  • This time on WhenTheMountainsCall we were back up in Scotland taking on a lesser known mountain with a secret ridge that quite simply blew us away. Then on to a viewpoint that has to be up there as one of the best anywhere in Scotland.
While spending the week staying in Lochinver we were keen to tackle some of Assynt's more spectacular mountains. Ben More Coigach is one that many people tend to miss due to it being just below Corbett status and well below Munro status. But head North of our Ullapool and you simply can't miss the giant imposing rock wall that seems to spring up out the sea. We've driven past this on many occasions and gazed in wonder at the towering sandstone pinnacles high above.
So after a little research we decided this walk was just about within our capabilities. After a steep climb up the face of the mountain we found ourselves on the impressive ridge of Ben More Coigach, this ridge has often been described as one of Scotland best kept secrets, and for good reason! We spent two hours up on the ridge and didn't see a single person.
After an impressive walk along the ridge to the summit of Ben More Coigach it's back down a little way and then up to our second peak of the day, Sgurr an Fhidhleir, better known as The Fiddler. If you've driven down the narrow road that leads to Stac Pollaidh, you've seen the Fiddler to the left as a tall pyramid like mountain.
The views from the Fiddler was quite simply staggering. Looking north to Stac Pollaidh, Suilven, Canisp and more, all the giants of Assynt laid out before us, it really was breathetaking.
This walk really was something very special. Most people who head north of Ullapool to the mountains of Assynt head for the well known summits of Suilven and Stac Polliadh, but next time do yourself a favour, take the road less traveled and head for Ben More Coigach and the Fiddler, I promise you that you will not be disappointed.

Breath-taking footage! How about including a little map at the start of the vid so we know where you are? Just a suggestion 🙂

@@runnymederangers hi, thanks for the suggestion and watching. I’d love to include a map with some graphics but am not sure how to do it while avoiding copyright laws. I’ve been told I can’t use OS maps as they break t&c’s. I’d love to know how to add a map as you’re right, it would help people know where we are.
