The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight is a 1971 American Mafia comedy film directed by James Goldstone and written by Waldo Salt, based on the 1969 novel The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight by Jimmy Breslin, which in turn was based on the life of gangster Joe Gallo. The film stars Jerry Orbach, Leigh Taylor-Young, Jo Van Fleet, Lionel Stander, Robert De Niro and Irving Selbst. The film was released on December 22, 1971, by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
I grew up in Greenwood Lake, NY, where 'Sally Burns' had a lakefront estate. This is where 'the gang ' gathered. I remember they allowed us to use the basketball court when the compound was empty, but when we saw the Caddies arrive, we had to scoot over the fence and not be seen...
Jerry was with Joey at Umberto's that night with his wife Marta, they were eye witnesses to his assassination, but never cooperated with the police and took it to the grave with him....I was 14 years old when I saw this film and thought it was hilarious...
Hey I went to see it with neighbor friends on the spur of the moment and thought it was funny... true story - about 15 years ago, at St. Christopher Church in Metairie, there was an authentic "Italian Mafia" funeral....a bunch of older italians dressed in black suits and dresses ..all the guys wearing sunglasses and little old ladies with white hair, wearing black hair shawls, it made me think of this movie, as well as the Godfather :)
This is the first movie I saw with Robert DeNiro, before Taxi Driver. His comedic acting was so impressive that I remembered the name of this otherwise forgettable movie.
Joey Gallo actually did keep a lion in his basement as a way of intimidation against his rivals. This in turn earned him the nick name 'Crazy Joe' which he lived up to.
I'm watching The Offer which said the mob had a big problem with Godfather because it made Italians look stupid but how the hell did this movie get made then, come on it looks so stupid I'm not even going to watch it.
Nope, just reading a book called 'The Mad Ones' based on the Gallos. It refers to this movie a few times throughout, and how Joey and his crew hated it so much (not surprisingly) that they tried to halt productions whilst filming it in New York 1971, the same year the Godfather was getting filmed a few blocks away, so it was a major kick in the balls that no-one seemed to take him seriously. Even his sidekick 'Mondo the Midget' was heckling the actor portraying him - 'Beppo the Dwarf' 😂
@@RandomDudeOne Yes, very true. I hadn't actually got to that bit in the book at that point. Apparently Jerry Orbach was crying so much at Crazy Joe's funeral wracked with guilt, saying that he wished he hadn't played him to be so foolish in the film.
There are good films with bad trailers, and there are bad films with good trailers. This is neither. And it ain't good. Low point in Orbach's and De Niro's early career.
okay well, funny it's not. EvenTattoo from fantasy Island wasn't able to save this mess. Al Pacino was cast to play De Niro's part, he must thank god he got out of it to do The Godfather!
Orbach was one of my favorite actors. Rest in peace, Jerome.
One of my favourite comedies . .
Pacino dodged a bullet. Can you imagine not doing The Godfather for this pos?

Never heard of this until today…
It’s mention in S2 of The Sopranos. Amazing to see a young De Nero.

Sir robert de niro . . The way he embodies the part . . Man , he is a revelation !! Love you sir !! Much love from mumbai !!
Pacino was lucky he got out of this piece of...
De Niro wasn't as wise.
@@moncorp1 De Niro was never too picky about his roles. He played in a lot of duds but it did not hurt his career.

@@richardrau5752 Do you mean Metairie in Louisiana, right outside New Orleans?

I just learned that Jerry Orbach hung out with Joe Gallo the night he was whacked. Small world.
Now we know how Herve' got on the 1975 James Bond movie (Golden Gun), which got him on 1978 Fantasy Island..
Went on to win seven oscars
...so they really had a lion chained in their basement?? :D

That hair style has to be nightmare fuel for Deniro. Yikes!
this is why crazy Joe beat the guy who made fun of mobs
That was then before Lenny Briscoe on the much common sense version of Law and Order television show series ☕📺🇺🇸
I'll take this over Godfather 3
The sequel is in Chicago present day...they been filming for a few years...
Mafia boss,s...how do we now that?Go start the car...hahahahahah

Why to bring politics into it typical liberals politicizing everything.
Loosely based on monster Joe Gallo who was gunned down at Umbertos in NYC

@@niggazaintkillaz Funny thing is Joey and Jerry Orbach became good friends after the movie came out.
