@@GranvilleGuitars I agree that it's a tough choice. However, they were necessary in order to utilize the amp again. The alternative is to leave it untouched and put it inside a glass case, which I think would be a disgrace to such magnificent piece.
Built 2 clones recently, the first one I’ll mod the second I’ll leave stock. They’re a beautiful amp. Mine are bloody loud when pushed to breakup , hence the mods coming for one of them. Great vid
The yellow sticker on the speaker bell indicates that the amp was originally approved for sale in Ontario Canada.....My guess is that it wasn't used much and spent much of its life in a very dry climate...!!
*edit* Triad 45317 is the original output transformer part number. This one didn’t look right to me but I found an image with the same “108” code on the top. Same galvanized finish and plastic former.
The output transformer in this amp is absolutely correct. The legendary #108. I've seen this transformer in at least a dozen 5e3's from mid to late 50's.
Such great dynamics amps to work touch, and guitar volume on! So many great tones, and they all say ROCK AND ROLL!!!! Simple control set, but so interactive? I generally like Inst. 1, with the Volume around 4, mic Volume around 8, and tone around 9. Mine is a Clone, but it’s awesome to see a high quality tech get this circuit in shape. Don’t have enough confidence in my soldering skills to get in there? (Plus, the proper tools to NOT electrocute myself!) Mine has a Celestion Blue, but I’m thinking of putting in a ceramic speaker to tighten things up a bit?
Did you stick with the 1.5K grid resistors in the end and what about a pair of 470ohm screen resistors on pin 4 of the 6V6s? - Am I right in assuming these additional components increase tube life?
- There are several reasons for this. Since the line voltages are higher now than they were when this amp was built I feel the extra capacitance helps the amp do what it does more easily. I've actually done comparisons with the old values at traditional line voltages (110v AC) and compared with new higher values at current line voltages (120v AC) and found them to be a much better fit. Most capacitors have a plus or minus of 20% anyway.
Paul Cargo - I will agree with your description of that being a great tone. I must disagree that Fender should've stopped there. Too many classic unforgettable guitar amp tones were waiting to be developed. In my own personal opinion the Fender Deluxe Reverb is quite possibly the perfect guitar amplifier.
isaia1100 - The 5E3 Deluxe has a 5Y3-GT rectifier, 2 6V6-GT power tubes operating in push-pull mode, and a 12AY7 and a 12AX7 in the preamp. The output is rated at about 15 watts.
Do you have a back story on this amp? Where did the owner get it? How much did he pay for it? Is he a dentist? It looks like a closet queen that was kept pretty much unplayed and covered.

Personally, I think it's better to have an amp 80% original and working properly, than to have an amp 100% original and not working at all.

Why not stick with the 16uf filter caps? F&T makes them. Just wondering

Thta amp left my shop years ago, so if you can't tell from the video I have no idea. Looks to me like the correct Jensen Special Design.
Bottom line at 9/10 volume and tone the break up is freakin perfect...The 6V6's are superb, Fender should have stopped right here.

They run about 12 watts. A loud 12 watts though.

Electrolytes had to be doubled in capacity, paper capacitors should be replaced with modern film ones.
