Three lead singers in this 70s hit machine. Their "Never Been To Spain", "Black And White", "One", "An Old Fashioned Love Song" and"Eli’s Coming" are next for you!!

I love the slow burn of “Never Been to Spain.” Reminds me of the build-up in Led Zeppelin’s “What Is and What Should Never Be.”

Listen to their drummer. This dude can play off the beat, propelling this song forward. very similar to Ringo in this. That basic rock beat is so powerful from him. Great break and middle 8 on this as well. Again, Beatles.

And it's a great song. Like some of the Beatles catalog, works just as well for kids as for adults (as long as you don't mind the kinds singing about drinking wine, which I would be a negative for Mormons or Muslims).

Since you have discovered Nilsson you should do his song “One,” which was not a hit but Three Dog Night took it and reinterpreted it and made it a monster hit. Maybe do them back to back. It’s a fantastic song.

Such a great, great song. One's lovely big hit version is by Three Dog Night. Nilsson's is a gorgeous original. And Aimee Mann's (from Magnolia) is the best, most soulful version.

When I was in 4th grade, our class went on a joint field trip with a 5th grade class. On the way back, one of the 5th grade boys pulled out a transistor radio, this song came on, and all the 5th graders started rocking out and singing along. Being a grade younger than them, of course everything they did seemed cool to me, and I was kind of awestruck at how this song came on the radio and they all knew it and knew all the words and could sing along. Before that day, I paid zero attention to music. After that day, I started listening to the radio and saving up my money to buy the singles I liked. So this song really marks the beginning of my love of music.

I was in the 7th grade when the nuns at our school decided to create an 8th Grade Lounge so that those older kids could hang out together during noon recess. (The school had grades 1-8, and they were probably wanting to prepare them for high school social life.) Every day, at 12:05 -- after they'd wolfed down their lunch in five minutes, and rushed down the stairs to their lounge -- they'd crank up the record player. And for several mos., the first words we would hear in our classrooms, up and down the hallwall, were, *"JERI-MIAH WAS A BULL-FROG... [duh-duh-duh!}...".* 🎶 Three minutes later, they'd play it a second time...then, on some days, a third time.
I loved it, and the song became indelibly imprinted into all my body's cells.

Every 1st grader sang this song word-for-word, starting with the iconic line "Jeremiah was a bullfrog..." OBVIOUSLY, we had no idea what we were singing about. Wine, making love, you know I love the ladies, etc. I guess we did hear bullfrog, fishes in the sea, joy to the world, all the boys and girls. Cheers to the innocence of youth and the eventual broader understanding.

    • @natalie2240

I read this comment early in the morning the other day and nearly cried because of it, just because that inevitable innocence of children listening to music is so precious to me. ♥ You're so right, I always see people joke about how they sang songs they shouldn't have when they were younger. Children aren't understanding the lines about making love, but you can bet they rejoice hearing about bullfrogs and fishes and joy to the world for all the boys and girls. It shows how much these songs really are for every listener. Thanks for sharing this, hope you have a great day ♥

That's how pervasive it was.

The song One written by Harry Nilsson and covered by them will bring tears to your eyes. Another amazing song is called liar and The show must go on written by Leo Sayer. Unfortunately for Leo he released his version and they released their cover at the same time and their cover beat his original. I think that's the worst timing in the history of rock and roll. I thank you for all these reactions with deep respect. Going in a totally different direction you might want to check out the song Born to die by Angelina Jordan it is amazing and at the time I believe she was only 13 years old when she sang it. She sounded like a 35-year-old woman and that is a compliment. I wish you both a wonderful New Year. Be well and stay safe. With respect always, Brant. 😁

IIRC, the exact same thing happened with Leo Sayer and The Show Must Go On. If memory serves, the Sayer version didn't have the circus organ. Sayer's version didn't chart in the U.S. but went to #2 in the U.K. Sayer went on to have 8 US chart singles with 4 reaching in the top ten and 2 of those hitting #1.

Oh yeah! Gotta do Never Been To Spain!
It and Joy To The World we’re both written by Hoyt Axton, multitalented singer, songwriter and actor. He played the role of the father who brings the cute little fur balls in the film Gremlins.
One of my other favorites Axton wrote was Della And The Dealer which he recorded himself.
If you thought “ Jeremiah was a bullfrog” was the greatest opening line, well…..it is!
The opening line of Della And The Dealer and the chorus lyrics run a close second to it……
“It was Della and the Dealer and a dog named Jake
    And a cat named Kalamazoo.
Left the city in a pick up truck,
Gonna make some dreams come true”….
    Then the chorus…..
“If that cat could talk what tales he'd tell
About Della and the Dealer and the dog
    as well
But the cat was cool, and he never said a mumblin word.” He also wrote two songs that Steppenwolf covered, “The Pusher” and “Snowblind Friend.”

It's hard today to appreciate what a big deal these guys were in their heyday. Bigger crowds than Creedence, more records sold than the Beatles was what the posters said back in the day (maybe I have that backwards). They were often dismissed as being 'too commercial', but I've always felt that making so very many hit records is a sign that you're doing it right. And it's very strange that we got to a point where not writing your own songs is considered a strike against you. Did Elvis write his own songs? Sinatra? Crosby? Nope. And they're all considered legendary superstars. 3DN should be too. Love them to pieces. And I think Floyd Sneed is one of the most underrated drummers ever. Listen closely to his work. No overdubbing going on there - he played it all in one pass. And without sounding like it, each line, each verse is a touch different from the one that came before. Magic stuff. I'm tickled that you guys liked it so much.

Written by legendary singer/songwriter Hoyt Axton, who also penned 'Never Been to Spain' and 'The No-No Song.' He had a country bent to most of his work, but he also wrote protest songs (which cost him his Country Cred in the 60s) and many other genres like folk and rockabilly. There's a lot of material in Hoyt's catalogue; like 'Lion In The Winter,' 'Spin of the Wheel,' and 'I Love To Sing.'

It was their first really big hit, continues to be one of their most popular songs, and was written by Harry Nilsson, whom you have developed an interest in. It also is another song that sounds rather different from the other Three Dog Night songs that you've heard.

Three Dog Night is an American-Irish rock band from the 60's-70's. This band had a lot of energy. They had 3 guys with great voices that could all sing lead vocals. Hope you check out some more of their music. Some other great songs are "One", "Just An Old fashioned Love Song", Eli's Coming", Shambala", "Mama Told Me Not To Come", "Joy To The World", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Never Been To Spain", "Easy To Be Hard", "The Show Must Go On" etc.

"Out in the Country", "Eli's Coming", "One" and "Liar" are, for me, their very best. A lot of their other stuff was often labelled "Bubble Gum Music" and "Mickey Mouse Music" for surely some deeply scientific reason. There is already a perfectly good "Joy to the World" in existence. Why didn't they also do "Hark the Herald!" or "Es Ist Ein Ros Enstsprungen"?
If you compare this song with the other songs that were being released and/or created that year, you will find hidden treasures, like King Crimson's "In the Wake of Poseidon", which really is top rank. Since those were prime progressive music years, it might be prudent to scale accordingly. Fish have scales, but they can't weigh themselves.

Thank you for your wonderful review of my ALL TIME favorite groups Joy To The World!! I fell in love with 3DN in my late teens. I'm now 70 years old. Believe it or not, I've seen them in concert well over a dozen times. In fact, the last one was on 12/17/21. Yes, they've aged, but they put on one hell of a show. Only Danny of the original group is still with them. Cory passed away about 6 years ago. I got tears in my eyes every time they played a "Cory song". He was my favorite. To this day, I still can't pick out a favorite song of theirs because they are ALL so good. Eli's Coming is in my Top 10 for sure. Another song called "Out In The Country" is a beautiful song. Forever known for their amazing harmonies, the band members who belonged to the group were amazingly talented as well. They still have a great band with them!! There were a lot of us old timers at the concert, but I was surprised to see many younger "kids" as well. I've subscribed so I can hear you review any other TDN songs. You'll love them all, too.
