This was a big deal for me because no one had seen a hard rock band like this. It's not like they got a free pass either, they fuckin earned it. Back then we didn't have the term "woke" that's been hijacked to a negative connotation but we just silently watched progress unfold without making a big deal about it.

One thing to keep in mind is that these bands are professionals, they know precisely how they sound, and how that sound will make people feel. So when you get a solo or a part of a song that sounds sloppy or chaotic, its definitely intentional. Some bands are purposely trying to make the listener feel uncomfortable with the sounds they are producing. Remembering this always helped me appreciate some music that was otherwise jarring.

In this song they're acknowledging how "cult of personally" can be had and used by both good and bad people (it's like a personality trait; you either "have it" or you don't). These are usually leaders with power and charisma that use their influence to reach people....and they all tend to have loyal followers irregardless of whether their intentions are pure or nefarious. JFK and Gandhi had it, but so did Mussolini and Stalin. When interviewed about the song's meaning, the band members said it's basically an observation about those in power, the similarities in their personalities regardless of intent (cult of personality), but not necessarily taking any particular stance.

Corey is actually wearing a Body Glove (a popular 80's brand of active clothing known for their day-glow colors) "tank spring suit", a form of surfing wetsuit for mild-warm days.
This song is more relevant today more than ever. Lex is right, Corey was speaking in the third person.

      They have been legitimately dangerous.
Today, we have one of these pronounced examples in trump.

Living Colour is different because few bands have the diversity of influences that they do: Jimi Hendrix, Santana, James Brown, Van Halen, Midnight Oil, Bad Brains, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Sharrock, James Blood Ulmer, Al Green, Frank Zappa, Ronald Shannon Jackson (Vernon Reid was in his band before Living Colour was formed), Henry Bellefonte (Will Calhoun played drums for him before Living Colour), Talking Heads (Living Colour covered them on their first album)....so on and so forth.
Living Colour are politically outspoken rock, funk, punk, metal, blues, free jazz, with occasional bits of calypso, West African desert blues, electronica, hip hop...
The guitar is not sloppy. It free and complex. Vernon Reid comes from a free jazz background.

I remember seeing this video when I was a kid ( think I was like 6 or 7). I was blown away by the imagery and Corey Glover's voice was so good to me. I loved the combination of the more metal driven guitar and the groove of the vocals.

Uh, no true straight guy ever wore those "work out" outfits. Only Mr. Simmons did. 😆

Esta banda en su momento merecía mayor reconocimiento. Eran muy buenos.

A band that was awesome in their day, but also ahead of their time. Corey's voice is off the charts awesome!

Trivia: When original bassist Muzz Skullings left the band, he was replaced by Doug Wimbish who played bass on all the early Sugar Hill records by the Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Sequence, Spoonie G, and others. Yes, before sampling was introduced in the mid-80's hip-hop actually used live bands in the studio and sometimes on tour.

You two are the perfect example of "complementary." You're both equally intelligent, and bright, and thoughtful, but you know entirely different things. Lex is very imaginative, and cerebral - she sees the music; she's very technical. Brad is more pragmatic, and sees the practical application in the music; he's very lyrically analytical.
You're both way out there (in a great way), but in complementary yet completely different ways.

Ever, it was like a whole body bang. Like he's like over there like a freaking boomerang...luv it... I saw them live at Carter Finely Stadium in Raleigh NC opening for The Rolling Stones 1989

That jumpsuit is called The Body Glove- widely worn by surfers.
This song is still relevant today. Brilliant

Yeah fantastic lead guitar, the solo sounds like someone coloring and suddenly starts scribbling crazy. Living Colour, the only black hair band I ever heard of.
