But i admit you are on a higher spiritual level than me if you can find all insects cute. My list is short : ladybug is cute, a honey bee is very cute, a butterfly is cute. But no matter, i respect every living being and i find cute even a cow or a horse and yes a pig. But there are animals we love to hate : big white sharks, salt water man eating crocs, mosquitoes. And just to make my point, there exist one tropical bug that make eggs under mammal skins then the eggs larvae move to the heart and eat it causing death. That's not cute either.

Excellent video and I loved the close-ups of the birds. It was particularly useful to know about mealy worms as I must admit to not having tried feeding them to our birds. Rats are the main problem with the bird feeders for us - we are torn between not wanting to encourage the rats while supporting the birds.

    • @rjjcms1
      @rjjcms1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

We once had a problem with rodents climbing up a wooden pergola on which the feeders were hanging off nails we banged into the upright beams, but the problem stopped when I re-sited them as hanging feeders from the beams at the top. In the mid-winter I was filling different feeders with either seed mixes, peanuts or fat balls, and once one was emptied I'd wash it out thoroughly to get it clean and pristine before refilling and rehanging it. We'd get a lot of great tits and blue tits but also a variety of other species.
More recently we've had a problem with grey squirrels reaching feeders, and there are plenty of magpies and crows or rooks which like to inhabit the taller trees. I witnessed an amusing stand-off between an intrepid young tree-climbing cat and an indignant magpie a while back; the cat backed down eventually. The most common visitors to my garden seem to be blackbirds, whose song I love, pairs of waddling collared doves or wood pigeons and in winter a robin which loves to sit nearby whenI'm doing anything out there,in the home that I'll turn up a nice juicy worm.
I've also been trying to encourage hedgehogs,of which there used to be loads but now there sadly seem to be hardly any :-( Too many cars, too many town foxes?

So far this year we've had wagtails, great tits, blue tits, common swifts and flycatchers nest in or around the house.
One bird I'm less fond of is the great spotted woodpecker since it regularly attacks other nests.

What is wrong with you? Your output of shit far outweighs the tiny bird droppings. This is manure for the soil! Birds eat all the bugs in your garden, fill your ears with symphonies of sound, fill your eyes with flashes of color and flight, fill your heart with their incredible joy at finding seed and their funny antics and little dramas, and give you affection, esp the doves. And you complain about a few droppings? I have masses of bird seed hulls to blow out and I don't mind in the least. I will feed every bird for miles around. Let them all come to me and my tranquil garden. I love them all!!! Even the squirrels, and the one brown rat who eats the seeds on the ground late at night, shyly. How much better are these friends than selfish humans?

I've been feeding birds for 2 years now. The biggest challenge here are grey squirrels. They're cute too but a nuisance when it comes to feeding birds. I developped my own design that make it nearly impossible for them to reach ny hanging bird feeder. It's basically a disc platform on top of the suspended feeder with a clever design that keeps it horizontal. When a squirrel tries to descend on it will swing sideways under the weight. it's quite an ingenious design and fun to watch. Some aggressive squirrel will still try to jump 2 meters to get to the feeder like a cliffhanger but picking an isolated tree branch has eliminated that. The truth is unless it's a caged system the only way to keep squirrels away is to feed them something separate. As soon as they run out of that food they will relentlessly try to assault the birdfeeder. They're very good learners and as is well known extremely persistent . If they succeed only one time, they will know how to forever. There was one such squirrel last year, i called him houdini, nothing could stop him. He would jump 3 meters, do impossible acrobatics. I even wrapped thorny vines around the feeder, black locust thorns 4 inch long on the feeder mounted rigidily vertically so it could not land on it. That was like nothing to the squirrel. I've seen houdini landing on these thorns unharmed. They have thick skin. Then finally i didn't see Houdini for a while. Then i saw a squirrel with wounds on the side that looked like a hawk talons and it looked infected he had lost all the fur on that side. But was still moving quick and energetically, but didn't see him more. I assume he died. The younger new generation of squirrel are much softer and tamer they are no match for the protection on the birdfeeder that only houdini could defeat, but he was really something. One day he even taunted me when i came to save the bird house that he was assaulting. These are intelligent animals and he knew well he was not wanted on the feeder . He did not run away he grunted stayed on a nearby tree only a few feet from me as if he was going to jump me and he might have if i had gotten closer. No he was not rabbid. Squrrel do not get rabbies they don't feed on dead animals and do not come in contact with any predator because they're too quick except raptors but birds do not get rabbies either. Houdini is no longer around.
Luckily for me a neighbor is feeding the new gen of squirrel so they don't bother the birds at least for now. They have a lot to learn to get anywhere close to Houdini's skills and daring.

A lot of birds gathering in one place for an extended period of time is a perfect conduit for spreading desiase.
Suets can leave mold and fungus. Old seeds can swell and develop fungus, mold and parasites. If you dont clean out the old seed and suets the bird will eat them.
In the wild birds dont eat suets, they dont have access to seed in bulk. They dont have opportunities to eat seed in bulk.

We also had a robin that flew in through the warehouse doors every morning. It would sit high on the shelving and angrily whistle until we put a few mealworms out on a tray for it, it'd come over pick them up and fly out again. Did it every morning without fail. I guess all the local birds just got used to us and all the free food 😂

I would've really liked to learn about feeding corvids in this video, shame they're referred to as "a problem". :(

    • @organickevinlondon
      @organickevinlondon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

To attract Corvids into your garden, simply put some hens eggs out for them, (available at EVERY shop, lol), as Magpies and Carrion Crows, like eating them,
this also helps to reduce "nest raiding" for eggs to eat, by the fore mentioned Magpies and Carrion Crows, (Grey Squirrels are also "nest raiders", not many people know that),
Corvids are "incredibly intelligent" so give them some EASY eggs to eat and they probably wont bother raiding HARD to find song birds nests, these same Corvids,
also like to eat, Pork Sausages too, (I just cut them up into tiny pieces, put them on a plastic tray and beat the plastic tray, "like some sort of DINNER GONG",
and I can virtually guarantee that the Magpies will turn up "in minutes" after hearing that, in their distinctive "dinner jackets?", UNLESS the Carrion Crows beat them to it),
Magpies are "really important garden birds" and are no way "a problem?", as they are usually the first garden bird, "to raise the alarm of the presence of predators",
like, cats, foxes, squirrels, Sparrowhawks AND Human Beings too and will confront such predators "with virtually no sense of fear too", so they basically "protect smaller birds",
I "truly enjoy" watching the Magpies in my London urban wildlife garden, while thinking "what are they getting up to today?", I have a 7 foot diameter wildlife pond in my garden,
that I specifically designed myself, to prevent all birds from using it as a birdbath, in order to prevent the arrival of unwanted viruses, parasites, etc, into my wildlife pond,
the only 2 species of bird that use this pond as a birdbath are Magpie and Carrion Crow, "now I KNOW how those really helpful Pond Snails arrived in my urban wildlife pond",
and if you would like to encourage Jays into your garden, simply put out some over ripe apples and/or acorns for them to eat, (Jays usual habitats are deciduous woodlands
and/or parks and gardens, its "quite ironic" that Jays burry acorns in the ground, to eat at a later date, if the winter is harsh, if its not, that acorn may well sprout,
to become an impressive Oak Tree, thus contributing to the expansion of the Jays deciduous woodland natural habitat, so THEY are incredibly intelligent too).

I started with feeling sorry for local wintering birds, so I made a feeder from a milk jug. Now with multiple feeders, suet cages, bird bath etc, I have attracted 30 species to the yard.
I see chickadees, nut hatches (red and white breasted), hairy and downey wood peckers, flickers, almost every day, certainly several times every week of the year. Spring and fall brings warblers, and finches through, as well as multiple species of sparrow. Coolest so far was a Lazuli Bunting. Such a colorful blue, manage some great photos.
Bird watching is a great hobby, and I think it is the ultimate retirement past time. Feeding, photographing, cataloging, drives in the country to observe etc etc. Together with gardening can easily be a fulltime occupation. Cheers

Has anyone else noticed a dramatic decline in wild British birds? As a child I used to see so many wild birds and my Dad would always make sure they had food especially in winter. Since the winters have become milder and London has become ever more populated I just don't see wild birds anymore. I have a feeder and so does my neighbour but it's rare birds visit. I see Gold finches, robins and a few black birds but not on the scale I used to or as often. I hope people are still helping them out by feeding them as these birds have been part of Britain for 100's of years.

An alternative to peanuts is peanut butter. I have a three inch diameter, eight inch long piece of wood that was cut from a broken branch in which I used a Forstner bit to drill four holes going down the wood in a zig-zag pattern. I fill the holes with peanut butter and some birds can't get enough - especially the woodpeckers.

So, the crows in my garden figured out how to hang from my feeder. Then, they figured out how to pull the entire feeder off the hook it was hanging on, so that it would fall to the ground and they could clean it out. Once I started using wire to secure the feeder onto the hook, they stuck to hanging off of it. ... and now, one of the pigeons has started copying them. So I get a few crows + pigeon hanging (badly!) off the bird feeder every day, keeping the smaller birds from going near it.
I also provide the crows and pigeons their own food, but they go through it really fast. Voracious eaters, they are.
But yeah. Going to invest in a mesh all around the bird feeder that will keep some of the large birds out entirely. Last resort but that's where we're at.

Here's what you will need if you intend to feed birds: (1) Unlimited budget----bird seed is expen$ive. If you plan on feeding birds for any length of time, you will spend money, money, money. (2) You will need state-of-the-art Squirrel-proof and Rat-proof feeders. (3) You don't really need any kind of flat table feeder or ground feeder. Birds feeding at your Squirrel-proof and Rat-proof feeders will scatter bird seed like crazy and ground feeding birds will gather under your bird feeders. (4) Buy 50-lb bags of Black oil sunflower seed and Proso millet at your local feed store. Mix just about 1/3 "Boss" to 2/3 millet. If you don't put in enough Boss, Scrub jays and Blue jays will scatter your millet ruthlessly to get at the Boss. (5) Buying in bulk is the way to go, so get those larger 50lb bags. Then, you will need moth-proof and Rat-proof containers in which to store your bird seed. Perfect for this purpose are those large (3-gallon size) popcorn tins you buy at Christmas or other times. (6) You will need nice-sized plastic buckets or bowls in which to mix your seed. Find a good plastic scoop. Rounded. Square ones don't seem to work as well. (7) You can buy specialized feeders such as the ones discussed in this video, but if the grids are large enough to let in small birds, you will have a problem with Rats. Rats can squeeze through a hole the diameter of a US quarter coin. (8) Make sure you put a baffle on any bird feeder poles and keep space cleared so that Rats can't jump onto your feeders. (9) If you do buy specialized peanut/suet feeders, remember you can't keep that suet in sunlight or it will melt away. (10) And if you buy a specialized Woodpecker feeder, don't buy a feeder made of wood because Squirrels will chew the crap out of the wood feeder holes and destroy your feeder. (11) You will have to purchase some large flat baffles to use as "roofs" to keep out rain, too, because rain will destroy the seed and make it all mildewy/moldy. I suggest largest metal baffles you can afford, the ones with a galvanized finish. They cost about $30 apiece on Amazon. (12) And please don't forget that this is a HOBBY. Birdfeeding is not only expen$ive, it takes time. Good luck hauling those 50 lb bags of bird seed around. I suggest you keep those popcorn tins full of seed in your pantry. Have fun. (13) Oh------and if you ever decide to feed Hummingbirds, DO NOT add any red coloring to your sugar water "nectar." Hummingbirds don't need red dyes in their systems. Be sure and hang your Hummer feeders in a shady area, otherwise the sun will "cook" the nectar and ruin it.

The Local council has given permission to builders to erect dwellings so they have destroyed the natural habitats which had been here for ages. We used to even have deer and squirrels coming to the gardens. Now they all have disappeared. I am trying to encourage at least a few species to come to the gardens.
So far, Red Kites, Starlings, Tits, Black birds,Robins, Finches, Sparrows, Collard doves, Wood Pigeons,Green and red Woodpeckers and even Malard ducks have taken an interest.
