Another great informative vlog Richard. Anyone who wants to succeed in getting great images &/or video of Barn Owls needs to put in the time & effort. As you know I did a similar project to yours throughout the winter, & I learnt so much just by going out with binoculars & concealing myself away to observe their behaviour & learn their patterns. It really does pay off to do stuff like this, so good on you for putting out a vlog like this, a great watch & I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Really appreciate your kind words Nick, probably my most enjoyable Vlog to create and my obvious favourite bird! You are bang on the money about research and fieldcraft, it really does pay off. All the best R 👍
Really great video Richard! I recently saw a barn owl hunting not too far from where I live, and this is just the video I've been needing for photography tips + more information on the barn owl! So thanks for that! Hope you're keeping well too :)
Great video Richard, really informative and hopefully be able to take some of that knowledge and track down some local owl locations now. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Great insight into the Barn Owl and how to locate them. They are the most amazing birds so graceful and beautiful and can't wait to see what the series brings. They seemed to be fairly scarce around here last year but hoping they will return this year. Stay safe mate. Cheers Keith

Hey Richard, I think this will be a great series. If this is the project you mentioned ... I can see how it will be a time consuming project. Though I think it will be well worth your time. I know I will be looking forward to seeing part 2. Sayin' hey... Greg
Hey Greg, fingers crossed it comes through as the weather has been shocking the last week or so! It does take time and the Vlogs will be slower coming but weekly was getting tough and I wanted to focus on more quality over quantity! You've been awesome Greg, all the best until next time. Richard 👍
Very much looking forward to this mini series, Richard! Perfectly timed too - I stumbled upon a Barn Owl hunting locally to me about 6-8 weeks ago and have been back to watch it numerous times since. I'm trying to get access to the land to gain a better vantage point but unfortunately think it will be difficult to have the farmer agree.
Hi Jack, thanks very much indeed nice to have your support on the channel. Thats great news about the Barn Owl, once they get you they are quite addictive, says me 35 years later still hooked on them! Best of luck, not all Farmers will be happy but fingers crossed you get some results, let me know how it goes. Richard 👍
@@RichardBirchett certainly are - I've been fortunate to have found 3 or 4 locations within a few miles of home over the last few years, but this latest one is a 10 minute stroll from my front door - a few weeks back I actually had one in the field that backs on to our garden and am now thinking it was probably the same one I've been watching since. Unfortunately no luck with the farmer as yet - a shame because the margin that the owl tends to hunt down most of the time is on the far side of the field from which is too far off for any photos - either way it's great just to watch it hunt. Just watched part 2 and picked up some more useful tips - particularly about them hunting in to the wind, which makes sense, but never really thought about before!
That's a good point about them hunting elswear in winter and autumn months . But sometimes when you go further afield to look for your barn owl you can acidetly stumble on a second pair of barn owls.

Thanks Dean, hopefully there will be success at the end of it, lol.. You will be surprised they are probably closer than you think. Thats's always the way! Cheers R
@RICHARD BIRCHETT , when you say the field has been 'seeded', is that to provide grain for the voles to feed on and therefore increase their numbers OR is it a seed to encourage certain grass/plants to grow? Apologies if you explained this and I simply missed it but I'm wondering what chance I stand of trying to improve the habitat somewhere.
Hi Phil, no problem the farmer sowed a wild bird seed mix recommended by the RSPB for encouraging overwintering bird flocks to use on the 14 acres of fields. It was funded by a scheme called the Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) paid for by natural England to help the birds through the winter. I will find out the mix from the farmer if needed. Really works, thousands of linnets and other finches and species use the fields, amazing results! Helping voles and the owls and other birds of prey. R 👍
@@RichardBirchett , that's really helpful and great to know there is funding available too....makes chatting up a local farmer a bit easier if they won't be out of pocket!
There is a field exactly like this where I live that has barn owls hunting regular . Only problem is it's rented land and ocasoinaly the grass is cut really short and made into bails
