He stood taller than 99% of all musicians. He was truly one of a kind. He was one of the first performers that crossed over into other genre of music. In the summer of 1968, he had the number one country song, pop song, and tv show at the same time. I don't think that has been done since.
In his early years Cash could and did rock with the best of them. But very few country singers have seen the life that the Cash songs come from. The man IS and WAS country music at its best
That song has some great imagery, and better kines. I have been listening to that song now 50 years.I get the same images on my mind now, that I did when I was 8 years old.
pretty sure he is the musical director, keeping everybody on track and signaling their spotlight solos. Def necessary in shutting some of these trainwrecks down.
The Man in Black....jammin wit Blacks...lol....Johny woulda had everybody up there if he could have....Black was beautiful to Him....quite evident.....of coarse he liked the White stuff too a lil.......I was blessed growing up and hearing his voice and music....it was either Johny....Willie....or Frank...Mom was Italian....I was lucky....they let me find Rock n Roll all by myself.....thanks to KISS!!!!......Keep on Rockin in the Free World..R.I.P Johny...
I was like whats going on with the guitar parts. It's the worst version of Big River I have heard. Johnny Cash did his part to perfection but the band behind him I will say they were terrible.
AlbostyleG The whole thing was just improvised apparently. One of the Johnny Cash biographies mentions that this part of the show got surreal as Shaeffer also got them all to do Purple Haze. According to Johnny Cash he and Keith Richards were completely lost during the performance, but Johnny looked back on it with humor later.
He looked to have a bit of fun! He wasn't a super stuffy person. I'm sure he found fun in most situations 😁 Just look at that big smile after Fogerty's solo at 2:12
Oh, my God this version really stinks!!! Poor Johnny Cash, only his magical presence on stage could save this horrible moment. John Fogerty's solo seems to be quite acceptable but it's not easy to distinguish it very well among all those horrible guitar sounds behind. I didn't like Richards' solo in the least either.
John Fogerty looks very handsome here. He looks hotter here than he did when he performed with CCR. Who agrees? Here at this rock and roll hall of fame ceremony Mr. Fogerty is a polite gentleman. I find that to be sexually arousing. Johnny Cash fans who are reading this must forgive me for my non sequitur. If they are annoyed by it, can they please provide a link to another video in which handsome John Fogerty is dressed formally? If not, how about a photo? I can’t find other images, so I’m sharing my observations of Mr. Fogerty here. Peace to all. Stay safe.
Could of tossed all those guitar players aside with Bob Wootton playing the Perkins part.....Cash songs need Tennessee Three backing...and to bad Cash had a hard time singing the song in E he needed the old capo and the key of F very plain to hear....
Well, if you are a good musician, then first, you must have heard Big River before and figured out its chord pattern, and second you wouldn't need rehearsal to play it at least decently. But this is only showing off and wrecking the song.

Never thought I'd be such a fan off his type of music. Here I am, watching this tribute and wishing I was on the stage. LEGEND.
Reading John Fogerty’s autobiography and love seeing what he said come to life! Playing with Keith and cash his idol!
In his early years Cash could and did rock with the best of them. But very few country singers have seen the life that the Cash songs come from. The man IS and WAS country music at its best
So true. A legend in his own Time!!!
There was no rehearsal for this song ...it was off the cuff...Johnny and the sound
E was always golden
That song has some great imagery, and better kines. I have been listening to that song now 50 years.I get the same images on my mind now, that I did when I was 8 years old.
They needed to turn Johnny's microphone up!
Same
Cash is a man
Foggerty and Cash on the same stage, I might cry
Jahahh
* Fogerty*
Love you cash eres puro amor juapo
Immense Monsieur un géant !!!!!!
These sophisticated musicians had trouble with the 2 5 1 change ha ha ...
I'm thinking the same thing lol
I don't there is anyone sophisticated on that stage.
@@Allagi22 You shites, this was off the cuff there was no rehearsal
schaffer said this is in "E"...Turds, know music.
@@carolinebjerkelund767 but the song is original in F and its in E you can hear cash struggle with th song in E
This is the problem when you have 25 front men but no backup guys.
Damn right!
Johnny and Keef🖤
Too many legends spoil the broth.
again HOW DO REHEARSE THIS!!!
awesome
Johnny Cash & the Muppets
Proof that earths mightiest heroes are better doing their own thing
I had an Ovation Celebrity ..great guitar.
Cantas hermoso Cash te amo juapo
real country music!
Johnny is the tough
helpless stars.
all kids is here
nice to see legends
Fucking Hell!!....Richards, and etc,.... Playing!
250 guitarists on stage, but no one to man the mixing table.
Can we get just one more guitar player up there.. it would fill the sound up a little more..lol
Lol😅😂
Man, this sounds dreadful, turn Cash up
Look at the looks on their face.
⭐⭐⭐
WTF is Paul Shaeffer trying to do?
His EGO is creating a cringy cringe scenario. On the live stage in front of the world.
He’s a strange ranger but he can be forgiven for the concert with Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, and Ray Charles. It’s phenomenal

Actually not as bad as i thought it would be cash saved it some of these are worse than others still fun to see all these greats together
Is the "Edge in there?"
yes he is
Oh that’s who that is!!
Paul Shaffer always fucks shit up!
Ugh. The band is so lost. Cash is the man for just plodding along though, and you can tell Keith knows the blues like the back of his hand.

The guitarists don't know how to play it
So true
feel like only cash, keith and fogerty had a clue. the rest just seemed lost
You could tell Johnny fought through this and didn't enjoy it one bit
Seeing as how there's about 37 guitarists on that stage at the same time, I don't blame him.
He looked to have a bit of fun! He wasn't a super stuffy person. I'm sure he found fun in most situations 😁
Just look at that big smile after Fogerty's solo at 2:12
Takhle blbě zahranou Big river jsem neslyšela a přebíjí i Johnnyho krásný hlas
this sounds not so good all those guitars playing not good.

no rehersal...best guitarists wanted in this...jeeze count them
i could of played a better solo.... the original solo!

I thought they did a fabulous job...There's no doubt all these guys put togeather could even rehearse this
You thought they did fabulous??
I'll come to play guitar for you to your house. $700 per night.
I am a ...... Uh... FABULOUS player. ...
$700
They don't know nothing!! Stars. Ha!
Anyone notice that the musical director is non-other than Paul Shafer ?
The music was louder than him.
Whoever mixed this did a horrible job.
There’s a bald guy in the background who looks like he is showing the other bald guy how to play the song or something near the end of the video.
Johnny cash was great but the band sucked
You can barely hear Johnny sing
@@malinahandford4820 bad mixing
Johnny cash looks weird with that style of guitar strap. Like if you agree (I’m not begging for likes don’t worry 😉).
Definently not his style. Besides Johnny himself this video is fucking horrible
@@Darian-mk1bw & who wears it that low. They REALLY should of let him use his OWN guitar.
@@shinyredpaintworkproductio7969 yeah they really ruined what should have been a very proud moment for him
WTF was the sound guy doing?

He always played this in E. He'd have a capo at the 2nd fret and play D, E, G, A7 and F chords (in key).
No wonder he’s shouting! His mic is muted. Turn the ugly guitarist off and turn John up.
i wet my pants
Go Johnny! Keith Richards Can't play a decent county/rock lead guitar on this number. Doesn't even fill in much. Terrible.

the musicians behind were on their own world... they destroyed the song
They butchered that
The comments here by you "critics" crack me up. Let it go for what it was, a jam for all to participate in. Get over yourselves. LOL
1:09, dude not havin it. no thanks Paul. I'll hide back here.
I'm surprised Fogerty wasn't on this one better. Horrible version, boo to all the stars that weren't listening
