  • Theodore Baker-Jones kindly demonstrates the basics and some of the history of the beautiful but deadly Māori fighting staff/spear, the Mau Taiaha. He emphasized that this is Mātauranga or traditional knowledge and should at all time be treated with respect.

Glad you enjoyed it Christiaan. It's taken a while as we wanted to make sure we honoured the tradition of both the weapon and the people that use it.

isnt it!? So often this kind of knowledge is "kept sectret" which always seems insane to me, although of course you have to respect the decision.

I did the last class with Theo at a previous camp and as a few others have rightly commented, there are many similarities, unsurprisingly, with the Kumi jo especially, but its really obvious that this was a MARTIAL system to teach basic skills to men who would quite likely have to fight for their lives using this weapon. Its rare to see a training system that we KNOW was proven in battle.

So much of this is familiar from jo pair work, but at the same time the stance makes it seem totally alien to watch. really useful i think though for lot's of reasons

If you think that this is a lethal weapon in my ahuatanga o te Ao Maori this is a weapon of a foot soldier, the Far North have a taikaha, different again, the tewhatewha is the weapon of a Noaia,a general of the taiaha warrior's, and then the weapon of a Taiopuru,,a Hoeroa, the most lethal weapon of my people, kia ora....
