Story telling is one of the things that sets Steve apart from everyone else. I've heard one crutic say it sounds like he's harmonizing with himself, but it's a single take.
You wouldn't say that if Steve were the original singer and this guy sang the version you've always known. You would say, "That Steve Perry guy didn't have the range my boy Fleischman has, good enough as he was." It's all hype.
Robert WAS the lead singer for 5 to 6 months. The record label insisted that Journey get a frontman that could lift the band and make the band more palatable for the mainstream audience. Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon liked and wanted Robert. However, Robert Fleischman had his own manager. And Robert wouldn't abandon his manager to sign with Journey manager Herbie Herbert. So Herbie brought Steve Perry along to help 'roadie' with the band as the band toured with Fleischman. Steve Perry learned the songs and was basically being an understudy for Robert. When Herbie couldn't convince Robert to sign with him, Herbie fired Fleischman and told Journey that Steve (the roadie-as they considered him) to be the new lead singer. Both Gregg and Neal didn't like Perry's voice as they considered him a 'crooner' and they preferred the 'screamer' Fleischman. But Steve was able to write with Schon and win him over. I don't know if the relationship between Rolie and Perry was ever really comfortable though. It seems that the more Perry gained influence and power in the band structure, the more Rolie didn't want to be there. Ultimately, the band rightly sided with Perry to amazing success. Tellingly, neither Fleischman nor Rolie would see great success after leaving. And indeed, neither would Journey after moving on without Perry (studio-wise).
Man. Excellent post. I posted on another video of Bob's that I didn't think Rollie and Perry vibed; hence, the Baby's keyboardist. You said it better, though. That "fire" CD they put out in the mid 90's was it for me. It was horrible, and lent great strength to Rollie's "he's a crooner" statement.
Fleischman did a successfull album with Vinnie Vincent, and Vinnie wanted to resume to work with Robert, but Robert refused the contract that Vinnies producer gave him. And Robert had a success as a composer) he wrote the main track to Spange Bob, as I know :)
The label was right. Guy's got pipes, but this version sounds like a "look at how I can wail" song, rather than the musical masterpiece that Perry made it. When Fleischman sings it now, he sings the album version and not this one. Even he knows.
Fleischman was also difficult to work with according to Herbie. He basically had lead singers disease and they hadn't even gotten started yet and he just wasn't going to deal with him and his manager. And as Herbie stated, Steve was very quite at that point and basically was on the verge of leaving music. True the band wanted Robert but Herbie made the right call and as you said, after Steve started writing with Neal, we got the classic Journey lineup. As for Rolie I think they got along fine until Steve himself started becoming difficult of which Herbie has fully acknowledged. Afterall Herbie would be shown the door by Steve eventually. By the point Rolie bailed he had nearly two decades in music under his belt and needed a break. As for life after Journey for Gregg he appears to have been more than happy to slowdown. He had a few projects like the Storm but I think he was happy with the quiet life and heading up Ringo's All Star Band and Abraxas. I do think Gregg would have, and wanted to take up the offer to join back up with Journey that Neal wanted for the Anniversary tour but that was all nixed by Jon Cain. In fact if Cain had his way, Gregg would not have been at the RnR HOF induction. I have no use for Cain.
please keep in mind that this is a demo... producers usually work with the band/singer to smooth out parts that may be objectionable. For musicians, it is always easier to embellish on a song than it is to come with the original part. I think the final version is very close to this and Steve did a fabulous job on the finished product.
Yes, this vocal is likely the way Fleischman would sing it in a live concert setting, not as a polished studio radio-ready track. The producers would have requested him to tone down the extras and stick mostly to the melody for the album's track, which is what Steve Perry did. Fleischman can embellish all he wants in a live stage setting. I'd also point out that this may be one of the very first times the band has put this track together in this cohesive of a way. It's possible that Fleischman had only sung this song a handful of times at the time of this recording... meaning, he didn't yet have a handle on it.

What more would you expect from a 70s demo??? They would hardly spend that much time mixing and mastering a demo-- polishing comes with additional time in studio with a well-rehearsed or phenomenal singer-- we know which one Perry is-- and some mastering to finish it.
I recorded this song off the radio onto a cassette and played it when ever I felt like hearing it. Was the first Journey song I ever heard and in turn became a huge fan of the band. 40+ years later I’m finding out Robert wrote the song...strange. It’s weird to think that 2 incredible singers assumed your job and sang your songs and even lip synced videos to your music, which in turn led to him getting the boot from Journey & VV. His stage presence was way strange...trying to slide his feet across the stage and a really weird dance move..just weird & embarrassing. Here’s a good interview with R.F. th-cam.com/video/xNyAk0D9aZ4/w-d-xo.html
Fleischman wasn't with Journey long, less than a year. They did not make a lot of headway, but then they never got to the point of releasing an album, which would have surely contained the songs Robert wrote which Steve Perry sang on Infinity. Robert was hired because Columbia records, concerned over the groups low album sales, demanded they sing more and hire a lead to stand in front. He hit it off with the other band members, but Herbie Herbert, Journey's very powerful manager, was irked that Fleischman refused to leave his own manager and get under Herbert's umbrella. Furthermore, Robert was not Herbie's type of guy, Herbert referring to Fleischman as a "poodle". Robert has stated he wasn't really devastated by the firing as he always felt better off musically and personally as a solo act in control of his own destiny. He kept on good terms with his former Journey mates over the years, with them appearing on Robert's 1979 solo album, and Robert is the occasional opening act for the Arnel Pineda version of Journey. Robert also lives near Steve Perry and they are very good friends.
@@wheelinthesky300 The irony is that, as I understand it, eventually it was Steve Perry who insisted on firing Herbie Herbert. Should stuck with Robert, Herbie! Oops.
How much did you guys have to settle to use Wheel? Is it worth $250,000 for a concert standard in perpetuity? I thought the new arrangement was much better.
Fleischman voice very good and more in line with a Plant or Gillan...Perry is a Sam Cooke soulful thing never done in harder progressive music...Fleischman is an amazing vocalist...needed a more sympathetic band to go with crazy range
Fleischman had that classic high-pitched androgynous rock voice that was very popular in that era. The recording industry could easily have piped him over the airwaves endlessly, making him a star. Maybe he ticked off the wrong people.
No idea. But he never made in the industry which is a shame. Record execs were even insistent on replacing him with Mark Slaughter in Vinnie Vincent's band despite the fact Vinnie picked him personally because he loved his voice, and range.

His vocal style is slightly more metallic than Steve Perry. Seems like they might have gone in more of a heavy metal direction instead of AOR with Fleischmann. Perhaps Neal would have enjoyed that more, and perhaps Aynsley would have stayed on drums instead of joining Whitesnake if Journey had gone metal?
Metal? This demo sounds like pure disco inferno. Listen to that drum track. LOL.
Ansley joined Jefferson Starship immediately after being sacked from Journey. He’s on their hit Jane.
Patricia LAMBERT Dunbar got sacked because he had a problem messing around with very young groupies and was telling people that Journey was HIS band.
Steve Perry is my guy.🌹
Hope the guy got some royalties
woah Robert had more of a boston feel with his version....sounds pretty damn cool.....steve definitely made it his own when he came in though.
Just going to say, that this is the exact same video that I posted over 5 years ago. I mean, I am glad that the demo is out there now, and I know the pictures are not mine, but maybe you could give me credit for putting the video together? That or maybe make your own video?
Musician 1020 I love fleishmans voice almost as much as Steve Perry but ur right Steve set it pver the top that said fleishmann is excellent vocalist
Stop whining
Not anywhere nearly as good as Steve Perry. Robert is a good singer, but Steve is the GOAT.
It doesn’t even sound like same song. His squeals are just too much. Sounds like he’s faking the high notes. Great song. But Steve took it to the stratosphere!!
I don’t know. I kinda like it
It’s not bad just different kind of sounds a little like Dio. Wouldn’t mind a better quality sound on this.
It sounds like Robert Plant in Zeppelin. Who will say, that Zeppelin was a bad band? Robert is great. And he still can sing, actually.
What more would you expect from a 70s demo??? They would hardly spend that much time mixing and mastering a demo-- polishing comes with additional time in studio with a well-rehearsed or phenomenal singer-- we know which one Perry is-- and some mastering to finish it.
Like Dio? I so want some of whatever you’re taking.
@@algallego I heard Perry sing this live and he does a beautiful job. This guy sounds like he's being attacked by bees.
@@MattSmithMe Check out Dio on Kerry Livgrens To live for the King.
better than i thought it would be
Steve perry was made for power ballads. So I guess journey was headed that way before steve perry?
Open Arms was the 1st power ballad. Courtesy of Jon Caine and Steve.
I didn't feel this. Steve takes me there with him. Great voice for another type of song though.
Sounds like any other 70s band with this dude, not impressed with his vocals. Steve Perry was phenomenal when he sang this song.
Much better than Pineda's version
Aún así es su canción
Great!
Robert kinda looks like Adam Sandler with a mullet.
Truth is journey manger knew Steve Perry is wat they needed he was excauty right
Robert wrote this tune ❤
I'm wondering how he felt when he was fired. Was he expecting it to happen and he was ok with being fired, or was he taking it negatively?
Journey has a penchant for firing their leads out of nowhere
Fleischman wasn't with Journey long,
less than a year.
They did not make a lot of headway,
but then they never got to the point of releasing an album,
which would have surely contained the songs Robert wrote
which Steve Perry sang on Infinity.
Robert was hired because Columbia records,
concerned over the groups low album sales,
demanded they sing more
and hire a lead to stand in front.
He hit it off with the other band members,
but Herbie Herbert, Journey's very powerful manager,
was irked that Fleischman refused to leave his
own manager and get under Herbert's umbrella.
Furthermore, Robert was not Herbie's type of guy,
Herbert referring to Fleischman as a "poodle".
Robert has stated he wasn't really devastated
by the firing as he always felt better off musically and personally as a solo act in control of his own destiny.
He kept on good terms with his former Journey mates over the years, with them appearing on Robert's 1979 solo album,
and Robert is the occasional opening act for the Arnel Pineda
version of Journey.
Robert also lives near Steve Perry
and they are very good friends.
@@wheelinthesky300 The irony is that, as I understand it, eventually it was Steve Perry who insisted on firing Herbie Herbert. Should stuck with Robert, Herbie! Oops.
@@Jessica_Roth if they wanted the label to drop them...
Im sure Roberts accountant likes those nice Royalty checks he gets from the Infinity record.
Steve Perry
Not a bad version considering he wrote it but it would not have done well on the radio too much screaming
All Roberts have quite the range.
Robert pretty good singer
So much better with Perry. I'm sure they thought so too
How much did you guys have to settle to use Wheel? Is it worth $250,000 for a concert standard in perpetuity? I thought the new arrangement was much better.
The thing is, Robert wrote this song, he owns it.
It's got to kill him that Steve Perry SLAYED this song and made it his own
Fleischman voice very good and more in line with a Plant or Gillan...Perry is a Sam Cooke soulful thing never done in harder progressive music...Fleischman is an amazing vocalist...needed a more sympathetic band to go with crazy range
oh hell no - this is a massacre
Flipping awesomeness
ats Fff up for sure, here he thought my Band
If Dio sang with Journey lol. Fleischman is, in terms of pure technical ability, superior to Perry. Neal's guitar a throwback to Santana '71.
😳😳 yarp! Anybody can screech!
They didn't like this dude .. he can sang.....
Fleischman had a horrible stage presence........glad things turned out the way they did.
Steve perry is 50 times the singer of this guy.
Poor guy, replaced in 2 bands by singer's nobody can even touch. Long live Perry, and Slaughter
Fleischman is definitely as good (or better) than many singers that have made it huge. I guess he didn't have the right connections.
@@ikill4klondikebars ...VVI sucked with Slaughter. Mark couldn't hold Robert's jock strap
Interesting
I like this guy, once perry joined journey i bailed
The chorus is ok ... but the verse ain't so great ... Steve really made it great!
Exactly.
