    Hi, thanks for the video, what is the reference of rotary encoders?

    Hy! What is the type, manufacturer or type number for the new and better quality encoders what you are used for replace?

      Hello, I don't think my replacement encoders are much better quality, it was just a bag of encoders I had in my inventory, origin China eBay, but they work fine and will probably keep working for a few years.
      They are just standard cheap rotary encoders with push button action. You can easily find better (and more expensive) ones, but it's a cheap scope so the cheap ones will do.
      Cheers

    Repair of my Owon Scope, replacing 3 front panel rotary encoders. Requires complete teardown of the scope plus a bit of tricky soldering.

    Thank you, I'll be trying this on my own owon scope soon.

    Thanks - I needed the first part,opening the case, so I could replace a broken on/off switch.

    I have a similar owon scope, as others have asked, what is the part number for the rotary encoders you used?

    • @TheStuffMade
      @TheStuffMade  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Thomas, I can't give you a part number, the encoders I used in the video were some I already had and got from ebay or somewhere similar. However I recently replaced the last 3 encoders as well and I found some low profile ones on aliexpress that fit better and didn't need additional cutouts in the button rubber, so I recommend you look for those. They are very cheap, just a few $ for a bag of 10. When you replace them, make sure to cut the pins after soldering very close the to board to make sure they don't short out against the shielding.

    Hola, muchas gracias por este video, pude cambiar los 8 Rotary encoder el único detalle es que quedo el sentido de giro al revés del original pero eso es lo de menos, ahora se puede trabajar sin problemas. Saludos.

    I made a solder sucker with the cheap iron and a vacuum pump from aliexpress along with a vacuum switch from eBay. It works great other than the cleaning and slow heating but is way better than the wick.

      I was going to try to add the capacitors, but to my surprise, when I opened the case, I discovered that several of the solder pads did not have any solder on them. Once I soldered them in properly, they were functioning perfectly. Looks like a quality control issue for my scope. Fairly easy fix.

      @@jamesstelly995 could be, but those encoders tend to start glitching after some time. So if you had case open, I would add those caps anyway.

      yup , 100nf-220nf caps on those encoders and she's good to go :)

      @@SirLag4lot I did this fix 3 years ago and already forget about it, but now I saw your comment and can confirm it works till today without any issues. I mean, adding only caps without replacing encoders. Can only recommend :)

    Had my scope over three years with very little use and it developed this problem. I contacted Owen Taiwan who advised me they had upgraded the encoder board in the scope and advised they would give me one free of charge if I just paid postage. They advised there UK agent to send me a board which I paid £7 postage. I have had no problems since.

      Same here, got a free replacement board from my local agent and the problem was gone. Good service, though I would have preferred better quality right from the start.

    About the Encoders.
    forum.allaboutcircuits.com/xfa-blogs/lindembruck.325121/
    I changed the encoders but the new one turn inverse.
    Need to make a jump to connect right side to left and left to right.
    The problem about the encoders get fail is because they have grease inside to make they heavy to turn to do not turn easy.
    The grease is made of something meltable.
    It melt and flow to the encoder contacts and there do a film of insulation.
    If you can open the encoder and clean it with solvent, you will have it back in order to work for some time but you can apply some soft grease to do a long life to the contacts.
    Thank you

    AVOID! Mine lasted just over a year then CH2 died. Great repair video by the way.

      Thanks, yeah I wouldn't recommend anyone buy this scope new today, but back then it was a decent alternative to the Rigol with the Owon being cheaper, having a much bigger/higher res screen and both larger memory and higher bandwidth.

    Potentially excellent video but spoilt by so much detail out of focus. Just do not hold anything too close to the camera lens; and then check range before videoing end production.

    Thanks I have one of these scopes and kind of regret buying it. Encoders are junk and had to replace some of mine. Would have ended up a box of parts without your video.
    I updated the firmware at some point hoping to fix it but all it did was make most of the text displayed on the screen totally unreadable gibberish. Has anyone else encountered that? No help from Owon

    • @TheStuffMade
      @TheStuffMade  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, yeah it's a low cost and somewhat low quality scope, I don't think any of the other equal priced scopes turned out any better, including the rigol with the tiny screen.
      I did do a firmware update on mine at some point and I remember it improved the screen update rate plus fixes a few minor bugs. Did you try update the firmware again after you got gibberish on the screen?
