    I have a stereo in my bus at work. I think it's made by REA?
    The volume knob is an encoder. It started doing the same thing after about a year.
    It's insane trying to adjust the volume now!
    Try to turn it up & it goes down or blast the volume.

      That is how this behaves, brand new out of the box. Really a bad design. Doesn't give me any confidence in their products.

      My marantz SR6012 does this too. Thrilling with almost a KW behind it 😱 Ironic: I was happy to upgrade to an amp with an encoder because the potentiometer in the old one crackled like so many.

    The failure to read a drive is usually due to the file system and/or partition format on the USB keys. Windows will generally be either FAT or NTFS file systems on either an MBR or GPT partition scheme. The most basic and compatible (aka-old) of these options would be FAT formatted on an MBR partition scheme. Right-click on the drive and go to Properties to see what a given drive is. Just use caution when changing these settings, they will always result in the drive being wiped.

    • @R50_J0
      @R50_J0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. When the commenter writes “FAT” he means FAT32 on an MBR partition table. But some newer embedded systems prefer exFAT because there are open libraries for it and it’s both convenient and free for the firmware dude to use.

    I have the same unit, bought in the UK about 1 year ago. It also has the latest firmware in it, but has been "upgraded" so it now reports itself as a '1062' and goes up to 60Mhz. I cannot make the encoder skip no matter how fast I turn it. Works flawlessly for me.

      @aerofart ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s good to know. I have the 2042X purchased mid 2023, upgraded, encoder performance is crappy, just like in the video.

    If you want quality hardware, buy a Keysight. Looks usable to me. Quit spinning the knob so fast. The encoder is very likely consumer audio-grade junk that typically lasts only about a year or two under heavy use. You think they’re going to put instrument or medical-grade optical encoders in the thing? Remove the encoder and show us what it looks like under magnification. The typical failure mode of those cheap encoders is damping lubricant from the shaft migrating down to the brushes running on the encoder wheel (It’s probably a mechanical encoder.) With a surplus amount of viscous shaft lube on the encoder wheel plus rapid rotation of the brushes, the brushes tend to hydroplane over the metal encoder segments, thereby causing the quadrature decoder in the FPGA or microcontroller to miscount steps and direction. Take it apart and clean it and it will work again for a while. The consumer audio repair folks deal with erratic mechanical rotary encoders all the time. I just diagnosed and replaced a mechanical encoder on an Elecraft KX3 a couple of months ago.

    • @jaro6985
      @jaro6985 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most test equipment uses mechanical encoders, even high end. Look at Keysight 0960-0912, just a standard cheap plastic 24 pulse mechanical rotary encoder. Nothing special at all.
      Granted they probably did proper QA on the software and on the parts they receive for production.

      It’s the number of spins the encoder receives, not time since manufacture. Different operators will spin certain controls more or less. The content creator apparently *really* likes to spin it fast and long.

    • @oschonrock
      @oschonrock 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@R50_J0 Thanks smarty pants, I could never have worked that out myself. The "content creator" has had his for 5 minutes. He's spun it less than I have. You do the maths? He has a bad apple as far as I can see. There are plenty of people saying "not mine" and no one saying "yes mine does it too"?

  • @OneBiOzZ
    @OneBiOzZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    i have had this issue before due to overly aggressive debouncing
    but it could also be a polled encoder instead of an interrupt driven one
    either way there is no excuse for the primary input device of the instrument to have problems as a result of totally normal usage

    So if it's not a firmware issue, I'd just say your particular model is faulty. It is obvious that it should not function like this. It is also very likely that there are various hardware revisions and you have one of the newer ones, because my model, for example, had very old firmware when it came from the store just a few days ago. If I were you, I would simply return it and replace it with a properly working one, it is a good awg in this price range, as many people wrote here. It also doesn't make much sense to complain about the entire company because of one malfunctioning model. However, I understand your bitterness, you have paid for a device that is not working properly.

    • @joesmith-je3tq
      @joesmith-je3tq  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not my unit and I am not bitter because I paid for a low quality device. Again, we were just curious how some of these low end brands compare. I am surprised of how many people reported the same problem over the years and they have not corrected it. Nothing I have read tells me that they are a brand I would trust.

    Is it realistic to expect the highest quality encoder in one of the cheapest AWG's on the market?
    Clearly there's some kind of maximum speed that the encoder or software can handle....
    1st world problems I think.

    • @jaro6985
      @jaro6985 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No one sane is saying they have to use the highest quality encoders, they just expect them to work under normal conditions. Which some commenters said they did. So there is an obvious QA issue somewhere in the chain.
      The Rigol that costs the same as this siglent does not have the problem.

    • @thomasbaumgart9209
      @thomasbaumgart9209 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaro6985 That's not exactly correct: My (and many others's) DG4000 (and also some of their other AWGs) have problematic encoders with the "parameter change" programmed on the wrong signal line change of the quadrature encoder. One of the lines changes close to the detents, the other approximately half-way in between. Rigol just got it wrong and programmed the parameter change on the line that changes at the detents, thus resulting in an unpredictable/uneven change pattern from detent to detent, i.e. mostly one parameter change between two detents but sometimes none and sometimes two. The quadrature decoder is implemented in a CPLD on the front panel PCB that won't be updated by system firmware. So no chance to address this issue "the easy way"... Rigol's entry level AWGs (DG800/900/2000) have also very poor encoder performance with very limited adjustment speed and no acceleration, but at least the "performance" is deterministic and there's no direction reversal if turning the knob at a high rate.

      Sometimes you just want to sweep the frequencies to see attenuation or similar behavior. In 2022, or even 2012, it is unacceptable to have such a lame encoder implementation. I would say implementation, since even the firmware takes a really long time to boot up. I don't want to say too many bad things about the firmware developers, they are probably the same guys who built the hardware, but sometimes you have to step over pride and money and hire a professional. The same goes for testing.
      Even in low volumes, how much would have it cost to have a proper developer, a proper tester and a proper encoder? 10-20$ per unit?

    With all due respect as I really enjoy your videos, you seem to have become fixated on an encoder wheel to the exclusion of even exploring the capabilities of the unit. That's sad because it really is a nice unit. As I've said before I use the keypad. Simple.

    • @tautech8196
      @tautech8196 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This ^ yet Joe does have a quite reasonable expectation for the encoder to perform better than it does however one doesn't normally use the encoder for large adjustments when keypad use is faster and more precise. Despite this, the issue of encoder performance is in front of high ranking personnel at Siglent for them to review and review they should as their products are making headway onto the benches of experienced engineers many of which have only previously used A brand equipment. Poor performance will only have them resist obtaining further Siglent products. Nevertheless here in NZ SDG1032X remains our most popular AWG.
