically combat the assailant. Its a lie to say the scipture says a victim must combat the assailant.
Furthermore, Tamar "cried out" (same original word translated here as scream) AFTER her rape. Her rape includes a verbal protest, and then an outcry after the assault-- she told people who were around to tell.
Furthermore, we know rape can happen to a sleeping person. Or a drugged person. Or a cooperative child. Maybe part of the problem is to my understanding the Bible didnt have a concept of a single word standing in place of any intercourse where consent is absent (how we use rape) -- they had a concept of physically violent sex which we have translated as "rape" when their word denotes the violence of the illicit intercourse our word denotes the will of the victim.
For example lots daughters raped him and davids son raped multiple of his wives in front of evryone yet the word we translate as rape doesnt appear in these contexts as they were nonviolent instances of the sexual violation of the victims consent/will.
This was an irresponsibly sloppy hackjob of a presentation on one of the most important subjects in the world. Im surprised yall didnt go right on ahead and say "its impossible for a man to rape his wife"--- good teaching wont bear horrific fruit. Its hard to believe you could be led by the spirit of God to say that crying, shaking, struggling, protesting dont count as rejecting consent without screaming. Thats what a rapist would say/believe amd the church is no stranger to domestic or sexual violence, protecting perpetrators, etc. God bless the nonrapists.

Better question why does a loving and caring God allow rape to happen in the first place ?
      Free Will i am told.
So then if free will is so important that it takes full and total precedence over the prevention of evil and suffering, why is the free will of the person perpetrating the evil and inflicting the suffering in the first place so valuable and preferable that it takes precedence over the free will of their innocent victim?
If God values free will over anything else, then why does He not care about the violation and impediment of an innocent person's free will?
Why must the free will of the evildoer be safeguarded and protected at the expense of the free will of their victim?

"The Bible addressed the subject of rape directly."
Nope. It never addressed rape directly. Rape was not a crime under mosaic law.
Having sex with a woman who was not your property was a crime....against the man to whom the woman belonged.
It is sad that this guy has to lie about his own scriptures.

i read that there was an example in the bible where a man got drunk and then impregnated his daughters. can you comment on that?

Lot. Following the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, his daughters believed the entire Earth had been wiped out and they were the only people left to repopulate the world.
They then got their father drunk so that he would pass out and they could lie with him. It's explicitly stated Lot was unaware of what they did and they were motivated by the belief that they were the only people left.

guessing you heard that from reddit. are you referring to the man whose daughters got him drunk so they could impregnate him because there were no men around and they thought they wouldn't be able to have children? The way you can spin a story can land you a job as a journalist.
